Yes, it halved itself in 24 hours...that is what I find unpleasant about southern Australian weather. It fluctuates too much in summer, so just as you get acclimatised to heat, it reverses direction...then heats up again. I find it very uncomfortable.

I thought it was predictably warm in the summer in most places in Australia. Any wild variation happened in winter months.

Our summers have become a roller coaster of temperatures. Inconsistent, ranging from mild to searing. Before the planet's warming phase (no that's not a nod to the "man is heating the planet" nonsense, but the weather has warmed in the past 30 odd years) our summers would range from 25 to 35 with 40 being an exception...now 40 and up is common.

I was up in Yarrawonga/Mulwala last week and it was near constantly 40 plus. Thank goodness for chilled cider and air con.

Definitely warmer in Oz. We used to have frosts, but there has not been one for many years now. Winter days could get down to 10 or 11C. Now the coldest in Adelaide is 16C (much colder in the east).

				About Belize,
Gang violence is a big part of the problem, and is largely centered on Belize City. The south side of Belize City, in particular, should be avoided at all times.
Some violent crime has spread to the northern and western parts of the country, however, where murder and incidents like home invasions were previously rare. This includes some areas frequented by tourists. Criminals typically carry guns and do not walk in fear of confrontation; travelers are advised to comply with a robber's instructions rather than resisting. Nonetheless, a number of robberies in recent years have resulted in severe injuries or death.

Aside from knowing that south of the U.S. border the way of life is very different and that tourists are generally looked upon in a negative light... I did assume the cartels are just the tip of the iceberg.

We lived in the Filippines for 4 years and were well instructed by Ex Pats and many locals that we were natural targets for criminals
I don't think it's necessarily " looked upon in a negative light" ... our treatment by honest locals was always excellent.
It's "whitey IS / Must Be  rich as well as naive of the local ways"  ... an easy and lucrative target in robber's eyes
As our work took us into or through some dangerous-for-whitey areas, we always had a driver / bodyguard to keep us on the best routes ... and it is far less likely to have problems when a local is with you
We knew some stubborn Ex Pats who insisted in driving themselves around who ran into great difficulties ... even being robbed while stuck in traffic right downtown big city.

Some Singaporean friends took us across the border into Malaysia on one occasion, and we went for a meal in a restaurant in the city we were visiting. After the meal, we came out of the restaurant and I stood on the footpath, just looking around at the local life...our host rushed me into the car and said it was dangerous for me to expose my presence so blatantly. The local hoodlums don't see a white guy...they see a target.
Admittedly it was an industrial city hub, and had a reputation for high crime and corrupt police...not all of Malaysia is as hazardous.

I never considered the animosity that people with fair skin must have when they're in an area where the majority group is different. Deep down I think because of the media I'd like to think everyone likes American movies and that it would have a trickle down effect on how you're ultimately treated.
Sure, they want your money more than anything else but hatred for someone who we don't know seems hollow at best.

I've some number of years abroad in areas which didn't have the reputation one prefers. I found getting to know the locals first, spreading the rumour that you're working poor, and walking in plain daylight or moonlight worked the best. Not behaving like the locals do is a sure way to get done. It's also very important to recognize where a local isn't behaving properly towards you and to call them out on the spot as locals do because the rest see it, empathize, and quietly build you stronger.
Getting driven around is nice. Getting to know your neighbours is much better.

That's the common theme, so exercise common sense.
Put into that perspective... Chicago doesn't seem so bad after all.
Chicago is a walk in child friendly park compared to some of the places my husband has worked..
Get Herman talking about this and he'll probably share some stories from the countries he's worked in.

I might have read through it too quickly, but I was making a generalization based on more than just cc's post.
My husband who is fair skinned has been all over the world for work..
Most of the areas he has been to were not affluent and many presented dangers to non locals who were alone..
That's the common theme, so exercise common sense.

I think Chicago doesn't compare to most of the eastern world.
Sure, we have lots of murders and robberies, but we also have a deeper sense of security, protection through fear of prosecution, stone walls and steel doors, and many resources most of us take for granted.
I complain a lot, but I do realize it could be ten times worse.

It can be nice at times. I haven't lived anywhere else, so I couldn't compare it to another large city.
There's certainly a lot to do here, and there's wall to wall shopping.

I've heard that those with cash in Chicago have cabins or retreats in Wisconsin or Michigan to go to in the summer months and the rest just try to get by day to day.

They're also popular retreat spots for camping. I think they do something similar in the surrounding areas of NYC.
