Title: The madness goes on...give teachers guns.

The US just doesn't get it.

The remedy for too MANY guns is not to add MORE guns. And especially not to TEACHERS.

What idiocy comes up with this concept?

Schools in my province are required to hold lock down drills twice a year.

How many separate gun threads do you  need on the main board to express YOUR single view?

I've heard of this before. I dont know how I feel about it. Giving a teacher a gun, nah. If a teacher had taken a gun safety course, taken a concealed weapons course and gotten their permit, AND if they went through a more special rigorous course considering the profession, only then would I maybe considerate it.

Don't laugh folks, it's a vaild point. Rather than beat everyone for over the head with my fiscal conservatism and free market enthusiasm, Fash gave me my own thread.

Different issues.

One is about gun control.

One is about providing guns in schools.

A large school will have 50 teachers. At least HALF female. That's 50 guns in the hands of inexperienced users...and who have ZERO experience in a potentially death threatening crisis.

Its one thing to have a gun, kiddies. Its another world when you have to pull it out, aim and fire.

A LUDICROUS concept.

Oh, and I'm still waiting for a rational and sensible reason for gun ownership.

That's a "different" issue and demands a separate thread

Agreed they should have training first, not just a gun in drawer they never shot before.

But no need anyway.  Like i said want to get rid of mass school shootings--One entrance, metal detectors and an armed security guard that's all it takes.  No need to arm teachers, no need to take away constitutional rights.

It is a solution we poked some fun at.  Because their poor immigration polices led to having to implement these measures.  But yes, sometimes you have to resort to such methods.

I don't like the idea of metal detectors and armed security in schools.  But if you want to stop school shootings that's what it will take.  Gun bans will have little to no effect.

No metal detector, but yes only one entrance, all others were locked. The entrance had a buzzer, and a camera, and only once the front desk buzzed you in could you get in. Once in you had to report to the office upon entry, which was right there. No security guard, even better it had a local police officer.

So why did it in Australia?

Since 1996...NO mass shootings.

Like I said before, Australia is 1/13th the size of the US.  It had 1 shooting in 1996 that killed more than 10 people.  Whereas since 1996 the US has had 13 shootings that killed more than 10 people.  So that is proportional.

The UK has very similar gun laws to Australia--they've had 2 mass shootings and 2 mass bombing murders since 1996 that killed more than 10 people.   They are 1/5th of Americas population so actually in the UK you are MORE likely per capita to die in a mass murder attack than in the US.

the French also have tough gun laws--since 1995 they have had four shootings in which 9 or more were killed and a truck attack.  france is 1/5th the size of the US.  Despite french gun laws you are more likely percapita to die in france in a mass shooting than the US.

I can do more, but that should illustrate the point.  You are cherry picking, like Scouse does with his Jewish conspiracy arguments.  You take two data points on a line-- the US and Australia and ignore all others, as well as ignoring population size.

You twist things.

You cite SINCE 1996...but INCLUDE 1996.

SINCE 1996 Australia has had ZERO mass shootings.

SINCE 1996 America has had 13 with more than 10 victims...but a mass shooting is defined by FOUR victims. America has had 150.

Australia zero.

That is not proportional.

"Between 1966 and 2012, there were 90 mass shootings in the United States. Mass shootings are defined for the study as having four or more victims and don't include gang killings or slayings that involve the death of multiple family members. These shootings include the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando in June 2016 -- the worst mass shooting in US history -- and others in an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater and at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, both in 2012.

The 90 US mass shootings are nearly one-third of the 292 such attacks globally for that period. While the United States has 5% of the world's population, it had 31% of all public mass shootings."

https://www.investors.com/politics/editorials/sorry-despite-gun-control-advocates-claims-u-s-isnt-the-worst-country-for-mass-shootings/
QuoteA study of global mass-shooting incidents from 2009 to 2015 by the Crime Prevention Research Center, headed by economist John Lott, shows the U.S. doesn't lead the world in mass shootings. In fact, it doesn't even make the top 10, when measured by death rate per million population from mass public shootings.

So who's tops? Surprisingly, Norway is, with an outlier mass shooting death rate of 1.888 per million (high no doubt because of the rifle assault by political extremist Anders Brevik that claimed 77 lives in 2011). No. 2 is Serbia, at just 0.381, followed by France at 0.347, Macedonia at 0.337, and Albania at 0.206. Slovakia, Finland, Belgium, and Czech Republic all follow. Then comes the U.S., at No. 11, with a death rate of 0.089.

That's not all. There were also 27% more casualties from 2009 to 2015 per mass shooting incident in the European Union than in the U.S.

"There were 16 cases where at least 15 people were killed," the study said. "Out of those cases, four were in the United States, two in Germany, France, and the United Kingdom."

"But the U.S. has a population four times greater than Germany's and five times the U.K.'s, so on a per-capita basis the U.S. ranks low in comparison — actually, those two countries would have had a frequency of attacks 1.96 (Germany) and 2.46 (UK) times higher."

When you cherry pick and just compare the US to australia, you get the result you want.  But when you add other countries in you see its not at all like you say.  The US has fewer mass shooting deaths per capita than the UK, Germany and France. all of which have much stricter gun laws.

One minute you use the number of deaths, then revert to the number of incidents.

Both are valid ways of looking at the problem.  Just like yards passing and yards on the ground in a football game (sorry I don't know Australians sports enough to give you examples you can relate to better)

These are the facts--

France has a higher death rate per million than the US in Mass shootings even though they have the same kinds of strict gun laws Australia has.  (along with 9 other European nations)

Germany and the UK have a higher per capita incidence of mass shootings than the US,  Even though their gun laws are like Australias.

So the following statement is not correct

QuoteAmerica has far more mass shootings that any other comparable nation.

So the questions are

1) why is it two nations with strict gun laws (Germany and the UK) have more mass shootings per capita than a nation with more lenient gun laws (the US)?

2) And why is it ten European nations, (some with stricter gun laws like France) have a higher number of people killed in gun mass murders than the US?

Because its clear in those instances gun availabilty is not the prblem.

Maybe firearms are crossing porous borders from countries like the Czech Republic or Switzerland which have gun ownership laws more liberal than the US. I don't know, I am just thinking out loud.

QuoteThe documentary makes a compelling case for the right to bear arms when twenty thousand Christian defenders made of peasants, women, young men and even the elderly, defying the tyranny of the Mexican narco-state decided to fight back. These are the "Autodefensas" (self-defenders). They get scant media coverage from the government controlled Mexican media while the liberal media abroad completely ignores their plight since it involves the right of a people to bear arms. The 'defenders' rejecting Mexico's ban on the right to bear arms is something Americans can appreciate. It responds to liberal politicians and the media's undermining the second amendment by blaming guns instead of villains.

Quote law enforcment failed every single step of the way.

The opportunities were endless in this case. If ONE agency had come through it could have been prevented. But ALL agencies were ineffective

Quote It never should have happened.

But it will.

Even if politicians take all the right steps with genuine enthusiasm (unlikely) it will take a long time to get ALL agencies (from top to bottom) to become effective.

At top levels, the O plants must be flushed down the toilet before there is even a chance FBI etc. will actually do their mandated job.

Knowing how govt works (or rather doesn't work) I have little faith

They can at least prevent some if they actually try

Thats messed up. He was the school resource officer. Not doing anything is pretty cowardice.

Also, the security cameras were on an hour time delay. The police department was watching, but did not know it was on delay til too late.

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/broward/parkland/florida-school-shooting/fl-florida-school-shooting-response-20180221-story.html

And found this in the comment section...

I am a retired Broward County educator and moved here from Illinois in 1998. When I accepted a position at a middle school, there were two security people on staff, securIt's cameras that were monitored throughout the day, and a school resource officer. We knew who our students were because they had picture ID's that they were required to wear. Over the years, we were cut to one security person, no one to monitor the security cameras, no more picture ID's for students, and a shared school resource officer. I was a guidance counselor who had to take on more student supervision responsibilities. Over the course of a week, the time I spent eyeballing kids added up to a full work day. Why the changes? Money.

I repeat what I said elsewhere;

If YOU were a badged up public relations operative with a gun, and YOU were in a position that required YOU to go up against an AR15, vastly outgunned at every level, what would YOU do.

The guy was not a professional police officer. He possessed a PISTOL, but the government allows the other guy to possess an assault rifle derivative.

I challenge any of YOU to go up against such odds in a large and complex school building.

This smacks of a government saying "lets get a few citizens to dress up, give them a day on the range and a badge, and tell them to keep their school safe." Meanwhile an 18 year old nut case can walk into a gun shop and buy an assault rifle.

Don't blame the player...blame the game.

I cannot speak for the states, but 'school liaison' officers here are either RCMP officers, or a Municipal Unit with the same training, essentially.  They are 'full-fledged' Cops, and they are usually also trained on, and carry, 12 Gauge Shot Guns and AR-Type carbines in their vehicles.  They are also trained how to use these weapons effectively.

Policy may vary, but I do know that after Columbine, policy had generally changed (regarding school shooters), to kill the shooter dead as quick as possible.  The old policy of waiting for backup, SWAT, etc., was meant more for bank stick-ups, hostage situations, etc.  The NEW policy is to just go in, and shoot to kill.  That's because school shootings, and other types of random public shootings are a different beast than a bank hold-up or a hostage situation.  You have NO TIME to wait in a school shooting scenario.

THAT was his duty.  THAT was what he was trained to do, and most likely had the firearms in his trunk to engage the shooter.  The clear policy now in a school shooting scenario is to go in and stop the threat immediately.

However, I can't completely fault the officer either, for this one reason:  More than likely most Cops that are well suited for school liaison work, are probably not the best officers to handle a crisis situation like this.  It may be like expecting Mr. Rogers to excel as a SWAT Team member...  Just cannot have the best of both worlds.

Either way, the officer will most likely never work in law enforcement again, and will have to live the rest of his life known as a coward.  THAT in itself is enough punishment for him, IMHO...

You are in no position to criticise, let alone accuse the man of cowardice.

I'm in no doubt that if you were confronted with the same circumstance, you would shit yourself in the knowledge that you are either going to be accused of cowardice by morons, or be killed by a lunatic.

Reports are that he was carrying only a pistol. Would YOU go up against an AR15 with only a pistol that will probably be good for around 20 metres, and afterwards its more luck than expertise. He could empty a 20 or 30 round magazine in around 10 seconds, with reasonable accuracy to around 50 metres in a firefight. You miss, you die.

Talk is cheap, chuck...but open your mouth AFTER you've had to put YOUR life on the line for other people.

His government is the culprit here, bozo. By failing to act when they had all the information needed to take that asswipes gun from him. They did nothing.

Who is the real coward here.

My parents weren't afraid to draw their guns on another cop, thus changing the historical legal framework in Canada for RCMP members ever since...

I'm sure they would've engaged the shooter also, if they had the balls to engage another Cop.

We can all sit here, and pretend to know what we would do in that situation...  We do not.  Some bust in there and save the day, while others do not, regardless of training.

That said, a Police Officer is expected to assume at least some form of risk, as his duty is to protect people, especially children.

Again, there is no doubt that most school liaison officers aren't the 'action' type, and instead chosen for their ability to interact nicely with the children.

I ask again...what is the justification for a modern, law abiding first world country to allow its citizens to possess firearms?

Alcohol is another good example of the same effect,  prohibition made alcohol illegal and people didn;t stop drinking it, instead they bought it on the black market, which is what would happen if you make guns illegal,

I will give you the answer that you want, and you take that as you will...

To 'dis-allow' a Nation like the US, to possess firearms, would be nearly impossible.

There are literally hundreds of millions of firearms floating around.  And that's just what they know...  There could easily be a billion, if every old rifle and six-shooter is counted as still existing...

You cannot wipe that ownership out, Brick.  You just cannot.  It is there, and it is there to stay.

Once again, memes perpetuate myth.

Switzerland has VERY tight gun control laws. Every citizen must do military training, and are issued a firearm to keep in their home, under strict storage procedures. However, they must still apply and qualify for a gun licence as the law requires, but cannot keep ammunition for their military rifle at home.

"In 2016, the defence ministry estimated that 2 million privately owned guns are in circulation, which given a population of 8.3 million corresponds to a gun ownership rate of around 24 guns per 100 residents.[6] This is roughly a quarter of the rate in the United States"

"Of the recorded homicides (attempted or completed), 20.3% were committed with a gun (47 cases, compared to an average of 41 cases in the period of 2009–2015). In addition, there were 7 cases of bodily harm and 233 cases of robbery committed with firearms.[29]"

None of these were committed by military issued firearms.

And Fash is correct; "Permits for concealed carrying in public are issued only extremely restrictively."

Yet again, the gun lobby distorts truth through silly memes.

Most of that is irrelevent.

Bottom line in switzerland any citizen over 18 without a criminal record or psychiatrically disqualified can obtain a gun.  The murder rate in Swtizerland is .5 per hundred thousand and in Australia where guns are very tightly controlled it is double that at 1 per 100,000.

the point being while legal gun availabily MAY be a factor in differing homicide rates between countries, it is certainly NOT the only factor at play, and it probably is not the most important factor.

It seems the Czech Republic has very liberal gun ownership laws.

A gun in the Czech Republic is available to anybody subject to acquiring a shall issue firearms license first. And the czech republic has the same murder rate, 1 per 100,000, that Australia has.

Thus proving once again--when it comes to the differing murder rates between countries, gun availability is clearly not the most important factor.

I dont use fluoride toothpaste, and I buy Deer Park of North America brand water to drink, which is one of the few that dont add fluoride to the water. Im on a well, so no worries about bathing in it, but its a community well, and chlorine gets added to it heavily.

Way too many things! For one its a poison. It also keeps civilians docile, Hitler was the first to test it out on Jewish communities. It calcifies your pineal gland, which is your third eye. Cancer, bones, diabetes, so much. I found this article. Its a long read, but I skimmed most of it. Seems to have a lot of good info on it that I've researched on before. Skim it over....

Ny logic is not just point to two points on a graph, that's the cherry picking fallacy.  My logic is look at several countries.   and when you do, you see that there are  countries where guns are virtually banned that have higher murder rates than the US, and countries where guns are easy to obtain that have very low murder rates as low or lower than Australia.

in general, gun obtainability is not a reliable predictor of different murder rates between countries.

As i explained before. one of the major differences between the US and many European countries  (as well as Australia and Canada) is demographics--we have 13% blacks and 17% hispanics.  and depending on the year picked blacks are 5 to 10 times more likely to kill than whites, and Hispanics are 2 to 3 times more likely.

BTW of all our mass shootings in the last 20 years where over ten were murdered, one third of them have been done by muslims, who are 1% of our population.

Hubby has worked in the chemicals industry and is anal about not having chlorine or fluoride in our drinking water, so we have a 3 stage filtration unit he pieced together. Ceramic, then RO, then UV. It's overkill but it's nice water after it goes through the mineralizer.

You can really taste and feel the difference if you have tap water somewhere else.

The idea of Arming teachers is to have teachers who have taken gun safety clases volunteer, if they want to, to help keep students safe.  It was never "here teacher,  take this gun, even though you've never shot one before"

I mentioned Dicks yesterday, last night was official with Walmart. Some Walmarts do sell guns, I've bought 2 there, one at Dicks, and one at Sportsmen's Warehouse. Out of those 3, you can prolly guess which one will get my money, unless they decide to be like the other 2 guys.

To me, that age is when a father hands down a gun to a son. So maybe that adds to it, as to why that market may be slim. The rest are prolly liberals from the brainwashing they receive

They are getting more expensive, due to the "guns and ammo tax" that Obama put on them.

I mean exactly that, back in 2013. Department of Homeland Security ordered it, 1.6 billion was the first batch. Was more ordered before and after. Hollow points too, which is against rules of war. Supposedly for target practice, but I aint believing that. Why certain agencies got it is weird too, like Social Security, National Marine Fisheries, etc. Its enough bullets to shoot every American 5 times each if not more.

And dont forget the no-hesitation targets, to desensitize law enforcement. More than cardboard thugs, but women, old people and CHILDREN too!

Yeah, It was Janet napolitano of the Obama administration who was buying up bullets.  At the time I had assumed it was a  sneaky way to pull off gun control-- Basically have the government buy up all the ammo so citizens couldn't buy ammo.
