It was a condensed version of this three minute clip below...

The separatist "government" of Taiwan is paying for it. They are trying to give the impression Taiwan is a country.

Taiwan is governed by democratic principles.
China is governed by tyrannical, xenophobic dictators.
Maybe when China catches up in that regard, and is very very nice to them, Taiwan will annex it

It's a bit long, so I'll have to watch at another time.
While Taiwan may not be the most aesthetically pleasing country, it is worth a trip. Beautiful mountains and lakes, advanced infrastructure, terrific cuisine and some of the most friendly and helpful people you will meet anywhere.
I'd love to go.
But we tend to visit Singapore which has nearly the same attributes but for the scenery. There isn't any.
China's reaction will be predictable.
U.S. State Department approves possible $2.2 billion arms sale to Taiwan
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department has approved the possible sale to Taiwan of M1A2T Abrams tanks, Stinger missiles and related equipment at an estimated value of $2.2 billion (£1.76 billion), the Pentagon said on Monday, despite Chinese criticism of the deal.
China's Foreign Ministry said last month when the possible sale was first reported that it was seriously concerned about U.S. arms sales to self-ruled Taiwan, and it urged the United States to halt the sales to avoid harming bilateral ties.
The sale of the weapons requested by Taiwan, including 108 General Dynamics Corp M1A2T Abrams tanks and 250 Stinger missiles, would not alter the basic military balance in the region, the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement.
DSCA notified Congress on Monday of the possible arms sale, which it said could also include mounted machine guns, ammunition, Hercules armoured vehicles for recovering inoperative tanks, heavy equipment transporters and related support.
The United States is the main arms supplier to Taiwan, which China deems a renegade province. Beijing has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control.
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said in March that Washington was responding positively to Taipei's requests for new arms sales to bolster its defences in the face of pressure from China. The United States has no formal ties with Taiwan but is bound by law to help provide it with the means to defend itself.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry confirmed it had requested those weapons and that the request was proceeding normally.
The U.S. commitment to providing Taiwan with the weapons to defend itself helps Taipei's military raise its combat abilities, consolidates the Taiwan-U.S. security partnership and ensures Taiwan's security, the ministry said last month in a statement.

You don't need to station troops if you supply the current existing military with your top shelf hardware, with a commitment to provide immediate aid if they are attacked.
How would the US respond if Russia provided Cuba with it's most modern military equipment to the extent that Cuba became a Russian military base?
The last time Russia tried that, the world was within hours of a nuclear showdown.

Taiwan used to be the government of all of China until resolution 2758 of the UN in 1971..
The USA had relations with Taiwan until 1979..
The USA doesn't want to annex Cuba by force, but China has 1500 missiles aimed at Taiwan if we make our de facto independence de jure.
The US has vital strategic interests invested in Taiwan. Keeping it safe is consistent with the policy of keeping an eye on China.
If China attacked Taiwan, the US would consider it an attack on US "interests", and respond accordingly.
We should not forget that Chine may have 1500 missiles aimed against Taiwan, but the US has thousands aimed at China.

That's different from Taiwan though. Britain handed HK back to China in 97. HK seems to be pissed off that China has been eroding freedoms that were guaranteed in the Basic Law.
What China should have done with HK was a partial retrocession of sovereignty. Let Britain maintain the economy, the political system and legal system, with no military control. The PLA could have maintained that.
Taiwanese are not interested in surrendering their independence under some phony one country two systems scheme..
The people of Hong Kong, had no choice, Britain sold them out..
Taiwanese do have a choice whether we want to be absorbed by communist China or not.....and they choose to be independent and free.
Didn't China promise the people of HK they could elect their Chief Executive by now? What happened there?
I understand China demandung loyalty from Hong Kongers, but they aint going to do it by force. The carrot works better than the stick.
Edit, I really do not give a shit what laws China imposes on Hong Kong.

I feel bad that the people of Hong Kong are not being consulted or their consent sought, but governments in Canada don't always get our consent before making major decisions that affect all our lives.

Britain sold them out..
Britain abided by the rule of law in keeping to the terms of an agreement to govern Hong Kong until 1997.
Britain attempted to negotiate a new agreement to maintain their role, but China, understandably, would have none of it.
Would Britain entertain the idea of a Chinese colony on the Isle of Wight?

Would Britain entertain the idea of a Chinese colony on the Isle of Wight?
Britain knew the legislature would not remain democratic..
They knew that China would impose a handpicked Chief Executive..
They knew China can't be trusted..
Britain didn't fight hard enough for the people of Hong Kong..
And if there were happy, prosperous people that wanted to maintain Chinese rule of law on the Isle of Wight, I think Britain would not only entertain the idea, they would insist upon it..
But, we can see from East Turkestan and Tibet, that China is anything, but a benevolent colonial power.
What would Britain have done that they didn't do?
Would you prefer to have them turn Hong Kong into a battlefield? The law of contract which they were bound by was clear; the colonial agreement expired in 1997. Their only option was to try to negotiate, which they did. And you would know better than I that you cannot negotiate with China.
Their hands were tied. The fact that Hong Kong has some semblance of self rule is because the UK was able to get China to at least agree to that.
And there is NO way any country would agree to a colony of a hostile power within swimming distance of its shores. No matter how happy the people in the colony were.

What the UK should have done was held a referendum in Hong Kong. Ask the people what they want from China before the handover. But, China would have had a shit fit at the thought of getting people's assent to changes. And they probably would not have honored the referendum results anyway. Which seems to be a British thing. :laugh3:
