No more NAFTA (//http)
Trump understood the simple math that countries with which we have trade deficits would have to come to the negotiating table.
Last year, the USA had a large $71 billion trade in goods deficit with Mexico, owing in part to much lower worker pay. This new deal will limit Mexico's ability to take U.S. manufacturing jobs by underpaying workers.
This victory will lead to others. The leftwing government of Canada, the other member of NAFTA, had refused to negotiate seriously, perhaps believing their friends in the progressive commentariat predicting Trump's demise.
Canada's foreign minister, Chrystia Freeland, spent most of her time on visits to the U.S. lobbying governors and congressmen rather than talking seriously to our trade negotiators. Her boss, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, even though it was a good idea to antagonize Trump at his failed G7 summit in June.
Canada must now return, hat in hand, for a deal. If not, Trump will advance the deal with Mexico and leave Canada behind. Today he again vowed to raise car tariffs on Canada if it refuses to revise unfair levies of nearly 300 percent on some American goods, among other unfair practices.
The European Union and China will also be greatly concerned about the Mexico deal—and more likely to negotiate seriously.
The US/Mexico will force Mexico to pay higher wages to auto workers or cars will be made in Canada and the states.
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/27/us-mexico-trade-deal-buoys-auto-stocks.html
The deal's provisions allow for import tariffs on cars and trucks that do not get at least 75 percent of their content from within the NAFTA region of the U.S., Canada and Mexico, or use a higher proportion of labor that makes at least $16 an hour. That provision would incent car makers to push more of their production into the U.S. or Canada from lower-wage Mexican plants, or buy more parts from outside of Mexico.
This then may not be the worst thing...

I am cautiously optimistic. Trump will want to do this and a deal with Canada before he loses the house in November.
Yes, It could work out "fairly" well for Canada IF he plays his cards right from here on
a bit of well deserved grovelling would help it along

Instead of talking to governors, Freeland will need to talk to the White House. A good deal can be had. We had to give up three per cent dairy for the TPP. We will need to make a concession for a good bilateral trade deal with the US.

Give up dairy tariffs and we could get a good deal.
Canada needs to carefully rethink its foreign relations.
Its running out of friends, fast.
Pressure on Canada to forge new trade deal within days after U.S. and Mexico reach two-way agreement
President Donald Trump suggested Canada has until Friday to negotiate its way into the accord before it's sent for review– or face stiff tariffs on auto exports
U.S. law requires 90 days of review by Congress before the administration can formally sign a trade accord, which makes Friday, the last day of August, the unofficial deadline.

I believe Justine and crew will deliberately not get a deal. Getting a deal is good for Canada, but bad for his reelection hopes. Naive people in this country actually think Justine is defending their interests against big bad Trump. Besides, changing the dairy supply management system will cost them votes in Quebec.

If that is true, he's unfit to be our prime minister.

Why does Trudeau have to grovel to Trump, cc?
And if it were a PM Scheer or Harper, would they have to grovel too?
The USA actually has a goods and setvices trade surplus with Canada of over $10 billion or $8.4 billion.
Even a US government website admitted this in plain writing:
https://ustr.gov/countries-regions/americas/canada
I'm not quite sure what the problem is here.
Is it just a case of the USA not getting enough?
Or does Trump just want more, take everything from Canada and bury its economy?
Why does Trump want to scuttle an agreement which is already beneficial to the USA?
I understand certain nations Trump may have a gripe like China or even Mexico.
But Canada? C'mon. It doesnt make sense.

Yes, you deserve a better leader and so do most canadians (not joe of course)
All Trudeau has to do is drop the dairy tariffs and free trade can commence.
But I think Herman is 100% right.Trudeau will ignore what's best for Canada in order to try and trick and divide underinformed, media manipulated, Canadian voters into siding with him against trump.
we'll see.
^^^ he is stuborn and unrealistic enough to do exactly that .. .we'll see
Justine's initial embarrassing position was that trans and EVERY PC cause had to be part of any new deal
I'm guessin that didn't fly with US and Mexico and will not even be a talking point
The poor fool just looks sillier and sillier as time goes on .... and he has pissed away any time he had and has to put up or shutup now .. as his native language says "toute de suite'
Seems US and Mex are not greatly concerned about canada getting in, so justine has virtually zero negotiating power left

I didn;t know about the PC stuff.
When I read about it, most media stories just blamed trump and never mentioned milk tariffs (and certainly not PC trans stuff)
then a I read couple that tried to justify the milk tariffs. No mention of PC trans stuff, I'm not surprised though, the media hates trump and they probably thought it would distract from their narrative to let that info out there so they didn't report it.
