Title: They don't want you to run Windows 7 anymore...
Post by: Chuck Bronson on August 15, 2018, 07:58:55 PM
...and today they already started to make that clear for me, by manufacturing in certain difficulties, changes, bugs, and basically gimping it so you get sick of using it, even though it's still supported until 2020.

First hassle today:  They have removed my control for Windows 7 update settings, all on their own.  I have only run one user account on my system, and it has always been an Administrator account.  I have never had an issue taking full control of settings, until today, when it decided to lock me out of the ability to manually install updates (which I have ALWAYS done until today).

I'm not sure what the workaround is for this, but I know this 'issue' just didn't 'randomly' decide to appear today.  Something had obviously given the O/S the instruction to do this...  Not impressed.  Now I get to fuck around on Google for hours trying to find the fix...  Thanks, Microsoft.

So, I see my O/S has decided to download and install these four updates today automatically, when it should not have.  I have ALWAYS had updates set to MANUAL.

It decided to over-ride my settings, and one of these updates no doubt also locked me out of update control...

I'll remove a couple of these updates, and see if I can gain control again.

The reason I run Windows 7 is because I want as much control over my system as I can (just like Hitler).  Many people still run 7 for the same reasons.

I don't know if I get get these issues worked out, but this O/S had NO FUCKING BUSINESS downloading and installing ANY fucking update without my permission, nor should it have had the ability to lock me out of these settings.

If I wanted no control over my system, I'd be using a Google or Android device.

Things have gone from bad to worse.  Now I can't even disable Windows Update at all.

Somebody at Microsoft fucked up big time with today's (automatically forced) updates, and it does appear that short of doing a clean install, the only thing I can hope for now is that the fucking idiots in Redmond release another update soon that fixes this colossal fucking disaster they just forced upon me.

The people should NOT have to put up with this intrusive shit that's forced upon us in every conceivable way.  We should be able to opt out.  We shouldn't need a legal team and a computer programming team to understand and change the activity of an operating system.

I'll tell you this much...  If it wasn't for gaming compatibility, I would've ditched Windows O/S years ago.

Here's an interesting fact...  Almost 50% of people running Windows are still running Windows 7, so I cannot be the only one that noticed this little 'boo-boo' that they forced upon us today.  Hopefully a fix will be released soon, since I don't really feel like spending days doing a clean install.

I'm not a big gamer at all, but once in a while I'll power one up...  Currently GTAV and Far Cry 5 are the go-to on my desktop.  I have a short attention span, so don't game for very long each session, but that's OK...

I still demand my PC be able to game on high quality with good frame rates though!

hmm I'm kind of like you too, lol except I'm either hooked and play for hours a day or not touch my games for a few months, think it's mainly due to my OCD.
Title: Re: They don't want you to run Windows 7 anymore...
Post by: Chuck Bronson on August 15, 2018, 11:09:33 PM
I have a very short attention span, and get really bored with doing the same thing after while, so a game like GTAV I'll probably completely finish not long before the next one is released!

Plus, I often don't have the time to completely immerse myself into a game for hours at a time.  Usually an hour or two is an average session, and that's here and there.

That sucks on your 7, they try the same with me on XP, dont want me using it anymore.

As far as Mac, they are worse when it comes to "if you dont have the latest". Shit wont even work on your browser if your other hardware/software aint up to date.

I think they are trying to force us to accept the new, because it gives the alphabet groups more backdoor access. And we know they love taking it in the backdoor! Now they want us to do the same.

After a little more fucking around, I have found a solution that worked for me!

I went into Registry Editor, found the subfolder and deleted the 'AU subkey', as directed in image below, and now I have full control back!  It's the only thing that worked!

Not that many here are running 7 as far as I know, but if anyone ever does happen to run into this problem, this is the solution, at least for my O/S...

That's exactly what it is!  They just want to know every single god damned thing we do, what we look at, what we eat, when we leave, where we go, etc.

It's getting a little too excessive!

I keep windows around specifically to open files created in Windows.

Its just basically a 'file opener' which essentially serves the same real life function as a can opener.

Otherwise i don't think it's a very good operating system.

Actually cc, what are your thoughts on the linux system?

Will autodesk one day jump pn the linix developers bandwagon?

I went to siggraph the other day and there was a lot of software beong developed and released for it.

There was one really impressive software featured called ESRI from Switzerland.

Seemed it could do a lot what revit could do and it was released for mac windows and linux.

You overrate yourself, buckwheat. The fact that I question your contribution, or lack thereof, is not a sign of aggravation, but simply a question. I repeat, and as you've just demonstrated, why bother being a member here when your contributions are simply pokes at members you apparently hold in scorn. A question you ignore, which seems to further highlight your lack of respect for the members here.

Aggravation? Nope.

A very clever and potent little piece of technology, but with limited benefit to most people who would use them.

They are very good to provide alerts that your phone is ringing in noisy places (or for women who put theirs in their handbag), are useful as health monitoring devices, and for controlling things like music and video without the need to access your phone. In truth, I do not wear mine often. I bought it more as a watch collector than for any real benefit. I know that business people will find them much more useful for managing appointments, taking notes and checking calendars when on the go. Other than that...what else CAN they do, really?

You sure cant write emails on them (but you can dictate them....which is quite handy, really). Ditto messages.

I would suggest its horses for courses. They can be useful if you wish to make them so.

No Microsoft.

I know you've posted about the Apple watch before, but you could give us your opinion of it again please?

A very clever and potent little piece of technology, but with limited benefit to most people who would use them.

I do.

I also have a samsung.

For prettiness & presentation I use apple.

All the chix will think yer 'with it' ifya own an iphone.

But for practicality, getta Samsung. They're way better for functionality than apple and can usually had for much cheaper.

Jeez no wonder Apple sued Samsung. Because they made an equivalent product or better for less money.

So, my fix didn't work.  Although removing the subkey permitted me control of update settings, what the O/S is now doing is simply downloading and installing all upgrades anyhow, but now it does not even notify me when doing so!

Whatever was in the last group of updates, has essentially allowed my O/S to now do whatever it wants, bypassing all commands that are set to NOT permit it to do this.

This is actually something that's probably against the law for them to do, to be quite honest.

What I'll do, is attempt to completely disable Windows Update on both my regular account and the Administrators account, and will see if this behaviour continues...

You should switch to Linux or unix Mel.

That will give you the control you desire and need eh

You can even dress up linux to look like windows or install it on your pc along with wondows.

I suspect windows will one day become passe.

The hard core like yourself are growing tired of it and are ready for a change or something else

I would switch to an O/S that permits me full control, but I also very rarely do game, and I also want the ability to game any game, on Ultra settings, without problems...

This is where Windows holds their Ace in the hole...
