I remember when a night in Istanbul meant cheap booze and an easy lay. Thanks Islam for wrecking a party place.

Steep alcohol taxes drive Turkey's drinkers to home-brew
Under President Tayyip Erdogan, a pious Muslim known for his dislike of alcohol, taxes on booze have increased steadily and now account for two thirds of the cost of some alcoholic drinks.
From early 2003, when Erdogan came to power, to October 2017, prices of raki - a traditional aniseed-flavored spirit - have jumped by 665 percent and beer prices by 580 percent, according to data from the Turkish Statistics Institute (TUIK).
We're heavily taxed here too. Lots of people have gotten into beer, wine, and spirits making through local brewing supply hobby shops.
A bottle of spirits here runs 40-50 bucks and 24 beers is about the same. People have had enough of government opportunism and gouging.

Pretty close to the prices in Saskatchewan. I don't remember much home made booze when I lived in Queensland. Booze was cheaper then though.

It's all the rage here now. Brew your own microbrewery's are popping up everywhere. You make an appointment, usually as a group of friends, and use the establishment's equipment and knowledge if required to make half a dozen gourmet slabs for less than 25 bucks per slab.
Some of the microbrewery's also do liquor distilling for gins and such, or people buy highly automated 'essential oil' distillers from the brew shops and do it on their kitchen counters, then add essences or barrel and age if they want authentic whiskeys.

Sure, as long as individuals decide to do so for themselves.
