https://www.breitbart.com/sports/2018/06/05/flashback-media-attacked-conservative-hockey-player-who-snubbed-obama-white-house-visit/
The Associated Press
5 June 2018
Back in 2012, the Boston Bruins were invited to Barack Obama's White House to celebrate the team's Stanley Cup win. However, goalie Tim Thomas decided that he would not make the trip because he didn't approve of how powerful and cumbersome the federal government had become.
At the time, Thomas took to his Facebook page to explain his reasons: "I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People."
Thomas went on to say that because he is a "free citizen" he did not visit the White House with his team adding that his decision was not about any particular party or politician. In fact, the player blamed both parties equally for the growth of big government and the obviation of the U.S. Constitution.
But his explanation was not good enough for Sports Illustrated. The venerable sports magazine said the player was flat-out wrong not to visit Obama's White House and that a visit with the president of the United States was the "wrong place and time" to make such statements.
"Thomas was wrong not because he holds those particular views on the government. He is certainly entitled to them. That is his legal right — one of the things that is truly great about this country. Not every nation is so fortunate," wrote the magazine's Stu Hackel. "But Thomas went wrong when he decided to use this particular time and place to exercise his right."
Hackel went on to insist that the team's visit to the White House was not the time for players to act as individuals because the event was for the team, not any particular player. Not only that, but it was "disrespecting" the whole country.
"Tim Thomas may think he's protesting what he sees as some sort of government wrongdoing," the haughty Hackel wrote. "But — whether he realizes it or not — he's really being disrespectful to the people of the United States. That's who he snubbed here."
Hackel continued:
His team, the Boston Bruins, are what this event was all about. They are the object of the celebration — not the government, not the president, not even the Constitution. This was all about the Boston Bruins being acknowledged as the best team in hockey.
And if there's one thing that makes a hockey team great, it's unity, that none of the individuals put themselves ahead of the team. This is one the most fundamental principles in the sport. In fact, putting yourself ahead of the team is one of the worst things a hockey player can do. It violates that fundamental principle.
And that's exactly what Tim Thomas — who wants to paint himself as a man of principle — did. He put himself above his team.
Hackel continued for several more paragraphs before ending with a body slam to the hockey player.
"A segment of fans and media observers, who likely agree with Tim Thomas's politics or don't really understand the notion of principle, have now hailed him as some sort of righteous figure. He's not," Hackel concluded. "There's nothing heroic in what he did. He trampled on the only principle that really matters here, the one that got him invited to the White House in the first place. He misguidedly and unprofessionally turned his back on the group that propelled him into public prominence and the sport that has made him wealthy. Where's the principle in that?"
But Hackel wasn't alone in his condemnation of the goalie. Others piled on.
Joe McDonald of ESPN also attacked Thomas: "Tim Thomas put himself above the team," McDonald cried. He added that Thomas picked the wrong time to make a statement and continued saying, "When the president of the United States invites you and all your teammates to the White House to honor your Stanley Cup championship, you go and represent the team. On Monday, Thomas instead chose to represent himself."
James Hardie from Bleacher Report then added his two cents: "If Thomas was a real man, he would have gone to the Boston Bruins management and ownership, returned the money from his contract and quit the balance of it by retiring—so he could exercise his rights as a free citizen."
The Boston Globe's Kevin Paul Dupont also hammered the goalie: "Yesterday was not about politics and government until Thomas made it about politics and government. The day, long set on the calendar was a day when the Boston Bruins were asked to visit Pennsylvania Avenue to celebrate what they did as a team last season. It was their day in the national spotlight until Thomas didn't show, and then the focal point became, much the way it would be in a hockey game, on the guy who was no longer standing in goal."
DuPont exclaimed that Thomas was "Shabby. Immature. Unprofessional. Self-centered. Bush league."
There were many more, of course, but these excerpts tend to show the hypocrisy of the liberal sports media that is now — nearly universally — supporting the Philadelphia Eagles for not going to the White House.
I disagreed with the actions of Tim Thomas and I disagree with the actions of many professional athletes today..
Sports should be neutral.

It was a great game! However, they lost to the Bruins yesterday.
There is no battle for Alberta. Connor McDavid, Captain of the Edmonton Oilers is suspended for two games for headshot on Nick Leddy of the New York Islanders. It will not make a difference this season, however. The Oilers are in 27th place in the league, close to last place. Only the top 16 teams will make it to the playoffs.
The Calgary Flames, on the other hand, remain in 2nd place in the league. Hot Hot Hot Flames.

The Washington Capitals intend to visit the Trump White House to celebrate their Stanley Cup championship. The Caps and the Trump administration are discussing when, not if, that visit will occur.
"There's been some reach out from the White House and this will be a team decision, I've said that from Day One," Leonsis said on January 31. "They're in discussions right now but I think that they will have an answer to that soon. Again, it's our players and coaching staff that will decide and whatever they decide I think that the team would support that."
Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov are two players eager to make the trip and they recently spoke about it with Sport-Express's Igor Rabiner.
"Of course I'll go there," Ovechkin said. "The opportunity to visit the White House is very pleasant."
Kuznetsov agreed he'd go too. "I always thought that sport is outside of politics," he said. "Everybody needs to take care of their own business. We are simple people, our business is to play hockey, not to declare how to invest the money or where and how to build a wall. And you have to respect the people. It's not like some kind of Vasya Pupkin [Russian version of Joe Schmo] is inviting you to come by to ChTZ and have a drink with him. I work in the country, and I have to respect its traditions. If I don't show up, it would be disrespectful."
Ovechkin had a wish list of what he'd like to accomplish at the White House.
"I would chat with [President Trump] for a little, take a photo." He began to smile. Then "ask when he's going to fix the relationship with Russia."
Popular in both America and Russia, Ovechkin was asked if there was something he could do to bring the two countries closer together. The Capitals captain has a friendly relationship with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
"I'm away from politics," Ovechkin said. "Politics is a separate topic. For me, the most important thing is world peace and health for all people."
Meanwhile, not all Capitals players are enthusiastic about going to the White House. Brett Connolly and Devante Smith-Pelly have pledged not to go. Brooks Orpik called the visit a "sensitive issue."
"The things that [Donald Trump] spews are straight-up racist and sexist," Smith-Pelly said. "I already have my mind made up."
"For me, I just don't think it's the right thing to do," Connolly said. "Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think there'll be a few guys not going, too. Like I said, it has nothing to do with politics, it's about what's right and wrong, and we'll leave it at that."
Kuznetsov was supportive of teammates who choose not to attend.
"Every player has his own mentality, his own upbringing, and if somebody for whatever reason decides not to go, I will under no circumstances condemn them," Kuznetsov said. "It is their right."
But despite all this talk in the media about the visit happening soon, Kuznetsov said that behind the scenes, the planning is "so far – quiet."
"At the end of the last year, and the beginning of this year, there was a shutdown of the US government," Kuznetsov said. "Maybe that is why there still has been no [White House] visit."
Alexander Ovechkin the diplomat.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2019/03/19/washington-capitals-celebrate-stanley-cup-victory-white-house-monday/?utm_term=.c009eba97066
NEWARK — The Washington Capitals will join President Trump on Monday to celebrate their 2018 Stanley Cup victory at the White House, according to a team spokesman. The visit will come nearly 10 months after the team won its first championship in franchise history, and the event is expected to be more low-key than some in the past, though plans are still being finalized.
The Capitals will be the first Washington professional team to be honored at the White House since D.C. United in 1997. Visiting the White House has long been a tradition for many championship college and professional teams, but it has been mixed with some controversy during Trump's presidency. In the week after they won the Stanley Cup, most Capitals players said they would visit the White House. Russian captain Alex Ovechkin confirmed that he will attend after the team's 4-1 win at the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.
"We just found out today, so I don't know what to say," he said. "I'm just excited. It's nice."
Said Swedish center Nicklas Backstrom: "It will be fun. It's exciting, I think, and every time you get an invitation from the president and being at the White House, it's going to be a great experience. ... I feel like it's always up to whoever wants to go, but we got the invitation, and it's been a tradition, I think, for many years. We're not going to mix politics with sports. It's because we won last year; that's why we're there. Yeah, it'll be a cool experience, I think."
Forward Devante Smith-Pelly, who is black and Canadian, previously said he would not want to be part of a White House ceremony because "the things that [Trump] spews are straight-up racist and sexist," he told Canada's Postmedia.
Smith-Pelly was waived in February and sent down to the American Hockey League in a salary cap-clearing move so he is no longer with the Capitals, but all members of the 2018 team are invited and will have the option to attend or decline. Players and coaches new to the team this season will not be part of the visit.
Forward Brett Connolly joined Smith-Pelly last year in saying he would also skip a White House visit, and he stood by that decision when asked Tuesday night, referencing his support for Smith-Pelly.
"I respectfully decline," said Connolly, who is Canadian. "That's all I'll say about it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. It's obviously a big deal, and it gains a lot of attention. I've been in full support of an old teammate that I'm really good friends with who I agreed with and a guy who will be back here, I'm sure, at the end of the year. That's all I'll say."
Trump canceled the 2018 Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles' visit to the White House after some players said they would skip the ceremony to protest the president and his rhetoric. When the Golden State Warriors won the 2017 NBA championship, multiple players, including superstar guard Stephen Curry, said they were not in favor of a visit to the White House. They were later disinvited by Trump. The Warriors won another title last year and, rather than visit the White House during their trip to Washington in late January, they met with former president Barack Obama. The team visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture during its trip to Washington the previous February.
The Pittsburgh Penguins visited the White House after both their 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup wins. In 2012, then-Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas, an American, skipped the team's White House ceremony, citing his political and ideological differences with the Obama administration. The Capitals went down to the wire with this visit, discussing dates earlier in the season to no avail because of scheduling conflicts.
Clemson, winner of the College Football Playoff, and North Dakota State, seven-time winner of the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision, are the most recent teams to visit the White House, and both were served a fast-food spread.
"It's another chance to recognize the special run that we had last year," Capitals forward Tom Wilson said Tuesday. "Anytime the group gets together and gets to see the Cup and be around it, it is awesome. We'll take it in stride and see where it goes here and look forward to celebrating that one whenever we can."

In the photo above, my oldest son and I were wearing our championship red t-shirts and we were somewhere to the left mixed with the crowd waving our hands and screaming.
Tonight, the puck drops at 7 p.m. Eastern at Capital One Arena. The Caps host the Tampa Bay Lightning. This will be a tough match.

It's refreshing to see no players used this to make some political gesture..
They showed true sportsmanship.
That is actually not entirely accurate, Fash. Three Canadian players did not want to attend because of political reasons. I was very disappointed in Braden Holtby, the goal tender. He's from Llyodminster, Alberta. He and Devante Smith-Pelly chose to opt out of attending the White House. Smith-Pelly hails from Scarborough, Toronto. Add to that Brett Connolly who hails from Campbell River, BC. However, not all Canadian players refused to attend. Tom Wilson, the team's fiery goal-scoring goon comes from Toronto. He was at the White House visit.
More here: http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/26357829/stanley-cup-winning-capitals-visit-white-house
Apart from these three who chose not to attend, I think the rest have my respect because they are not letting politics seep into sports. It should never.
The Calgary Flames will play the Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the playoffs....go Flames go.

It's two to one for Colorado at the end of the first.
Calgary has been eliminated after losing five to one to Colorado..
Winnipeg faces elimination tonight.
St Louis defeated Winnipeg three to two to eliminate the Jets..
The Toronto Maple Leafs are the sole Canadian team still in playoff contention.
Boston beat Toronto four to two to force a game seven.
I will be very disappointed if the Caps lose but they really should have eliminated the Hurricanes while they were ahead. Oh well. Such is life. You cannot always win.

I know what you mean Azhya..
Calgary's performance was very disappointing.
The only Canadian team left, the Maple Leafs, are hanging by a thread.
Toronto is eliminated. No Canadian teams are going to the Stanley Cup championship.

A hungry Hurricanes could eliminate the Caps but it remains to be seen, of course. The Canes captain is now Justin Williams, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, with the Canes in 2006 and twice with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012 and 2014 so he is experienced. The Caps, of course, are hungry to get their back-to-back wins but that might not be such an easy thing to accomplish but they have the roster for it. We shall see what tomorrow brings or maybe I won't watch. I get too emotional. Haha.
The officiating in a number of these playoff games recently have drawn criticism. I dread the moment the Caps could be winning tonight's game but lose it to bad officiating. I am going to be a mad woman tonight, I think. Sigh.
I can already predict my blood pressure will be going off the rails tonight. :swoon:

Do you think Carolina will win the Stanley Cup Azhya?
As the Stanley Cup playoffs are unpredictable, I can only say that the Hurricanes appear dominant but they have not faced the others yet. It is the fight for the Stanley Cup so we will see more hunger in the way the game is played from here on.
Like my son, I too detest Brad Marchand with a passion. Look at his detestable hit on Scott Harrington here of the Columbus Blue jackassets. Too bad the Bruins eliminated them. Boston advances to face the Hurricanes.

That should fire up the two Fins in the Boston Bruins for tomorrow's first round of the final Stanley Cup championship against the St. Louis Blues. Defenseman Urho Vaakanainen, and goalie Tuukka Rask.
I have a disdain for Boston and their fans so I am hoping St. Louis will win but all the teams I rooted for this time have lost so maybe the Blues might not make it also. We'll see.

Boston scored four unanswered goals to beat St Louis in game one, four to two.
As I stated earlier in the thread, I'll always root for the Blues over Boston. I'm not an overt StL fan because I find their fans deplorable, but two of my siblings are lifelong fans and I've never liked the Bruins.
Even so, I tuned in to the game last night when the score was 2-2, watched maybe 2 minutes, sighed and told my wife "The Blues are totally losing," and turned it off.
I always keep the faith alive until the last few seconds. Haha! I love a great game of hockey and playoff hockey games are the best! I want St. Louis to beat Boston badly. They last faced off like this in 1970. I'm always rooting for the underdog. The Bruins won the Stanley Cup last in 2011 but have won many times in the past. They were the team to beat. St. Louis has never won. I would love for them to win it this time.

The NHL is fixed Fashionista.
A Canadian team will never win the Stanley Cup as long as Gary Bettman is President
Bettman is to the NHL what Vladimir Putin is to Russia.
A virtual dictator who is making the NHL into a sad joke.
& running the game into th ground.
Everything you see has already been determined
nNHL cimmisiober Gary Bettman is nothing but a sleazy fixer.
The only hockey I believe in & ever bother with now are International hockey championships played on Olympic sized ice.

Yes, they did...three to two in overtime.
I am so happy for the Blues. I hope they dominate in the next three games and win it for St. Louis. That would be historic, similar with the Caps.
Boston has two game to one lead after beating St Louis seven to two.
I think the "blues" will ultimately demonstrate that they were aptly named
In Game 5, the Blues made Boston look like just one more bunch of losers.
Even if the Bruins recover their poise and sweep the last 2 games for the Cup, StL fans have something to be proud of. I expect the "celebrations" will be huge, either way.
