"If someone says, 'I left my country because I can't make a living,' [or] 'It's hard to take care of my family' — that's what we call an economic migrant."



Border Patrol would be given one to three days for "detailed, fair and accurate interviews" with migrant families. If the families are fearful of returning to their home countries, they would be deported, the newspaper reported.



If a family is fearful, the next step would be for asylum officers to conduct a credible-fear interview. The officers would have nine days after the family is caught to do so. After that, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice would have six days to determine a ruling on the case, according to the report.



Republican Sens. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Rob Portman of Ohio, James Lankford of Oklahoma, John Barrasso and Michael Enzi of Wyoming, and John Cornyn of Texas signed the letter. Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Doug Jones of Alabama signed the letter as well.

Nobody should be allowed to asylum shop. If an asylum seeker is in Mexico, that is where they should seek asylum. Having said that, Hondurans and Guatemalans are not legitimate refugees.

The United States can learn a lot from the refugee camps on the border of Turkey and Syria. Turkey has done well on this.



The refugees live in a refugee camp where there are homes, grocery stores, schools, hospitals, all the basic things a community needs.



Something like that can be done in the US southern border. They can partner with Mexico and come up with a "Refugee City" where those who want to enter the US could live while waiting for their papers to be approved.

New Rules Would Deny Immigrants Who Cannot Show Proof They Can Support Themselves



U.S. President Donald Trump's administration unveiled a sweeping rule on Monday that some experts say could cut legal immigration in half by denying visas and permanent residency to hundreds of thousands of people for being too poor.



The long-anticipated rule, pushed by Trump's leading aide on immigration, Stephen Miller, takes effect Oct. 15. It would reject applicants for temporary or permanent visas if they fail to meet high enough income standards or if they receive public assistance such as welfare, food stamps, public housing or Medicaid.



"The Trump administration is trying to bypass Congress and implement its own merit based-immigration system. It's really a backdoor way of prohibiting low-income people from immigrating," said Charles Wheeler of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network Inc.



The rule is part of Republican Trump's efforts to curb both legal and illegal immigration, an issue he has made a cornerstone of his presidency.



After the rule was announced, the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) said it would file a lawsuit to stop it from taking effect. The group's executive director said the rule was racially motivated. The state attorneys general of California and New York threatened to sue.



The 837-page rule, seeking to target those who could become "public charges" in the United States, could be the most drastic of all the Trump administration's policies targeting the legal immigration system, experts have said. It could deny visas to people for not making enough money or who are drawing public benefits.



The government estimates the status of 382,000 immigrants could immediately be reviewed on those grounds. Immigrant advocates fear the real number could be much higher, especially if the rule is extended to the millions of people who apply for U.S. visas at American consulates around the world.



The State Department already changed its foreign affairs manual in January 2018 to give diplomats wider discretion in deciding visa denials on public charge grounds.

11-Year-Old Allegedly Raped Repeatedly By Two Illegal Immigrants



Two illegal immigrants have been charged with second degree rape of the same 11-year-old girl in Maryland.



Montgomery County Police arrested Mauricio Barrera-Navidad, 29, of Damascus, Maryland, and Carlos Palacios-Amaya, 28, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, for allegedly raping the same under-aged girl on multiple occasions, WJLA reports.



Montgomery County District Court Judge Sherri Koch granted Barrera-Navidad, an El Salvadorian national, a $100,000 bond, though he remains incarcerated while awaiting trial. Palacios-Amaya, also an El Salvadorian national and charged with four rape counts, was denied bond by Montgomery County District Court Judge Eric Nee.



ICE has confirmed both suspects are present in the United States illegally. Palacios-Amaya had been previously deported in 2014 and reentered the U.S. at an unknown time, according to ICE.
