QuotePaul McCartney dropped by SiriusXM'S studios on Wednesday to pay a visit to Howard Stern's radio show, and the host — a huge fan of The Beatles — had plenty of questions for Sir Paul about his days with the Fab Four and his late band mate John Lennon.

During the candid interview, McCartney confirmed it was Lennon who broke up the band at the height of their popularity.

"There was a meeting where John came in and said, 'I'm leaving the group.' And looking back on it, he'd reached that stage in his life. We all had," McCartney told Stern.

However, McCartney now realizes that Lennon's relationship with Yoko Ono — whom fans still blame for breaking up The Beatles — was the best thing for Lennon.

"Even though we thought she was intrusive, because she used to sit in on the recording sessions, and we'd never had anything like that," he added. "But looking back on it, you think, 'The guy was totally in love with her. And you've just got to respect that.' So we did. And I do."

Stern also asked McCartney his thoughts on the decades-old debates about who wrote what in the Lennon-McCartney songwriting partnership.

Its possible what you say is true.

But the band or their label hired the best studio musicians and producers in the business.

Whoever they were, they made those tracks stand out.

Even if you dont like the Beatles you should appreciate ay least their supporting cast.

I think it was they who held the tent up & made the Beatles sound as goid as they did.

The Beatles didnt play all those instruments & if they did not at the high a level.

Ie violin/strings, trumpet which was evident in songs such as Eleanor Rigby $ Northern Song

Eleanor Rigby is the only Beatles song that none of the Beatles played on.

Eric Clapton played guitar on "While My Guitar Gently Sleeps".

George Martin played piano on some tracks, as did Billy Preston. Klaus Voorman played bass on some tracks on "Revolver" and did the album art.

The Beatles revolutionised popular music. Whilst they may or may not have been the best musicians, the sum of the whole was far more than its parts.

Most modern bands accept that much of their heritage can be traced to the early 60's when the Beatles were the forefront of modern, adventurous music featuring complex melodies and chord structures.

Perhaps Freud and Joe will enlighten us as to their music credentials, so we can validate their viewpoints as expert opinion.

That's true.

The Beatles are regarded as a great band because they were pioneers of popular music, not because they possessed the talent of Eric Clapton.

Precisely. They took popular music into places it didn't know existed. Jimi Hendrix admitted when making his Axis: Bold as Love album, he listened to Sgt Peppers and tried to work out what the Beatles did to create their sound. He didn't copy...but explored and created because he heard what can happen when you push boundaries.

Eric Clapton could play guitar (not half as well as he gets credit for) but he could never have created "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".

Those who judge The Beatles on instrumental merit alone utterly fail to see the wood for the forest.

I judge them on their songs. I find them for the most part sugary popish and without depth. A production line of musical turds. The New Kids On The Block for the 60's. Garbage.

Right. "Tomorrow Never Knows", "Strawberry Fields", "I Am The Walrus", "Hey Jude", "Revolution" all "sugary poppish"

Here's you problem, shortpants.

You weren't there. You do not have the means to put them in a chronological and cultural context. As for all your "opinions", they are ill informed, poorly reasoned and designed to annoy.

Have you ever considered attempting to grow up?

Oh, no.

I'm telling you to grow up and stop posting "opinions" merely to get a reaction.

What do I care about how someone reacts to my like or dislike of any particular band or product? You're welcome to do the same.
