I could probably find something there that's edible for this Western White boy...
Its all edible.
Singapore's hygiene standards exceed most western countries. If food is served that is not appealing, that place may as well shut down, because customers won't show up.
Health inspectors visit randomly, and if a place fails to comply they are shut down forthwith...usually ending their business on the spot.
Food is always fresh and freshly cooked.
Its a great place for food!!
Obviously different from China then! In BC, we can pull up inspection results of eateries, and I'll leave it to you to figure out the eateries that generally top the list for fails...

Be a mean cook and cook at home.
I often do, but in this case this thread assumes you'll be traveling... Most people just budget to eat out when traveling, instead of trying to cook things in hotel room.
Hotel rooms rarely provide cooking facilities.
Apartments do, but at considerable cost, and usually unserviced.
Thanks Brick. That's awesome help...

I don't see a trip to South East Asia on the horizon. But, I would like to see Singapore. It's the safest place in the world and it's in an area of growing islamic extremism. And they city state is 15 per cent muslim to boot. They must keep islam on a short leash.
Singapore is a tiny speck just below 80 million Malaysian muslims. However, Singapore is perhaps the model of a multicultural society that actually works. Every citizen not only has equal rights, but MUST, by law, have equal access to housing. If a new apartment block is built, the owner must reserve a certain number of units for each ethnic group. There is no segregation. Each group has representation in the country's parliament. Muslims live and work alongside Chinese, Malays and Indians. In the third picture down, you will see a muslim woman serving Chinese customers at a HALAL food stall (no pork, no lard according to a sign). No-one feels alienated, no-one is excluded, no-one is treated as anything less than a citizen the same as everyone else.

Malaysia has a population of about thirty two million of which 61.3 per cent is Muslim.
Yep. My mistake. You are correct. Around 30 million. Still, compared to Singapore its still a big neighbour.
Of course, there is also Indonesia. 250 million muslims.

I never knew military service was mandatory there too, while I bet most parents would think this might be harsh and brutal, but imo I believe joining the army is the greatest way to put any teen into top shape.
It doesn't sound surprising if Canada and Singapore's pilots do joint military training together, when I was a kid my brother always talks about the RCAF pilots being amongst the top in the world.

It takes a lot of space for air force training. That's something Singapore doesn't have.

We didn't really like the feel of the place ... thankfully our plans to operate out of and live there were changed at the last minute and we set up in Makati instead.
But did have some funny things happen there
During a visit to Sing with my mate , they had a serial hotel elevator pee'r in on the loose ..... so they set moisture sensors in the carpeting and an alarm rang in the security office
They caught him when he got to the main floor and it was headlines in the Straight Times
As to the Airport, on another trip alone mate noticed a grossly overweight and "unmistakable from behind" business friend from California at the Airport urinal so he stepped up beside him and said loadly "Chuck .. We really gotta stop meeting this way"
Chuck broke up and laughed so hard he pissed on his pants .. several local english speakers also broke up and in fact explained it all to those who missed it or didn't speak english . Fortunately Chuck saw the humor in it
Overall we were very uncomfortable in the clearly authoritarian city / country where the slightest misque or misinterpretation can be disastrous
I'm not seeing a logical reason not to like the place?
Because some people urinated improperly?
Have you been to London? Paris? Bangkok?
No silly goose, that was merely a story - I could never enjoy an authoritarian atmosphere c/w human robots on the sidewalks when away from tourist hotels .. . no matter how "perfect" the trappings are ...
It and China (several times and cities) we could not get out of fast enough .. and as to "authoritarian atmosphere" they felt much the same
As to the cities, 2 of the 3 and MANY more ... chose smaller Puket over Bangkok
Some countries prefer authority over inconsistency and uncertainty.
I'm warming more and more to it. Our current system doesn't work.
I do understand that some prefer order. For most in those 2 countries, they know nothing of being free to think beyond just intellectually .. it's simply "what is" .. or normal to them .. No decisions to make and big brother takes care of everything and / or has rules for everything
For me I choose to be surrounded by "people" ... independent people .. or no one .... and not surrounded by and packed in with what I saw as human robots in Sing and China
Several trips to both were strictly because of business conventions and business dealings ... and were as short as we could possibly make them
Agreed that our system is not working well at this point in time and seems to already be set up to never work.

It is worthwhile considering what OUR situation looks like to more authoritarian nations?
Our political tumult, in almost all democracies, is embarrassing. THEY notice that our free and democratically elected politicians seem to act outside the interest of the average citizen. They see corruption at the highest level. They see homelessness despite great wealth. They see rules change as governments change, and judge us unreliable.
Democracy has hit the wall of reality. The illusion that because we vote, we are "free" is falling away. They may know nothing of being free...but if you think YOU do, you're not thinking rationally. Your money is stolen from you for expenses you do not support. Your speech is being restricted on a daily basis. The political class is elitist. Your courts serve the villains, and your media serve their owners.
You are far from free. You may be able to speak your mind...at the moment...more critically than in other countries, but the reality is no-one listens, so they don't care what you say.
The difference between us and them is we get to choose our dictators.
