That's right, the democrat party wants more voters, so they are demanding people brought here illegally by their parents be made citizens.  And they are going to inconvenience all law abiding citizens with a (partial) government shutdown to do it.   Because whatever helps their party gain power is way more important  than what is good for the country.
Even the New York Times knows who is at fault for this

Voters "will see which Senators vote to shove aside veterans, military families, and vulnerable children to hold the entire country hostage until we pass an immigration bill they have not even written yet,' McConnel continued. "This is completely unfair and uncompassionate."

Right to the last minute I was hoping the Democrats would put the nation's immediate ahead of the long term  interests of their party. I must be a dreamer. :laugh3:

				Hopefully this  won't last long.

This is a watershed moment in American politics.
If Trump plays it right, the opposition will be out for decades.
If he fluffs it, he won't see 8 years.

My husband thinks the Democrats did this to rain on Trump's upcoming state of the union address.

It has always been a partisan issue. Not bi-partisan, can't do that anymore...
Not the first time and will not be the last. There have been 18 government shut downs since 1976 when it started. It is always because they cannot work together to get things done. They all need to be put in stocks and publicly flogged for all their bullshit.

I've seen shut downs before too..
It's unique to American politics.

It may be unique to American politics (actually, its not...it happened in Australia in 1976), but its a damning indictment on ALL adversarial democracies. By definition, modern democracy pits one side of society against another.
How on earth can countries prosper, grow and develop whilst fighting amongst themselves?
Democracy has been usurped by partisan interests and power seekers. Its dead, and needs to be overhauled poste haste.

It's funny that in China, the government actually cares about public opinion. In our screwed up "democracy", the party in power thinks they have a blank cheque to do whatever the fuck they want.

Its happened before, and its not a complete shutdown, but some people here and there may be inconvenienced.
The media will spin it that its trumps and the repubs fault, some people will just blame both sides in disgust,
But remember what this is about,--the republicans put together a budget to fund the government, the democrats, who were not elected a majority, are insisting that the republicans give amnesty to nearly a million illegal aliens so the democrats can get them as voters.
I don't think it could possibly be clearer who is on the wrong side of this.

Exactly right buddy.

Here is what Shuck Schumer, leader of the democrat minority said in 2013, about a government shutdown over immigration.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ii6j_rofWk
So bascially he Condemns something, then turns around and not only does the thing he just condemned, but did it in the exact manner as described in his hypothetical illustration of just how horrid such an action would be.

Hence the (now) fatal flaw of "democracy". Abuse of power is the beginning of the end.

Chuck Schumer is a piece of shit.

I read the senate may reach a deal to end the shutdown.

yes.  there was also once a time where both poilitical parties wanted border security.  Even in 2008 democrats called for border security.  Now they have gone all in on illegal aliens.

All it does is postpone the fight.  Just yesterday Schumer said that he will not give any money for the wall in exchange for DACA.  Today trump said there won;t be any DACA then.
The only way Trump should ever give them DACA is in exchange for full wall funding, border security funds, no more lottery immigration and no more chain family migration. Even then I think its doubtful.  DACA gives the dems nearly a million voters.
Better to end the filibuster on budgets and just have the repubs vote to fund what Trump wants and to hell with the democrats.  The repubs are the majority party, they should start acting like it.

Who is actually running the country, the President or the Congress?
Why have one, if the other makes the decisions?

I truly believe that any 'elected' official doesn't have quite as much 'power' as we think, and is instead being 'guided' by 'behind the scenes' forces, whoever they may be...

the Repubs are cowards, Trump is trying to help them become real men, but its a difficult task.
More specifically Trump has asked McConnell to get rid of the filibuster on spending, this would make it way harder to shut the government down.  But Mcconnell won't do it.  Even though he got rid of the filibuster for judges.  Either McConnell is afraid it will look bad and he'll get negative press and/or he is worried the dems will come to power and the repubs will have no filibuster to stop them.

Okay, so McConnell thinks the Dems will take the senate back. The minority party does not want to surrender the filibuster tool.
