There was a brief moment where it seemed like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau understood the magnitude of what he had done. That was the very night the first blackface story broke, when Trudeau stood in front of the cameras on his airplane and offered an apology and denounced his own past actions as racist.

The question would then be up to voters for them to determine whether they forgive him or not. That was before things got worse. Much worse.

We have since learned there were a couple of other instances of blackface. And maybe more, as Trudeau has declined to clarify.

His attitude in response, as he's been dogged by reporters and protesters, has also changed. He's become somewhat defiant. He's no longer accepting total blame. He's now trying to shirk responsibility by blaming society.

Trudeau was asked for more specifics about his blackface antics by a reporter on Sunday and this was his response: "I think there are a lot of Canadians through the past days who are reflecting on and learning more about the racist history of blackface. And that is something that certainly is something that we are all talking about and I am certainly reflecting on deeply."

This answer doesn't just show contempt for the media and public in its shameless refusal to dodge the question and offer up real answers. It also shows contempt for the public by trying to force them to shoulder the blame.

Here the PM is suggesting that many Canadians did not know blackface was wrong. He's lumping us all in with him and suggesting that he's provided a learning opportunity for the nation.

rubbish. Trudeau wore blackface. Full stop. This is not about "us" or "we" or any sort of national conversation.

The 1990s was not the age of segregation, some sort of pre-civil rights era, where regular citizens were ignorant of race relations. It's an insult to anyone in their 30s and older to suggest that they did not know blackface was socially unacceptable at the time.

Trudeau needs to shoulder the blame himself and leave everyone else out of it.

What Trudeau should have said.

By former Liberal strategist Warren Kinsella

My fellow Liberals, my fellow Canadians. Last week, I spoke about the scandal that has hit my campaign. I didn't do it right, so I'm now going to try again.

First things first: Over and over, I used the wrong pronoun. I talked about how "we," as a country, need to do better. How "we" need to be less racist.

I got that wrong. I shouldn't have said "we." I should have said "I." Because I — not we — was the one who smeared stuff all over my face and my body and mocked black people.

It was I — not we — who was racist. Me. Repeatedly — as a high school student in Montreal, and then as a teacher of high school students in Vancouver.

When I was 30 years old. When I was a man, not a boy. When I was supposed to know better. In the video that came out, everyone focused on the blackface-style racism, and they should have. But they missed something, maybe because the video was grainy. In it, I'm wearing a T-shirt with bananas on the front. I've stuffed something down the front of my jeans. And I jump around like an ape. I did all of that to communicate something that I'm amazed so many of you missed. I did it to suggest that blacks are apes. Which was the worst kind of racism.

Oh, in case you are wondering if I did blackface more than those three times, the answer is yes: I did. I repeatedly, and gleefully, acted like a racist. I can't remember every detail because I was wasted.

The people who work for me have all forgiven me, of course. What do you expect? When the boss asks people for forgiveness, they will always give it.

But I must say that Liberal MPS of colour — Navdeep Bains, Omar Alghabra, Greg Fergus — surprised even me with how speedily they pronounced me without sin. I think we all know that if Andrew Scheer had done blackface on Halloween at the age of five, Navdeep, Omar and Greg would be convening a Human Rights Tribunal right now to have Scheer thrown in a gulag in Nunavut for the rest his life.

Because blackface is racist. What I did was racist. I wanted to communicate that black people are worthy of mockery. That they are apes. That they belong in cages. That's as racist as it gets.

Now, last week, I tried to excuse away my racism by saying I was a child of privilege. That I had grown up with a "blind spot" about such things. But we all know that's a lie. Growing up rich, and going to the best schools — being a child of privilege — doesn't excuse my racism. In fact, it's the reverse: It makes my racism all the more wrong. I, growing up in the house of the man who gave Canada a Charter of Rights, should have known better.

Anyway, words are cheap. I apologize for stuff all the time, to the point where the apologies have no meaning anymore. All that matters is actions, not words.

So, I will now do what I should've done last week. I intend to resign the office of the Prime Minister soon after the election, win or lose. And, by the way, I'm amazed I could still win it. That says a lot more about Canadians than it does about me, frankly.

So, there you go. I need time to get away and learn to be a better dad, a better husband, a better man. I can't do that as Prime Minister of Canada.

Because words can't excuse what I did. Because what I did was racist.

Thank you.

I don't know nor care if Trudeau is a secret racist or not. He is inept, out of touch, and intolerant of opinions different from his own. I would never vote for anyone with such disregard for liberty.

Politicians these days are full of worthless crooks I wouldn't urinate on them if they were on fire. Thinking about them makes me physically ill.

I used to be proud of my union and my socialist party. Not anymore. They have been hijacked by progressive money. Progs are the enemy of blue collar people.

Look, I know the people here like to separate right and left but there is no separation for me...

It's THE GOVERNMENT and they just change the jockey.

The only thing I can do to protect my sanity for politics is to involve myself with hobbies I love.

Double standards

Montreal — a Liberal candidate in montreal ousted over alleged anti-semitic comments said tuesday there is a double standard in the party when it comes to judging what is acceptable past conduct.

Hassan Guillet, who will run as an Independent but still refers to the Liberals in the first person, said he still doesn't understand his sudden removal over social media posts described by b'nai brith as anti-israel and anti-semitic.

Guillet did not directly refer to Liberal Leader Justin trudeau's blackface scandal following the publication last week of images showing him in brownface and blackface on three occasions. but Guillet said "several candidates in our party as well as others" have been confronted by old photographs or comments.

"I was the only one who had to pay the price for old publications," he told a news conference in the east-end riding of Saint-Leonard-Saint-Michel, joined by a small group of supporters.

"I feel that there is a double standard. It's obvious."

He said discussions with the party about his candidacy began in november 2017 and that his controversial comments "were known by the party a very, very long time ago."

By former Tory finance minister Joe Oliver.

Which one is the real Justin Trudeau?

Well, that didn't take long. After intense focus on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's three blackface photos last week, many in the media are back spouting Liberal talking points. The Liberal campaign, tired of being on the defensive, quickly reverted to painting Conservatives as bigoted cretins and to frenzied promises that would leave our children indebted for untold billions.

However, this issue won't go away so quickly because it reinforced the negative perception of Trudeau as a lightweight and a phoney, dealt a blow to his identity as a woke social warrior and undermined his legitimacy in Canada and around the world. It also raises the burning question of who Justin Trudeau really is.

History is strewn with flawed heroes brought down because of personal weaknesses that were evident to everyone else. As in a Greek tragedy, hubris can motivate a contemporary leader to break a moral code and end his glorious political career in disgrace.

Trudeau has many classic signs of narcissism, including a belief in his superiority, a profound sense of entitlement, boundless ambition, charm, competitiveness, need for constant praise and relishing the centre of attention. Paradoxically, narcissists often use and abuse others due to low self-esteem and insecurity, in some cases because they couldn't measure up intellectually to a father figure.

This may explain Trudeau's obsessive showboating — the Superman T-shirt, statement socks, eagerness for selfies, cringeworthy Bollywood dress-up and serial blackface performances. Part is political theatre, and since for him all the world's a stage, he loves playing the starring role.

It may also explain why, when he feels thwarted, Trudeau can lose his cool or act vindictively or with indifference to others. Recall how he manhandled the Conservative Whip, the late Gord Brown, and elbowed NDP MP Ellen Brosseau in the House of Commons. Far worse was his treatment of Jody Wilson-raybould and Jane Philpott for standing up to him on principle and the malicious failed prosecution of Vice-admiral Mark Norman, a 33-year navy veteran. He also unceremoniously ejected from caucus every Liberal Senator, many longtime party loyalists, as well as numerous MPS, often without a hearing into their alleged offences.

Trudeau seems taken back when foreign leaders won't tolerate the condescending sanctimony he can get away with at home. Somehow, he thought he could persuade Xi Jinping, supreme leader of 1.4 billion people, to change China's labour laws or coax the 'America First' president to adopt his gender equity and climate policies. And he expected Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ignore that he downplayed Indian concerns about Khalistan separatism. With the latest revelations, Trudeau diminished his standing internationally and weakened our chance for a Security Council seat.

Sometimes, Trudeau's platitudes are so vacuous you would think you were listening to Chance the Gardner in the 1979 film Being There. On other occasions, his troubling declarations challenge fundamental beliefs Canadians have fought and died for — Canada has no core identity, it is the first post-national state, how much he admired the basic Chinese dictatorship and Fidel Castro.

Is Trudeau's vision that Canada's sovereignty be subsumed in a multilateral organization run by a socialist autocrat and administered by progressive bureaucrats?

If not tightly scripted, he seems to blurt out whatever he heard on his father's knee or what his left-wing handlers whispered in the ear of their Manchurian candidate.

Given his erratic and inconsistent behaviour, we are entitled to ask who our Prime Minister really is, what are his fundamental values and what psychological forces are driving his decision making.

The ultimate question is, can he be trusted to lead our country for another four years?
