Of course, games played in ice and snow aren't big in Australia for some strange reason...but for the most part you'd hardly know an Olympic games is in progress here.

Likewise, the last summer Olympic games had very low interest levels.
Are the Olympics declining in status?
Even The Guardian thinks the Olympics is a dead concept.

I totally agree.
I'm not planning on watching any events.
Like many institutions of the old world, the Olympics is losing relevance and importance to the average man.
Not before time, in my view. It isn't even about sport... it's about politics and individualism.

I might watch a hockey game or two.
I like the ski jumping where they do backflips and stuff, also the snowboarding, maybe downhill racing , I might DVR some of that. The rest I don't care much about.
I don't derive much enjoyment from watching most sports.
I just watched about 5 minutes of some girls and women riding down a snow-covered slop on a skateboard with no wheels.
That was all I could stand... ac_boring

We have a legendary gold medallist. Olympic speed skater Steve Bradbury.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAADWfJO2qM
Qualified slowest. With half a lap to go he was so far behind he could barely see the other skaters.
But then the miracle on ice...and even now, Australians that overcome the odds and triumph when all hope is gone call it "Doing a Bradbury".
Its losing its popularity due to old goats in the olympic board and politics..
We should all care. IT is nice to see that Russia is getting the humiliation of not being able to use their flag for the opening cerimonies. hey have to endure the humiliation of this reminder of how they use drugs to enhance their performance. IT also is wonderful that China isn't using any drugs now to enhance their performance.

I watched about 5 minutes of something called "women's half pipe" snowboarding.
The contestants snowboard down a semi circular track, whilst moving up each side to do flips and mid air turns. They get a score.
I've never seen a more absurd "sport". No-one outside the sport would have a clue how the score is applied. If you watch a race, the winner is the first past the finish line. But these "sports" that are judged are a load of bollocks, and not worth watching.

The winter Olympics are expected to cost South Korea $12.9 billion..
That amount is more than the $7 to 8 billion that was estimated when Pyeongchang was announced as host in 2011.
And all for rich kids to play silly games in the snow and ice.

Most regular people can't afford such sports. It's just rich people. I haven't heard any talk or excitement from anyone about the Olympics...if I didn't see the news, I wouldn't even know it was going on.
There's the use of drugs every year and cheating....rich people competitiveness...isnt it great the death threats the Canadian speed skater got?? Yeah the Olympics are great.
Of course the cost will double to build and promote...putting the country in debt for years on end...the cost of a ticket to get I to a venue is ducking retarded...seriously...$500-$1000?? Of course. It's too bad about the negative attitude towards it but that's how it goes. These athletes are trained in many ways including ignoring their critics. They can't care less if you are not a fan. You cannot make everyone happy. "The lion does not concern itself with the opinions of the sheep." I always say that.
I refuse to live in a world where even the regular folks cannot dream big. It starts with a dream. It isn't true that all Olympic athletes are rich. They first have to show a skill, then they get endorsements, sponsorships, and even grants. They strike up deals. They train hard and compete and the sponsorship continues. If they happen to be creative and entrepreneurial, then they are going to go far even if they never win a medal in the Olympics.

Every sport carry costs. It is not free or cheap. None of it is.
What's with the hockey hate? When it's time for Canada to compete with their rivals and they win the hockey championship, all of a sudden the Canadian hockey haters turn into hockey fans. Stop the hypocrisy, will you? It's pathetic.
By the way, while some of us enjoy the thrill of the Olympics and enjoy the inspiring stories of hard work, endurance, perseverance, overcoming obstacles yet ending up on top, sharing the agony of defeat too, the rest of you have fun staying morose and crotchety.
Sorry, Canada. We were just better this time.

My point is that it's getting harder and harder for regular people to put their children in expensive sports like hockey.
I stand by that, Fash. I do not believe that all those athletes are all rich. No. If the will is great and the skill is impressive, they will find a way to play. I find this close-mindedness about playing hockey rather puzzling. So many Canadians play it. Don't tell me they are all rich. Those folks in the boonies who play hockey but can't afford dental care when they lose their teeth, they are rich? Come on. Tonya Harding was rich? No. But she was an Olympian. See. Just get over this mindset already.

I"m sure they are not either, but it's a lot easier to play certain sports if children come from a family of means.
