...after buying a big old container of mixed nuts.
It contains Brazil nuts (aka Nigger Toes, but probably best not to call 'em that anymore), and I learned that Brazil nuts are extremely high in Selenium content. In fact, nothing contains more Selenium than Brazil nuts.
While the body seems to need a very small amount of Selenium, eating only six (6) Brazil nuts already puts one over the recommended daily maximum limit for this element, and regular consumption of larger amounts of these nuts can lead to selenium toxicity, so I picked them all out and ate them all at once just to see what happens...
 maybe you'll go through a spontaneous metamorphosis in your sleep and wake up with a beak and blue feathers.

What are you doing eating nuts!?!?! Shouldn't you be chowing on meat?? And nothing but meat??

I think my Grandmother did too, but the shelled version for some reason.
Here is another thing I learned: Shelled Brazil nuts can go rancid quite quickly, so it's best to buy them unshelled if you actually want to keep them around for eating at a later date!
So you're a nut nibbler now?
I eat a variety of almost everything...

That guy made millions with his fucking chamois towels...
I can't watch those commercials...theyre so cheesy....I don't understand how millions of people get suckered into it.
The most hilarious one was a beer maker....some old white guy was making the beers and this chubby blonde chick was sampling all of them and getting way overly excited...makes ya wonder when the dildo was gonna pop out?

Our parents did too. They'd buy 5 or 6 different kinds of unshelled nuts and bring out their toy soldier nutcracker dolls or decorative units for us to play with.

Father's side. His grandmother.
He used to drag us kids to the Nutcracker ballet on ice. We hated it, but during intermission people dressed up as Looney Toons characters took to the ice and we loved that.
Figured so...
What? Kids like seeing Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd chasing each other across the ice! :)
The shelled Nigger Toes and Nutcrackers are really a Germanic thing. From the school of old.
Figured there had to be some German in there for your family to do that...

Funny family history story:
The Bavarian mother of my great grandmother married a local Jewish farmer in his 40's when she was 18, then he died unexpectedly leaving her with young children and a huge weight on her equally young shoulders. So she took her father's advice and married the lead hand. Couple more children came of that and him running off with the profits of the sale of the land.
She was destitute, humiliated, freaked out about how she would be able to feed her kids, and a white knight swooped in. Her first village crush. He didn't go through the formalities of the time. He basically got down on his knee or whatever they did at that time and said 'I've got safe passage for us and all of the kids to Australia. Come with me. I'll never leave you'.
He never did. They were good people.

I have no German ancestry and we had toy soldier nutcrackers too..
I still have one.

That's actually kind of strange, as they were pretty much strictly a German thing, only becoming popular outside of Europe when returning US soldiers brought them back with them after WWII...

The war ended in 1946. Fash was born in the '70's, as was I.
Kraut Trinket Tyme! These music boxes are both older than me, and they still work...

I knew an older lady who was German...such a hoarder...she collected everything. She had hundreds of music boxes...anyway...when she died her husband have everything away.
I couldn't imagine living a life being surrounded in junk.
Hundreds is overkill, but that's what hoarders do. Holding on to a couple of pieces that have mild sentimental value, is OK though...

Huh...ive never read about it in any book about Germans...weird.
The Black Forest is a mountain range in Southwest Germany. Anything associated with the 'Black Forest' term can (should) only originate from there...
Interesting.

Have traveled through some of the Black Forest area some time back. It is a fantastic area
Returned home with a beautiful tall music stein ... it played when lid was lifted - prolly a "tourist" thingy?

I never said they were rare. I simply stated that I found it curious that they'd be a 'thing' in Taiwan, since Germany and Taiwan share very little in the way of traditions.

We had them here in Calgary..
But, you can find them in Taiwan..
It's very prosperous and Westernized and it used to host American servicemen until 1979.
I believe that is cultural appropriation. Unless you have some German lineage, I hereby issue a nutcracker cease and desist order effective immediately.

No, it's a real thing. But classically it's a torte, and the German name is more like Black Forest Cherry Torte. It's usually laced with kirschwasser, a clear brandy distilled from sour cherries.
American bakeries also put out "black forest cake" but around here it's not authentic and not very good.
