March 22, 2023, 03:24:27 PMApparently, turtles can become fathers well into old age. That's what happened recently with a 90-year-old radiated tortoise at the Houston Zoo.
Mr. Pickles has become the father of three hatchlings after a surprise egg-laying. A zoo resident for 36 years, Mr. Pickles is the oldest animal there and the newest dad.
According to a statement from the zoo, a herpetology keeper happened upon Mrs. Pickles, the companion of Mr. Pickles, as she was laying eggs at closing time.
Houston's soil isn't friendly to the Madagascar tortoises, so the zoo's animal care team quickly uncovered the eggs and got them to safety.
"It's unlikely the eggs would have hatched on their own if the keeper hadn't been in the right place at the right time," the zoo said in a press release.
Mr. and Mrs. Pickles have been together since the new mom's arrival in 1996, the zoo said. They have had only one other little Pickle, and that was in 1997.

The Hershey Co. said Tuesday that Reese's Plant Based Peanut Butter Cups, which go on sale this month, will be its first vegan chocolates sold nationally. A second plant-based offering, Hershey's Plant Based Extra Creamy with Almonds and Sea Salt, will follow in April.
The chocolates are made with oats instead of milk, Hershey said.
Hershey has experimented with vegan chocolate before. It sold an oat-based chocolate bar called Oat Made in some test markets starting in 2021. But the new products will be the first sold throughout the U.S. under the "Plant Based" label.
Hershey said consumers want choice and are looking for products they consider healthier or with fewer ingredients, including reduced sugar and plant-based options. Hershey also introduced an organic version of Reese's Cups in February 2021.
Hershey said it developed plant-based versions of Reese's Cups and Hershey bars, some of its most popular products, because there's a dearth of mainstream plant-based chocolates in the U.S. market.

November 23, 2022, 10:02:08 AMThe cashew nut is a seed harvested from the cashew tree. The tree originated in Northeastern Brazil. However, it is now widely grown in tropical climates for its cashew apples and nuts.
With leathery leaves arranged spirally, the evergreen cashew tree grows as tall as 32 feet high and often has an irregularly shaped trunk. The flowers are small, starting out pale green then turning reddish, with each one having five slender, acute petals.
The largest cashew tree in the world covers about 81,000 sq. ft. and is located in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.
Cashew Facts
The cashew tree has a fruit called the "cashew apple." Its fragile skin makes it unsuitable for transport.
Latin Americans make a fruit drink from the cashew apple.
The Cashew causes fewer allergic reactions than other nuts or peanuts.
Although native to northeast Brazil, the Portuguese took the cashew plant to Goa, India, between 1560 and 1565. From Goa, it spread throughout Southeast Asia and, eventually, Africa.
We often see peanuts, pecans, walnuts, and other nuts sold in the shell. Due to the toxic nature of the cashew nut's shell, this is not possible.
Speaking of the shell, the Cashew is not a true nut. They do not develop a hard wall around the seed as hazelnuts or walnuts do. Cashews instead have a lining around the seed that is filled with a caustic fluid.
This nut is an excellent source of antioxidants. It's also a source of dietary trace minerals: copper, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorous.
Cashew oil is a dark yellow oil for cooking or salad dressing pressed from cashew nuts.
Many parts of the plant are used for medicinal purposes.

After three months since Powerball last produced a winner, a winning ticket has been sold, ending a streak of over 40 drawings without a winner.
The jackpot for the early Tuesday drawing was worth $2.04 billion, the largest in U.S. history. The previous largest U.S. lottery jackpot was the Jan. 13, 2016 Powerball drawing, which was worth $1.586 billion.
The lottery could not hold its Monday evening drawing on time, meaning the numbers from last night's game were released this morning. Powerball partners with 48 different state and territorial lotteries, and according to officials, one participating lottery needed more time to process its sales and play data.
"Powerball has stringent security requirements to protect the integrity of the game and remains committed to holding a drawing that gives all players a fair chance to win," Powerball officials said in a statement.
The California Lottery said the winning ticket was sold at Joe's Service Center in Altadena in the Los Angeles area.
