If the Catholic Church is to be truly repentant, it must first compensate all victims with a minimum $1M USD each. Bear in mind this will barely make a dent in its vast wealth.
It must then have its tax exempt status cancelled until further order...and that order will be contingent on the Church demonstrating it has put in place policies and procedures that ensure institutionalised abuse of children can never happen again. This includes such actions as eliminating the confidentiality of their idiotic "confessional".
All priests involved in the abuse should be defrocked, along with any Bishop that oversaw the diocese in which the abuse occurred, regardless of whether or not its proved that the Bishop was aware of the abuse. Any Cardinal in direct line with the management of the diocese should be demoted. Any priest accused of abuse shall be suspended, and if the accusation is proven, dismissed forthwith.
The Church must then reform from within. The moronic policy of celibacy must be withdrawn, as well as priests being male only. These policies alone attract predators.

However, I want the standard of beyond reasonable doubt to remain intact so in the event they were lying for personal gain an innocent man does not end up going to prison. In this instance justice failed. A man who was not proven beyond reasonable doubt was sent to prison, thus eroding the system as a whole.
And that should concern all of us.

Because we really do not know if he's innocent or guilty based on the information provided by the prosecution but he's going to prison anyway.
