Title: Holy leaping koalas....
Post by: Bricktop on September 12, 2018, 08:34:31 PM
Would YOU be a baby koala...

Here's mum, perched on a branch. You may just see baby clinging to her tummy.

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1868/44645792901_f486a7deb9_z.jpg%22%3E%3CLINK_TEXT%20text=%22https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1868/446%20...%20deb9_z.jpg%22%3Ehttps://farm2.staticflickr.com/1868/44645792901_f486a7deb9_z.jpg%3C/LINK_TEXT%3E%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

But she needs to get to another branch to go to the top of the tree.

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1877/44645796391_a340e39de1_z.jpg%22%3E%3CLINK_TEXT%20text=%22https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1877/446%20...%209de1_z.jpg%22%3Ehttps://farm2.staticflickr.com/1877/44645796391_a340e39de1_z.jpg%3C/LINK_TEXT%3E%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

She lines up for a leap across to a branch around 2 metres away...note that all that holds her to the branch are her claws, and all that holds baby to her tummy are HIS tiny claws...

Point of no return...she lunges towards the branch. Baby is hanging on...

And she's up, up and away...across the gap while baby still hangs on to her.

How the hell that little critter knows she's leaping, and how tight to hang on, I could not tell. Amazing creatures.

Sorry its blurry...I did not expect her to take the leap and didn't have the camera set up correctly. But you get the idea.

Nailed it. Note that she jumped to a perfectly smooth limb, with only her powerful claws giving her enough grip to avoid falling 20 metres, baby and all.

They are like monkeys, but cuter.

Nice! That would be a sight to see!  Mainly all I see here are crows and seagulls...the squirrel population seems to be coming back.  I gave been seeing them a lot in the past year.  Would be cool to see a koala or a monkey hanging out on the tree next to my balcony.

I don't like your chances of seeing a koala, let alone mum and baby. You don't have what they eat!! Whilst we often see them, it's rare to see them with young, as they tend to hide away until baby is big enough to survive on its own.

Monkeys and koalas hang out on trees, winos and  crackheads hang out at dumpsters next to balconies. They are urban wildlife.

So many cute and beautiful animals in Australia, but a lot of them seem kinda deadly, I mean just looking at those claws gives me the shivers.

Koalas are docile, and not aggressive. However, like all wild animals, they defend themselves against aggression, real or imagined. Rule 1; never try to pick up or pat a koala in the wild, unless it is endangered by some nearby threat.

Don't startle a koala.

If you're holding one, NEVER startle it.

There claws are for climbing, not attacking...but if they do claw you, you'll know about it.

I wonder how you'd go picking up a small black bear, or puma, or wolverine?

I had one attack my tent a few years ago in the middle of nowhere on the Victoria and South Australian border. That furball kept trying to get in and took a load of swipes at me as I was making noise and stomping feet.

The only thing I can think of is that it was raining heavily at the time and I was lounging while reading a book and sipping on a soft drink near the open entrance for light. Maybe it wanted to get dry, have a sip, or both.

Heard the nasty noise and saw the blackish furry out of the corner of my eye for the first swipe, maybe a foot away. It hit the loose door screen. I threw myself to the other side not registering which animal it was and realized I hadn't brought anything blunt or sharp inside the tent. Slammed on the tent sides, yelled, and stomped then it pissed off after it's third entry attempt.

Disposed of the tent later. It was a cheapy and didn't want to have to disinfect it, plus it was bad quality and leaked at the seams.

I'd say my tent entrance was. If I were outside it probably never would have come down the tree.

Other than chipmunks we give marshmallows when we are camping, we leave wildlife to be.

I used to put grain out for deer in the winter.  But, I don't hunt/poach anymore.
