I believe the person was 60 years old with underlying health conditions... there were struggles for evacuees to navigate the roadblocks and get through in time... they're not releasing any other info on them. I'd like to know their ethnicity and health condition, at least... that would be helpful for those with the same particulars when the virus widens its footprint in the US and Western nations...



There does seem to be a concerted effort to stifle the flow of information in the last couple of days...

Coronavirus death toll tops SARS

Outbreak has killed more than epidemic in 2002-03



The global death toll from the novel coronavirus reached more than 810, Chinese health officials said, surpassing the total number of fatalities attributed to the outbreak of the SARS coronavirus in 2002 and 2003.



SARS killed 774 people as it spread in 26 countries during the nine- month epidemic, according to the World Health Organization. The fatalities from the new coronavirus have occurred in approximately a month.



Almost all of the fatalities have occurred in mainland China, except for one in Hong Kong and one in the Philippines.



The coronavirus continues to spread unabated in central China, as authorities there labelled masks a "strategic resource" and manufacturing companies pivoted to mask production to try to boost supply of protective equipment.



Despite efforts to contain the new virus, which Chinese health authorities Saturday officially named "novel coronavirus pneumonia" or NCP, the number of people in mainland China confirmed as being infected is more than 37,000. Roughly 6,100 cases were considered severe. A 53-year old American citizen died Thursday at Jinyint ian Hospital in Wuhan, the U.S. embassy in Beijing said Saturday.



Chinese media reported that the deceased was Hong Ling, a geneticist who specialized in rare human diseases. He was a graduate of Wuhan University who went to study in the United States in 1987, receiving a doctorate in biology from University of Arizona in 1994 before doing post-doctoral research at the University of California at Berkeley.



There are another 64 confirmed cases of coronavirus, including seven Canadians, on the Diamond Princess cruise ship anchored off the coast of Japan, with 3,200 people onboard.
