The MON/BAYRY deal is just one example of firms in the sector shacking up. DuPont (DD ) and Dow Chemical (DOW ) are in talks about joining forces. That merger of equals was very much about seeds, crop nutrients and weed killer rather than commodity chemicals. The same can be said for ChemChina's $43 billion buy-out of Syngenta (SYT ).



The reason for the rise in buyouts and M&A activity can come down to the fact that stocks in the agriculture sector have just gotten so cheap relative to their long term outlooks.



As China has begun to slow, it voracious demand for all things commodity has hit prices for various agriculture commodities especially hard. Near term demand just simply isn't there. Stock piles remain relatively high. Not helping the cause has been better weather around the globe as well as the rising dollar. Better weather conditions, for the most part, has help extend growing seasons of many agriculture stock commodities, while the rising dollar has hit direct pricing for all natural resources.



All of this has hurt the various agriculture stocks right in the wallets. There's less need for specialty chemicals, seeds, tractors and other equipment. As a result shares for the sector have been hit hard. The broad-based Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (MOO ) is down nearly 16% over the last 52 weeks. Likewise, the fertilizer heavy Global X Fertilizers/Potash ETF (SOIL ) is down about 28%.



Those are some pretty nasty drops over the relatively short period of time. But it's enough for firms to seriously start buying out rivals. And it could be enough for investors to start planting agriculture stocks into their portfolios as well.



The long term picture is certainly much rosier. Today's worldwide population sits at around seven billion people. That's already a lot of mouths to feed. However, forecasts estimate that by 2040, that number will rise to 9 billion. To feed our expanding world, food output will have to increase by roughly 70% over the next four decades just to keep up with demand.



That's a much different demand situation that the near term and ultimately result in rising prices and profits for the agriculture stocks. The sector sees this coming and is using the downturn to position themselves accordingly by buying up cheap rivals.



The real beauty is that not only do investors have the potential for some serious capital gains over the long haul, many of the top agriculture stocks are dividend stalwarts in their own right and have continue to churn-out dividends in the recent downturn.



A prime example of this could be Mosaic (MOS). The firm produces 12% of the world's potash and 13% of the world's phosphates. These fertilizers are critical soil nutrients. The unfortunate thing for MOS is that prices for them have plunged over the last year. As has MOS's stock price. But that 44% plunge now gives investors a juicy 3.95% yield, a low payout ratio and long term dividend growth at a cheap price.



The same could be said about cross-border fertilizer rival Agrium (AGU ). Albeit, the drop in price has not as dramatic, investors are able to pick-up a 4.08% dividend yield and similar low payout ratio. The key for AGU stock was that Nitrogen prices haven't collapsed as much.



Finally, an interesting buy could be John Deere (DE ). Deere has just been obliterated in the wake of China's slowdown. However, the maker of tractors and construction equipment has been focusing on innovation to win the day. New products, driverless tractors and sensors that tackle items such as soil moisture levels are designed to help farmer save time and money. These higher margined items should help DE continue on its history of dividend growth, even though China is buying less equipment. DE yields 2.88%



The Bottom Line

The rise in M&A activity in the agriculture sector could be letting investors know that values are to be had. The sector is certainly beat-up enough. But for those investors willing to do some digging, there's plenty of dividends to be had. The previous picks—along with Archer Daniels Midland (ADM ) —are just some of the dividend paying bargains in the sector.[/size]

Spread the hot rice about an inch thick. Sprinkle generously with the furikake until most of the surface is covered. Quickly stir the rice so that the furikake is distributed throughout. The warmer the rice, the easier this step is.

Line the inside of the Spam can with plastic wrap. Using a small spoon, scoop the rice into the container, packing down firmly after each scoop. Let it chill in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.

Pull the rice out of the container by the plastic wrap, and slice it into 8 slices. This is easier to do if you dip the knife in water.

Top each slice of rice with a slice of Spam.

Cut the nori into 1/2 inch strips. Wrap around, making the ends meet at the bottom. Use a little bit of water to make the ends stick together.

Enjoy!

Gotta be fried, I agree lol. Mom use to make fried spammiches when I was younger. I kinda miss it, but prolly wouldnt buy another can for a long time again lol. I actually bought a can recently, havent decided when to eat it yet lol.



Do ya know the fried bologna trick, so it dont curl up when you fry it.... cut a few slits in it from the outer edge towards the center halfway.

I agree too with ya Fash, maybe Bricktop can learn a thing or 2 from my old man, he once  used to had a surgery to expand his blood vessels/arteries since they were clogged, after that he felt too far from comfort and too close to death, at least now he lives his life everyday as a health junkie.

As we progressed, it became clear that there were YEARS of warnings...but I just regarded them as "normal". That came as a bit of a shock.



Anyway...I'm home, a little tired and worn out but in fair spirit and out of pain and discomfort. Thank you all for your concern.

Thanks, Azhya...it's been a hell of a month all round. A burst water pipe in our front garden added to the mayhem, but it caused no damage and was just a nuisance.

Do not expect any insurance company to just hand over a cheque. More than one home owner has had an unpleasant surprise after disasters like a storm or fire.

I am not sure...but given that the insurance companies are being "flooded" with claims from stricken areas of Queensland and New South Wales ( ac_toofunny ) I suspect it is.



As we live on a hilltop, flooding is no risk. If we are flooded, then pretty much the entire city of Adelaide will be several metres underwater, so we are not insured against flooding.

In fact, we've just had a Royal Commission into the banking sector which revealed some rather dastardly conduct undertaken by banks in dealing with customers. As a result the government has imposed several new rules and policies under which banks must now operate to curtail deceptive and even fraudulent behaviour. As a small example, banks used to advertise a loan rate of, say, 5%...which immediately appealed to home buyers. What they either concealed, or added in very small print on their advertisements was that was for the first year only...then it will increase to market rates. That was declared unlawful, and anyone who signed up for loans believing they were in 5% for the life of the loan were given the opportunity to be released from the contract. Australians do not like corporations screwing people.



Insurance companies, health insurance companies, private lenders and investment companies are similarly monitored and regulated.

That is a GWR 4900 series steam locomotive. It has a 4-6-0 wheel configuration. We used the 4-6-4 here during that era.

I told them I was 36 (at the time), and their jaws dropped lol. They told me I didnt look any older than 25, and my friend hollered up "take your hat off!"  :laugh:



Same at the Jam when I started going there. I offered a beer to the first person to guess my age, and no one would guess beyond 29. When I revealed my age, one guy said "must be one of those take your hat off things" lol.



I think I get my young looks from my mom. She aged well too.

Yup. Pretty much everything is now. Private gatherings are restricted to 50 people with funerals and weddings restricted to 100. Borders closed to Victoria and New South Wales and that's about it. Compared to other places we're doing it easy. Adelaide is home to around 1 million people but is geographically larger than the Greater London Metropolitan area, because we all live in houses on large blocks. Any high density residences have until recently been restricted to 3 stories, although newer ones can go much higher now.



We also do not have the same "multicultural" issues as, say, Melbourne. Freud may know better than I, but as we understand it, the core of their inability to get the virus under control is that certain cultural enclaves refuse to comply with covid management practices. Allah akhbar.
