They're worried, and rightly so.  The internet has been a complete disaster for them and they would love nothing more than total censorship and having complete control over what news they feed the masses,  just like before.

Exactly.  Only with control of media, can propaganda be inserted into everyone's lives.  The free nature of the net makes this hard for them to do, and it frustrates them.

Europe is certainly hostile to free speech and the UK is a big part of that.  But I'd like to see a reputable news source confirm this story.  Where did they get the figure 3,400 from? they seem to say the London Times, but you need to a subscriptioon to search it.

You two are exactly right.  And on the interent people don't feel like they have to be as politically correct.  if a group annoys them (like Muslims) they can state it and usually have no fear of repercussions.  The left would like nothing more than to take that away and have everyone live in fear and dare not say anything that dissents from what they are told they must believe.

It's all about control, something I have a hard time accepting.

I failed in school, not because I was dumb, but simply because I failed to follow their "control."  I didn't do and think as they said, which infuriated them.

Nothing has changed, except this method of 'control' has become even more pronounced today...

Whereas I used to see very little, now it's almost everywhere I look.  Many soak this up, without question.  I do not.

We could have a discussion about European and British contempt for free speech, we could have a discussion about the 2,300 people allegedly depirved of free speech.  But no, its been transformed into another Jewish conspiracy thread.

I don't want to silence any of your views scouse. I think if you believe that jews are behind it all you should be able to say so,   But I would like to humbly suggest (with fash's permission of course) that you keep it to a few threads at a time and not turn every thread into a Jewish conspiracy  thread.

As of this year, Britain has now banned any advertising that portrays any gender in any stereotypical role.

So, no more women in front of ovens, and no more men welding, I guess?

Not sure exactly the reason this even had to be implemented, but now you'll see only the 'Utopia' that they want you to see in British Ads...

I was in doubt about the 3,400 figure but this corroborates it

http://dailycaller.com/2018/01/13/british-cops-hunt-facebook-users-who-posted-offensive-comments-about-grooming-gangs/

Last paragraph

QuoteAs reported by The Times in October 2017, British police arrested at least 3,395 people for making offensive comments on the Internet in 2016, across 29 police forces. The exact figures are likely to be significantly higher, as 13 police forces refused to provide the requested information.

3,400  or more people arrested for speech violations.  this is like something from the former Soviet Union or Cuba not a western democracy.

Here is the original article from the sunday Times--as part of registering I got two free articles so here is the sntire article posted

Nine people a day are being arrested for posting allegedly offensive messages online as police step up their campaign to combat social media hate speech.

More than 3,300 people were detained and questioned last year over so-called trolling on social media and other online forums, a rise of nearly 50 per cent in two years, according to figures obtained by The Times.

About half of the investigations were dropped before prosecutions were brought, however, leading to criticism from civil liberties campaigners that the authorities are over-policing the internet and threatening free speech.

Arrests are expected to rise after Amber Rudd, the home secretary, last week announced a national police hub to crack down on hateful material online. Freedom of information requests have revealed that 3,395 people across 29 forces were arrested last year under section 127 of the Communications Act 2003, which makes it illegal to intentionally "cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety to another" with online posts.

It is a rise of nearly 50 per cent since 2014, when there were 2,315 arrests, and an increase of 23 per cent since 2015 when there were 2,755 arrests.

The total number of arrests under the act, which also criminalises public online messages that are "grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character", is likely to be much higher because the request for data was rejected by 13 forces and two did not provide adequate information.

Data from two of the UK's largest police forces show big increases. The Met detained 867 people last year, up by 53 per cent from 2014. West Midlands police arrested 635 people, an increase of 877 per cent since 2014 when there were 65 arrests. The number of cases reaching the courts has remained stable. Last year 1,696 people were charged and 1,399 convicted.

The Police Federation said officers lacked the training to take investigations beyond an "online reading exercise". Simon Kempton, the federation's spokesman for cybercrime, said more needed to be done to improve online policing and blamed stretched resources for officers' limited knowledge.

The National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) defended the rising arrest figures, saying officers had improved their ability to combat crime online as it continues to grow. Stephen Kavanagh, of the NPCC's digital intelligence unit, said forces had adapted well to the "changing nature of harm in our society".

Jodie Ginsberg, chief executive of Index on Censorship, a free speech campaign group, accused police of unnecessarily hunting internet trolls. She said: "These figures bear out what we've been saying: that police are wasting more and more time investigating people for comments online that are offensive but not criminal."

Jim Killock, executive director of the Open Rights Group, said the Crown Prosecution Service emphasised section 127 was to be used only in "extreme circumstances". "But the problem is 'grossly offensive' is not something you should normally be prosecuted for. It's not showing harm to other people. It's not showing that somebody is being harassed . . . attacked or threatened."
Again this is something right out of An Orwellain nightmare about thought crimes.  Or a third world shi....er hellhole  where people have no rights.

And its a dual cancer--not only is it affront to western values of free speech, it also takes police manpower away from apprehending real criminals.   Good going UK, you are well on your way to becoming a totalitarian leftist state.

Well of course, they are too busy going after thought crimes (internet "hate speech") to go after real crimes.

759 honor violence crimes and 265 forced marriages in the capital between 2015 and 2017. However, just 138 people were charged with offences.

I expect police to enforce the law, especially violent crime.

That's how most people feel.  Just not those who run England, Apparently. Especially the mayor of Londonistan

Sadiq Khan is blaming the surge in recorded crime on falling police numbers — but figures show the annual decline could be plugged by redeploying 'hate crime' officers from London alone.

Figures reported elsewhere in the newspaper do show a fall of some 930 officers over the last 12 months, to 121,929 overall — but this represents a reduction in total manpower of less than 1 per cent.

Meanwhile, recorded crime rose by 14 per cent overall across 44 police force areas in England and Wales — including a 32 per cent rise in domestic burglary, a 29 per cent rise in robbery, a 23 per cent rise in sex offences, a 21 per cent rise in knife crime, and a 20 per cent rise in gun crime.

In fact, with the London alone boasting over 900 police officers "dedicated to investigating hate crime" — one of Khan's top priorities as mayor — it seems likely that the annual fall could be more than adequately compensated by redeploying existing resources.
What do those officers do if there is no hate crimes to investigate?

I could be wrong, but I'm betting they look around the internet trying to find these thought crimes.   When they find one, they try and track the poster and then if they can do that they go arrest him.  When that's done they repeat the cycle again.

In order to achieve a successful prosecution, the prosecutor needs to prove that the person alleged is the same person that posted.

In my wealth of experience, most people panic when questioned and quickly either fess up, or make some claim that is utterly unbelievable. Either way, they are toast.

If you are in such a position, SAY NOTHING.

Give them your name and address as required by law, and then decline to answer any questions. You are under no compulsion to say anything.

You will not be prosecuted.

As long as you deny posting anything, you are safe from prosecution or should I say persecution?

Do not deny, nor admit.

Simply say, ad nauseum..."I decline to answer the question".

Once you start a dialogue, you're toast.

Trust me.

"Did you post those words?"

"I did not"

"Can you say who did?"

"No."

"Who else uses the computer?"

"Er...my wife."

"So if you did not post those words, it must have been your wife. What time does she get home?"

Nope...say NOTHING. "I decline to answer the question".
