The Flea Trap / Genital Mutilator Faces Life
April 13, 2017, 10:17:12 PM
QuoteDetroit doctor Jumana Nagarwala faces life in jail

A doctor in the US city of Detroit has been charged with carrying out female genital mutilation (FGM) on young girls in what is believed to be the first case of its kind in the country.

Prosecutors said Jumana Nagarwala had been performing the practice on girls aged between six and eight for 12 years. She was investigated after the authorities received a tip-off. If found guilty, she faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

In a voluntary interview with investigators earlier this week Dr Nagarwala denied being involved in any such procedure, local media reported. But prosecutors said she had performed "horrifying acts of brutality on the most vulnerable victims". Some travelled to her practise from outside the state of Michigan and were told not to talk about the procedure, they added.

Dr Nagarwala appeared in a federal court in Detroit and was remanded in custody.

"Female genital mutilation constitutes a particularly brutal form of violence against women and girls. It is also a serious federal felony in the United States," acting US attorney Daniel Lemisch said.

"The practice has no place in modern society and those who perform FGM on minors will be held accountable under federal law."

The first recorded case of FGM in the US was in 2006, when an Ethiopian immigrant was jailed for 10 years for aggravated battery and cruelty to children for mutilating his two-year-old daughter five years earlier with a pair of scissors.

In 2012 the US authorities said more than 500,000 women and girls in the country had either been subjected to FGM or were at risk of it. About 200 million girls and women around the world have suffered some form of FGM, the UN says, with half living in Egypt, Ethiopia and Indonesia, the UN says.

I could get behind life in prison for this doctor.  I also wouldn't mind the parents of each one of these girls to be charged criminally as well.

Could Canada Ban the Burka?

I got into a debate the other day about the burka and the potential for it to be banned in Canada.  For many, this issue is black and white but for me, it is difficult to reconcile based on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom.

One of our charter rights is freedom of religion.  Many folks from various religious backgrounds in Canada are free to wear their respective religious garb in public without issue.  Some religious groups have fought laws for the right to wear religious items such as Sikhs being able to forgo wearing helmets while riding motorcycles because of their turbans.

That said, many of us see the Islamic religious garment the burka as an unacceptable covering of women and a sign of oppression.  It is not a garment we readily accept in our society as it covers the face.

The legal philosophical question around banning the burka remains outside of our personal comfort and with our first Charter right which states:

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.

What limits can we demonstrably justify in a free and democratic society for taking away a person's clothing choice, especially in a religious context?

Has anyone seen or met any famous people?

I saw Angelina Jolie filming Life or Something Like It in downtown Vancouver.  She was wearing a stupid looking blond wig. I was watching her and I accidentally ran into Tony Shalhoub who I thought was a bum.  He was very gracious about it.

QuoteOn May 30, a Facebook user from Quebec posted a photo showing Arabic writing on a London patrol car. The post included the statement: "So it starts. The little toes in the door already." The poster also asks the question: "Why is this acceptable?"

The writer also questioned why "police" is not spelled out in French, even though both French and English spell the word exactly the same.

Now police in London, Ont., are being forced to defend decals on patrol cars that have the word "police" written in a number of different languages, including Arabic, which is the one that has angered some people.

Although the decals have been on London Police Service cruisers for at least nine years, a recent Facebook post about Arabic writing on patrol car has resulted in many angry phone calls from Americans upset over the apparent "Islamization of Canada." The post was picked up by a conservative American blog site that also published the phone number for London police.

"Headquarters has been getting calls like crazy," Const. Sandasha Bough said. "Some of them are being patched up to me and people are just screaming at me." Bough couldn't provide specifics on how many calls have come in, but said they've remained steady throughout the day Friday.

The decals were added to police cars in 2009 to represent many of the city's various ethnic groups, but the Arabic one is the only one to draw criticism. Using figures from Statistics Canada, officials selected the most frequently used languages for the stickers, including Vietnamese, Chinese, Persian and Polish. There are plans to include Spanish stickers in the future. "It was a means of being inclusive of the diverse members within the city of London," Bough told CBC News.

The Facebook post on the decals was shared nearly 18,000 times and liked nearly 2,000 times.

London police received some calls after the post originally appeared, Bough said, but calls intensified after it was re-posted to the U.S. blog site.

"Canadians see this as an example of favouritism and inconsistent with French-Canadian values," according to the blog run by an individual identified as Dr. Rich Swier. "This is yet another example of the Islamization of Canada."

The writer suggests people complain and recommended fellow Americans voice their displeasure.

Why do Americans give a shit about what's written on our police cars?

And don't wonder what this fear monger shit buys us.

Spain appoints SEX TSAR to encourage couples to have more nookie to boost country's 'catastrophically' low birth rate

Spain has appointed a 'sex tsar' to help boost the country's "catastrophically low" birth rate .

Young couples have reportedly blamed being "too tired after a full day at work" and "late nights" for the decrease.

So, faced with a rapidly declining population, the Senado de Espana has tasked demographic expert Edelmira Barreira with sorting out the problem.

The move comes after the country reported a higher number of deaths than births for the first time in 2015.

QuoteNASA Telescope Reveals Largest Batch of Earth-Size, Habitable-Zone Planets Around Single Star

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has revealed the first known system of seven Earth-size planets around a single star. Three of these planets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water.

The discovery sets a new record for greatest number of habitable-zone planets found around a single star outside our solar system. All of these seven planets could have liquid water – key to life as we know it – under the right atmospheric conditions, but the chances are highest with the three in the habitable zone.

"This discovery could be a significant piece in the puzzle of finding habitable environments, places that are conducive to life," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the agency's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. "Answering the question 'are we alone' is a top science priority and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal."

I have no doubt we are not the only life in this universe but I wonder if we will actually be able to find any in our lifetimes.

The Flea Trap / Opt Out of the Organ Harvest
February 02, 2017, 11:40:56 PM
QuoteAll French citizens are now organ donors unless they opt out

Every citizen in France has automatically become an organ donor unless they decide to opt out, due to a significant change in the law.

The new rules, which came into effect on 1 January, sees France's policy align with a number of European countries such as Spain and Austria, where "presumed consent" means anyone can become a donor of organs and tissues when they die unless they specifically choose not to.

In France, people will now need to sign up to a new National Rejection Register to ensure they do not become organ donors, which medical teams will check at the time of death before considering organ or tissue removal. A total of 150,000 people have already signed up to the register, according to the Guardian.

I think this is a great idea.  It would really solve the problem of lack of organ donation.

I've been watching Life Below Zero about people who live in very remote parts of Alaska.  Many of them have to cut down trees to build and get firewood.  I've heard them talk about "widow maker" a lot but I'm not really sure what it is or what makes it so dangerous.  I assume you've come across your fair share so I thought I'd ask an expert - what's the deal with the "widow maker"?

:)
