Teacher talks about safety after Florida school shooting, is told to get psych exam, go on leave (//http)
By nearly every account Timothy Locke is one of the most beloved teachers in the Cherry Hill, N.J., school district.
Locke is a veteran of the Iraq war and for the past 17 years he's flavored his classroom lessons at Cherry Hill East High School with real-life experiences.
But on Feb. 22, the veteran school teacher was summoned to the principal's office where his bag was searched, he was placed on administrative leave and was ordered to undergo a physical and a psychiatric evaluation.
According to parents and students Locke's only crime was to address his concerns about school safety with youngsters in his Advanced Placement History class. The teacher feared a similar attack could happen at Cherry Hill East.
"During the course of the conversation he indicated that he would protect his students if something like (Parkland, Florida) happened here," parent Eric Ascalon told "The Todd Starnes Radio Show." "He was raising safety concerns about the school with the students. And the intent of his statement (was that) he would protect his students at all costs."
Imagine that, folks. An Iraq war veteran reassured his students that if someone tried to attack the school, he'd be there to protect them. That's a good thing, right?
Well, the leadership at Cherry Hill East felt otherwise after a student in the classroom complained.
Students by the dozens staged a protest on campus Monday – urging the school to reinstate the teacher.
"A lot of what the school here is doing is trying to shut out what happened in Florida, instead of saying 'this is what we have to do, this is what we're going do next,' how we can fix what we are doing," sophomore Debbie Goldberg told ABC News.
"Mr. Locke, if you're watching, we got your back," said senior Justin Prechodko.
Ascalon said his son was enrolled in one of Locke's classes last year and called him an "amazing teacher who has an ability to connect with the students on a variety of levels."
We here at the Cashew (except Bricktop) have your back Mr. Locke!
That is some bullshit, fuck that principal.
I remember a few years ago, they were gonna ban camo at school cause they thought it was racist. My son's whole wardrobe at the time was camo. He launched a protest, and all his friends joined him, and spread the word that night, that the next day they would all wear camo. And they did, hundreds of students did. He was happy, school dropped the issue. That was a proud moment I had for my son

Schools safer today than in 1990s, study on shootings says
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/feb/27/schools-safer-today-1990s-study-shootings-says/
Despite the horror of the high school massacre in Florida, U.S. schools overall are safer today than they were in the early 1990s, and there is not an epidemic of such shootings, a new academic study is reporting.
Researchers at Northeastern University say mass school shootings are extremely rare, that shootings involving students have been declining since the 1990s, and four times as many children were killed in schools in the early 1990s than today.
"There is not an epidemic of school shootings," said James Alan Fox, the Lipman Family Professor of Criminology, Law and Public Policy at Northeastern. He said more children die each year from pool drownings or bicycle accidents.
There are about 55 million school children in the U.S., the study said, and over the past 25 years, about 10 students on average per year were killed by gunfire at school.
The researchers used data collected by USA Today, the FBI's Supplementary Homicide Report, Congressional Research Service, Gun Violence Archive, Stanford Geospatial Center and Stanford Libraries, Mother Jones, Everytown for Gun Safety, and a New York City Police Department report on active shooters.
Another example of "studies" that actually have no relevance to reality.
The NUMBER of school slaughters is not the problem.
ONE is ONE too many. The rate of children been massacred in schools is neither here nor there to the 17 dead in Florida.
That "study" is like saying more people are killed in country music concerts than heavy metal.
Moving forward ...
Florida Gov. is officially in process of drastically revising all aspects of every department in the chain from law enforcement to social services to school councilors and every agency in between
(While not likely practical) the intention is to reduce killings to "0"
2 victims fathers will be full time involved indefinitely in seeing that all boxes get checked and stay checked
They all hope to set the standard and also pressure all other states do likewise
Fine details to follow

When it is done to the degree that the class becomes pre-occupied with the issue is irresponsible.

Oh, right.
Because "students" are great arbiters of appropriate teacher conduct.
This shooting was a big moment for the left in America. What we're seeing is high schools becoming more like colleges.
and high school kids becoming politicals activists like college students.
Apparently one of the groups funding the kids is the national organization of women (feminazis), and no doubt soros has his tentacles in there too.
This whole charade is another giant leap forward for full totalitarian leftist control of the US.

Several large progressive organizations, donors, and a high-powered public relations firm are backing the March for Our Lives movement, which is quickly evolving from a student-run social media effort to end gun violence into one backed by some of the most influential activists in the country.
Since then, major players and organizations — including Everytown, Giffords, Move On, Planned Parenthood, and the Women's March LA — told BuzzFeed News they are helping the students with logistics, strategy, and planning for next month's March for Our Lives rally and beyond. Much of the specific resources the groups are providing to the Parkland students remains unclear — as is the full list of supporting organizations — but there are broad outlines.
Everytown for Gun Safety — bankrolled mostly by Michael Bloomberg — recently secured a $1 million donation from entrepreneur and philanthropist Eli Broad.
MoveOn (soros NGO) said it will encourage its millions of members to follow and promote the March for Our Lives movement on social media and attend the rally next month. The group said it had offered support in organizing logistics such as security and portable toilets, but it is unclear if the students have taken them up on their offer.
A spokesperson for Planned Parenthood said the group is "teaching and hosting trainings" for young activists across the US "to keep momentum going so they don't get burned out."
Planned Parenthood said it has been in contact with Giffords, which is spearheading the national coalition of groups working with March for Our Lives.
Democratic US Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Broward County resident for nearly 30 years, told BuzzFeed News she has been in touch with students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas since the day after the shooting, helping them connect to state legislators and plan their trip to Tallahassee last week.
Wasserman Schultz said that because this is the first time many of the students have interacted with legislators, she advised them on communication strategy. She also said she been in contact with Mark Kelly — Gabrielle Giffords' husband and one of the founders of the Giffords foundation.
How nice. the worst of the left funding it and supporting it all. The politicization of highschool kids, Another nail in the coffin of the United States.

Nope its a big turning point for the left
1.They have a discovered a new poliotical weapon--using high school kids to push their agenda. Also
2. ignoring the real problem in this case --that the school system and Broward county PD and the FBI messed up horribly. Th is is the real problem that will remain unsolved in order to chase the gun red herring.
Guns aren't the problem, at least not the majority of it. The Czech republic and Switzerland have gun obtainability like the US but have as low or lower homicide rates than Australia.
Why do you keep comparing Australian HOMICIDE rates with those of other countries when we are discussing AMERICAN gun control failure.
Compare America with Australia. 5 times more likely to be murdered in the US than Australia.

Not many teachers will want to be responsible for a handgun.
It shouldn't be forced on unwilling teachers but those who are happy to step up, it shouldbe their option with the right training (unless they already have the necessary skillset).

Police officers train for long periods to deal with armed offender situations.
One of the main priorities is to protect other citizens.
Arm a teacher with basis shooting range practice and innocents will die, starting with the teacher.
That's a load of bollocks. Most cops can't shoot for shit, barely spend enough time at the range every year to stay qualified, and have lost the ability to think first before reacting in a bad way. There is nothing special about cops except maybe how they botch up most of what they touch then blame law abiding citizens for what lawbreakers do.
On top of that, many police actively seek to disarm people and turn them into tantalizing sitting duck victims unable to defend themselves and here in Australia, we can't even own capsicum spray or small arms bulletproof clothing, backpacks, or briefcases.
Imagine that. Disarmed, barred from preventative measures to reduce bodily harm, and told it's for our own safety and that we should call a stupid little three digit phone number and hope we don't die waiting for our cowardly saviours to arrive.
Disgusting.

Quote from: "Dinky Dianna"

I disgree, and will explain why...
My Mother was undercover surveillance, so she never did have to worry much about ever needing to fire her gun in the line of work, because it just doesn't happen with that particular job. And if the shit went down? They would have General Patrol units handle the matter. This is so the undercover operation is never compromised.
When she started, firearms were the standard Model 10, Model 66 S&W's, or the modern variants of them, with whatever barrel length. Revolvers. .38 Special+P.
She never had an issue qualifying with the .38 revolvers. Was a top-notch shot. Every time.
Towards the end of her career, they (RCMP) switched to 9mm semi-auto S&W firearms. This she had a problem with... An unfamiliar firearm, with a round that kicked much more than the old .38.
She failed qualification with the new gun.
Since she was undercover, she got a smaller aluminum slide version of the new pistol. Wore that slide out, attempting to qualify. They would not let her pass, until she could qualify. Once that slide was worn out, they ordered her a steel slide version of the same pistol (smaller pistol, but similar as to what General Patrol would carry), and she finally past the qualifying with the 9mm.
Recoil was a problem for her, and she was not young anymore by that time.
Nonetheless, she had to shoot literally thousands of rounds, to prove her capabilities.
I am a good shooter... I brought her my own target from the range, after only six shots, which equaled her many thousands of rounds to hit the same groups!
I am a natural shooter though, and she was not. So yes, most Cops, even those that will most likely never draw their firearm, are still held to quite high standards regarding firearm abilities. It's no joke.
They granted her extension after extension to keep packing the .38 S&W Snubby, while the force moved on to 9mil S&W's.
Eventually they could not grant extensions anymore. She was probably one of the last RCMP officers in Canada to carry a .38 Snubby as a Duty revolver.
Which brought us to another discussion... What's more important? Knowing how to shoot a particular firearm well, or being forced to pack a firearm that one is not so great with?
This is a discussion that will no longer happen.

My mom carried a .38 snubby too. Im not a fan of semi-auto pistols either, Im a much better shot with a revolver.
If you were to ask me, its more important to carry and fire a firearm that you are good with and familiar with, than being forced to use to something that is the opposite.
