US rock 'n' roll star Don Everly of The Everly Brothers dies aged 84

">

Don Everly, the last surviving member of the rock 'n' roll duo The Everly Brothers, has died at the age of 84.

A family spokesperson confirmed Everly's death to the Los Angeles Times, but did not disclose the cause.

Everly and his brother, Phil, had hits worldwide in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including Bye Bye Love and All I Have To Do Is Dream.

They were known for their close harmonies and influenced bands such as The Beatles.

"Don lived by what he felt in his heart. Don expressed his appreciation for the ability to live his dreams... with his soulmate and wife, Adela, and sharing the music that made him an Everly Brother," a statement said.

Tom T. Hall, the singer-songwriter who composed "Harper Valley P.T.A." and sang about life's simple joys as country music's consummate blue collar bard, has died. He was 85.

I always liked that song -

President Joe Biden's administration is reportedly charging American citizens upwards of $2,000 to board evacuation flights out of Afghanistan's only operational airport.

Those that make their way through armed Taliban checkpoints and into the airport could then be charged upwards of $2,000 from the State Department to board evacuation flights, sources on the ground told Politico. Non-citizens are being charged even higher sums, the outlet reported Thursday.

Politico reported that the State Department did not deny that it was seeking payments from Americans seeking to flee the country following the Taliban's swift takeover.

"U.S. law requires that evacuation assistance to private U.S. citizens or third country nationals be provided 'on a reimbursable basis to the maximum extent practicable.' The situation is extremely fluid, and we are working to overcome obstacles as they arise," a State Department spokesperson told Politico.

Up to 15,000 American citizens remained in Afghanistan as of Tuesday, NBC News reported.

COVID lockdowns are around the corner again. More than half of California is yet again under mask mandates.

China Admits Taliban Ties Aimed at Getting Afghanistan's $3 Trillion in Rare Earths

In the course of hectoring the United States for its "bungled and embarrassing withdraw from Afghanistan" on Thursday, China's state-run Global Times admitted Beijing has a rapacious interest in Afghanistan's vast rare-earths mineral resources and snarled it was none of America's business if China makes deals with the Taliban to get what it wants.

Joe Biden is unfit for to carry out the duties of president. It's time invoke the 25th amendment.

I would agree but then we would end up with this -

Sudoku creator Maki Kaji, whose life's work was spreading the joy of puzzles, has died at age 69 of cancer.

Known as the "Godfather of Sudoku," Kaji created the numbers puzzle to be easy for children and others who didn't want to think too hard.

He founded his puzzle company, Nikoli Co., in 1983 and created the game around the same time.

Sudoku became a global hit two decades later after a fan pitched it to the British newspaper The Times.

His company said Kaji traveled to more than 30 countries spreading his enjoyment of puzzles.

Sudoku championships have drawn millions of players and his company has provided more original puzzles to media companies in Japan and abroad.

Sorry, didn't mean to upset you. It just seems strange that Arnold said that while people elsewhere are so desperate for freedom they'll hang onto a plane as it's taking off. We should be thankful as hell for our freedoms and be sure nobody ever takes them away.

China is already recognizing the Taliban government.

Yup, they're after the resources -

Afghanistan is believed to have large deposits of gold, iron, copper, zinc, lithium and other rare earth metals, valued at over $1 trillion. "Afghanistan may hold 60 million metric tons of copper, 2.2 billion tons of iron ore, 1.4 million tons of rare earth elements (REEs) such as lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, and veins of aluminium, gold, silver, zinc, mercury..." an analysis in The Diplomat in 2020 said.

Various rare earth elements are used for making key components of phones, cameras, computer disks, TVs and other equipment. They also have applications in clean energy and defense industries.

Afghanistan has vast reserves of lithium in provinces such as Ghazni, Herat and Nimroz. Lithium is a key component in building the lithium-ion batteries that power everything from mobile phones to electric vehicles to new generations of submarines. A Bloomberg New Energy Finance Limited report in 2020 noted China led the world's lithium-ion battery supply chain market, given its dominance of raw material mining and refining.

China potentially getting control of untapped deposits of lithium and rare earths in Afghanistan would prove a major advantage for Beijing in its evolving competition with the US and Europe for resources. In 2019, the US imported 80 per cent of its rare earth minerals from China, while the EU states got 98 per cent of these materials from China.
