Two professors from San Diego State University claim in a new book that farmers' markets in urban areas are weed-like "white spaces" responsible for oppression.
Pascale Joassart-Marcelli and Fernando J Bosco are part of an anthology released this month titled "Just Green Enough." The work, published by Routledge, claims there is a correlation between the "whiteness of farmers' markets" and gentrification.
"Farmers' markets are often white spaces where the food consumption habits of white people are normalized," the SDSU professors write, the education watchdog Campus Reform reported Wednesday.
The geology professors claim that 44 percent of San Diego's farmers' markets cater to "households from higher socio-economic backgrounds," which raises property values and "[displaces] low-income residents and people of color."
"The most insidious part of this gentrification process is that alternative food initiatives work against the community activists and residents who first mobilized to fight environmental injustices and provide these amenities but have significantly less political and economic clout than developers and real estate professionals," the academics write.
The authors claim that negative externalities of "white habitus" formed at farmers' markets can be managed through "inclusive steps that balance new initiatives and neighborhood stability to make cities 'just green enough.'"
Wow, and I thought they were just places where you could buy stuff like fruits and vegetables. I had no idea they were evil waycism all along. :swoon:

^Yes, it would. :laugh3:
That article was made up by a pea-brained person. Only the little people get offended by farmer's market stuff. If it's good nutrition, it appeals to those who understand how good nutrition is good for you. If you drink a Slushy on a daily basis, I would assume you're not one of those enlightened folks. Off with you, you nincompoop!

The farmer's market I go to has a disproportionately large number of East Asians as vendors and buyers.
Most things in a Farmer's Market are priced more than the items I buy in my grocery store. So, why would I want to pay more?

Best to go at the end for heavy discounts.
They are mostly out of my way anyway unless they come to my workplace. Then I go and browse.

They are expensive, but the quality is usually better than a grocery store.
I have to drive quite a distance into the city for the best market so it only happens once every few months. We bring loads of coolers and a portable freezer. They discount the meats and seafoods by more than half towards the end of the day cause it's more work for them to pack up and offload elsewhere.

A golf buddy of mine is from BC. He was saying that some of the farmer's markets in the Okanagan are mostly East Indian/South Asian vendors and customers.

I go with what's convenient and my grocery store is and they sell the organic items. Each week, there is a farmer's market in my office building. If I like the produce, I do buy it like succulent-looking strawberries and other fruits and vegetables.

Every working person does.
Bulk buying every once in awhile solves the time dilemma.
