We had a visitor this morning. I was sitting at the table having breakfast when wife drew my attention to a critter in the bushland behind us.

You may also see a magpie in the shot. It's nesting season and magpies become notoriously and aggressively protective of their zones. For reasons only they can guess, they see roos as a possible adversary, and so they drive them away from their nests, which are usually 30 to 40 metres off the ground in tall trees. Roos can jump, but not THAT high.
But maggie wants that roo outta there.
Roo takes the hint and legs it...

Then stops under a tree to regroup and check out the weird humans in night attire standing at a fence, one with a big camera pointing at her.

Its a KANGA-roo!!
:oeudC:

The red is the biggest I believe.
I know of a butcher shop that sells frozen knagaroo meat. I don't know where it was raised. My guess is some place in the Southern USA.
The Red is largest, eastern grey the smallest. You may observe that the eastern grey above is not grey. But it has a grey chest and ear tufts. So its called a grey.
Wonderful shots!!

The local Independent here actually had Roo meat for sale briefly, but they stopped stocking it. I predicted sales would be dismal... Canadians aren't exactly a demographic that would take to Roo meat in any large numbers...

Cassowaries only life in the northern tropics. Thank goodness. Assholes of a bird.
Emu's come close to the city boundary, but tend to stay in bushland. We live well within the city boundary, but in a rather unusual ecological zone of natural bushland. Whilst I've not seen emus, it's not beyond the realm of possibility.
That said, emu's are wanderers, and if there were any near us, we would have likely seen them by now.
But, 20km up the road we'd probably find them.

There are several around...I just looked into the one at Harrison hot springs...most likely around the lake somewhere. But I hear Tswassin is also a good area for them.

Perhaps a nice walk around the water where they nest..
It's cheaper and you can get some exercise.
Bricktop is a sick control freak.

Have you decided on a camera yet?

Omg..no. I need time to look and research but I'm always bombarded with something else.
A guy at best buy told me some cameras come with a mirror and some are just black...he says the mirror let's in more light...I'm kind of curious about this...know anything about it? How does it affect quality in the shot?
Right now I have 5 teenagers in my house and some drama going on...

The photographic industry is turning more and more to mirrorless cameras.
As to image quality, they are not superior to mirrored DSLR's. Both give excellent results. The advantage of mirrorless is their relatively small size. I've just bought an Olympus mirrorless to compliment my Nikon DSLR. Its brilliant.

Seeing deer inside city limits is no longer rare in Canada. Are kangaroos in cities not unusual in Australia?
They are often seen in the outer suburbs which are typically surrounded by bushland. Occasionally one may wander too far into the metropolitan area.
Roos and wallabies have really started taking Victoria back. They love munching along nature strips, road divides, and residential lawns, and zero fear of people or vehicles.

And get hit by cars.
Yep....
too sad really. fantastic animals.
They seem to be evolving. The metropolitan roos and wallabies don't seem to get themselves hit by vehicles like years ago. They hold their ground and don't budge from their roadside or centre of the road foraging, unless some a-hole motorist hits the horn and they panic.
The fact that hitting a roo causes thousands of dollars damage to one's motor vehicle also encourages motorists to slow down and evade where possible.
They're a solid beast.

I guess so, seeing photos of what deer can do to a car.

I know at least ten people who have had vehicles destroyed when they hit a deer on a highway..
An elk or moose can kill the driver and passengers of a car on impact with one of those massive animals.
I drove in my state for 9 hours on my way to a place called Munglinup...There is this very nasty stretch of road that is dead straight for a hundred miles and your foot gets heavier and heavier...it's horrible. It's called The LakeGrace-Newdegate Road. This was back in the mid-late 80s somewhere. The was the biggest dead boomer I'd ever seen on the side of the road. He must have been a decent 7' tall living... massive broad shoulders. I was really upset seeing that. Poor thing, to have lived for so long only to end up road kill.
For the non Australians here, a Boomer is an adult male kangaroo.
