Searches for alternative countries to live in began to increase just eight minutes after the polls close, with the peak occurring at 8.16am on Friday after Johnson's huge majority was officially confirmed.

A similar search trend took place in the US in 2016 after Donald Trump was victorious in the presidential elections, as well as after the UK referendum to remain in the European Union that same year.

The most recent spike for moving to Canada was first spotted by online betting website OLBG, which tracks search trends relating to polling data and election campaigns.

"We started monitoring terms like this during the EU referendum result and saw similar trends, but this is the most dramatic it's been since we started monitoring them," said OLBG chief executive Richard Moffat.

"Normally, the search volume for the phrase "move to Canada" is around 1,700 searches a month, or around 55 a day. With the influx of this demand, the term could increase up to as much as 83,300 searches in the month or 2,738 searches in a single day."We started monitoring terms like this during the EU referendum result and saw similar trends, but this is the most dramatic it's been since we started monitoring them," said OLBG chief executive Richard Moffat.

Following the election result, hundreds of people also shared their intent to leave the country across social media, though many others who were unhappy with the result pledged to stay in order to make things better.

Anyone wishing to leave the UK is obliged to inform relevant government offices, such as HMRC, in order to move abroad.

Voters get the last word

After years of foes trying to subvert referendum, Brexit will get done

To the enormous shock and chagrin of those who believed U.K. voters had buyer's remorse after voting to quit the European Union in 2016, Boris Johnson was returned to 10 Downing Street as Prime Minister on Thursday with a massive majority.

He whomped the opposition, winning a landslide 80-seat majority with 365 seats, the most decisive win since Margaret Thatcher in 1987 and on a simple promise to get Brexit done.

Brexit naysayers had predicted a closer vote. It was even suggested Johnson might lose his own seat. That goes to show how out of touch some politicians and commentators are about public opinion.

Even those who voted to stay in the EU were fed up with the way politicians dragged their feet trying to thwart democracy and stop Brexit. Three years on, the economy was suffering as U.K. politicians kept going, cap in hand, to Brussels to hammer out a new Brexit deal. Johnson's predecessor, Theresa May, dragged her feet and was ineffectual in dealing with Parliament and the EU.

The nightmare demonstrated the contempt those who opposed leaving had for the democratic process. Legislators tied Parliament into procedural knots to prevent a democratically elected government from delivering what voters had asked for.

This strange, divisive and angry election was a referendum on Brexit. Unable to accept the referendum result, those opposing Brexit appeared to want to make it a best-two-outof-three scenario by defeating Johnson and his Conservatives in this election. There was an attempt at strategic voting, whereby Labour and Lib Dem voters in close ridings were urged to hold their noses and vote for the person most likely to defeat the Conservative.

Voters were in no mood for game-playing. The electorate told their leaders in no uncertain terms that they're tired of being mocked and ignored. It was a resounding affirmation for Johnson and Brexit.

He will now push ahead to implement the deal he's already brokered with the EU. He'll get

The electorate told their leaders in no uncertain terms that they're tired of being mocked and ignored."

Britain out of the EU by Jan. 31. In a news conference Friday, he struck a conciliatory tone, saying it's "time to heal." He wants to move on to other issues, which will be a huge relief to a country worn down by this endless Brexit debate.

The biggest loser is Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn, who voters rejected on a massive scale — with good cause. He's been accused, even within his own party, of anti-semitism. His hard-left policies, which included nationalization of key industries, had more in common with a war-on-capitalism sovietstyle economy than a modern Britain. His party was massacred.

Johnson's Conservatives won working-class constituencies that had been Labour for more than a century. It will take the Labour party a decade to recover.

Yes, there will be bumps on the road to Brexit. The Scottish Nationalist Party made gains and there's a real threat of another separation referendum. But would the EU want a Scotland without the rest of the U.K.? The border with Northern Ireland also needs to be figured out. But these are not insurmountable problems.

What the U.K. needs now is a free-trade deal so they can continue to do business with the EU without the frustration of being bullied, overgoverned and micromanaged by Brussels. That's why Brits wanted out in the first place.

Already there are protesters outside Downing St. demonstrating against Johnson's win. They'd better get over it. The people have spoken loud and clear, and voters are always right.

Those who fought Brexit, who would deny the will of the majority, need to stand back and allow democracy to happen and not try to turn it into a best three out of five.

British Muslims have started the process of leaving the UK over fears for their 'personal safety' now Boris Johnson is Prime Minister for five years, Metro.co.uk can reveal. Among them is the head of a Muslim charity, which provides food parcels for poor people in Manchester, after saying he was scared for the 'future of his children'. Manzoor Ali said: 'I'm scared for my personal safety, I worry about my children's future.' It comes after the prime minister was accused of 'Islamophobia and racism' following a number of controversial comments he made in the past, including his remarks in a 2005 Spectator article in which he claimed it was only 'natural' for the public to be scared of Islam.
