Which snakes are poisonous in South Australia?

ALL of them!!!

There are no harmless snakes in this State. Pythons and non-venomous species are in the tropics, up north. Every species in this State are lethal. Hence the signs.

It would be easy to clear the scrub, cover it in concrete...but we tend to live with our critters. Kids are aware that they must stay away, and if they see a snake to adopt the snake safety response. Stand still, be quiet, and wait for it to move away.

Lots of snakes where I lived in Queensland. But, there weren't people getting killed by them like I saw in other places around the world.

Live and let live...snakes don't want to hurt humans. Just let them slide on by.

They have similar signs now in the Okanagan here, but it's Rattler specific.  Although not usually fatal, you will nonetheless want to avoid getting bit by a Rattle Snake!

I lived in a heavily wooded area for a couple of years as a kid.  I saw a garter snake, never a rattler even though I went searching all over the place for beer cans  which i collected.

I hear while the snakes are poisonous, unlike Africa, in AUS they are not aggressive. Like you say leave them lone and they will leave you alone,.  But of course if you step on one by accident or reach under a rock you are going to be sorry.

Remember though, that I have Uncle and cousins that live there too, so I still visit occasionally...

Tiger snakes can be quite aggressive here. Especially when hot. Sometimes putting distance between them is safer than stop and wait.

They are generally shy and placid unless agitated, although as Freud says, tiger snakes can be cantankerous and wise heads make some distance if they can. Trouble is kids don't know the difference, so still best to stand and wait. Snakes have no need to attack humans, as they cannot eat us (other than pythons). They only bite in self defence.

As Wazzer states, putting your hands in places snakes like is dumb. If you HAVE to look under a rock, use a LOOOOONG stick. Wear boots in the bush, and carry a first aid kit.

Canadian insects are all pretty chill.  We have Black Widow spiders around, but they're pretty rare to see, and even rarer to interact with.

All the other insects are chill.  I found this fucker chillin' on my ceiling last night.  Don't know how he even got in.  Maybe a baby cricket/grasshopper?  Not too sure...

I caught him with a glass jar, and ejected him safely outside where he belongs...  That's just how Ace operates.

The only biological family I have left in all of Canada is one Uncle and two cousins, that live in the Okanagan.

I looked at some pics of tiger snakes and many are hard to indentify so if I met a snake in AUS i wouldn't know whether to be still or run.

Tiger snakes have more pronounced bands and are larger.

Browns tend to be skinnier and without the markings or less of them.

There are colour variations on many islands due to genetic evolution.

Can be quite long but often on the skinnier side, especially Eastern Browns. 6 foot long is not uncommon.

Tigers look meaner and more malevolent, but are easily distinguished once you've seen them. The bands are quite noticeable compared to the more evenly marked varieties.

If it seems to be ignoring you, just stand and wait.

What an unusual name for a company.
Title: Re: Only in Australia
Post by: Bricktop on September 05, 2018, 02:23:19 AM
Not at all.

The name is based on the ability of the emu to run on all terrain while maintaining its head perfectly level...a characteristic it shares with the ostrich and cassowary. It takes the literal name from an old Aussie favourite bush song.

"He can't fly but I'm telling you...he can run the pants off a kangaroo"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZLx4Os8TBs

So the makers compare the ability of the emu to the ability of your 4x4 when negotiating rough surfaces. Apparently they're extremely good.

And lots of $$$$$.

Most 4x4's here lift their suspension with Old Man Emu.

Interesting Brick, I didnt know that on the origin. You are right that they are good, on the Jeep forum I get on they are highly recommended. For cheaper but good, its Zone, more expensive is Currie and Savvy. OME is right above midgrade, but best for the cost. The whole kit was $1500. Came with JKS front and rear track bars, JKS front (quick disconnect) and rear sway bar links, and bumpstops.

Because of lifting the vehicle, I need to recenter the axles, so I need adjustable track bars, and JKS was the brand that came in the kit. I wanted to go Metalcloak brand, but stuck with the kit. Also thats the brand of front and rear sway bar links I got. The fronts are quick disconnect so I get flexy! And do things like this...

One mistake and you're in the market for new wheels.

True, but I dont usually do stuff that I dont feel confident about doing.

I do need new wheels though lol. Just got new tires, 31x10.5 BFGoodrich All Terrain KO2s. Figured pay off the lift then maybe new wheels next year, I want black ones. The ones I have now are factory and they have clear coat failure, plus a couple chips.

Nope, not if you have good components underneath. They have independent control arms that allow them to do that. I just replaced all 8 of them. Flexing is normal for a Jeep

You must do a lot of bush bashing to wear suspension out!!!

On top of that, my job is an hour away too, but passes her house lol. I drive roughly 35,000 miles a year.

Happily, we live adjacent to open bushland which is where they flock...rather than in the street and nearby houses.

They don't hang around long, and the main irritation is their incredibly loud shrieking.

Look like Corellas to me. Although they are very similar birds and both cockatoos, the sulphur crest distinguishes one from the other. The Corella has a red crest which is much smaller than the sulphur crest.

When the sulphur crest is retracted they are almost identical to the untrained eye.

(I've just taken a closer look at the video. It's not good resolution but from the birds close to the photographer perched on the street light they are very clearly Corellas)

Lol she turned 30 this year. But we broke up last Independence Day.

Do you have a new gal?

Nope, not even a date in 10 months. Corona got things fucked. The few I got interested in, all were married turned out lol. I look for ring fingers now lol.

You'll meet your girl when she meets her man, and it will blow both of your minds...

Sounds very promising lol.

I have a kind of gal in my mind, but seems like a needle in a haystack lol.

What is wrong with meeting someone in a church or synagogue? It wll be somebody who shares your values.
