TORONTO -- As parents and students grapple with the risk of COVID-19, legal experts warn that schools and those operating private at-home 'pandemic pods' could be held liable in the event of an outbreak.

Experts say it's a complex issue compounded by the fact that neither the federal nor provincial governments have given school boards immunity from legal action in the event that a student contracts COVID-19 on school property.

Toronto-based personal injury lawyer Jasmine Daya says that if a child contracts the virus at school and spreads it to vulnerable family members who then experience loss of income or complications from the disease, the school or school board may be held liable.

However, she notes that a claim would likely only be successful if it could be proven that the school acted negligently.

[ Win or lose, that sounds like a lot of court action and cost to me]

...... Some schools and private education institutions have also considered requiring parents to sign a waiver indemnifying the school from liability. But experts say there is no guarantee it would stop a parent from pursuing a claim citing negligence or a related offence on the part of the school.

"Just like when we send our children to extra-curricular activities, you have to sign away the right to sue if there is negligence, it doesn't always mean that waiver is enforceable," said Daya.

If lawsuits are launched, expect teacher's unions to support the assault on taxpayers.

TORONTO -- A Canadian doctor is urging that COVID-19 patients be monitored and tracked long after the novel coronavirus leaves their bodies, as evidence mounts that the virus can cause long-lasting heart damage.

A study published in late July found that, of 100 adults in Germany who had recently recovered from COVID-19, 60 showed signs of ongoing heart inflammation. MRI scans picked up other cardiac issues in another 18 recovered patients.

The patients who were studied ranged in age from 45 to 53. Although one-third of the patients were hospitalized, none were deemed to have had severe COVID-19 symptoms.

"What we might be seeing here is a widespread prevalence of heart disease in patients with COVID-19," Dr. Gavin Oudit, a professor of medicine at the University of Alberta and an expert on heart failure, said Wednesday on CTV's Your Morning.

It isn't just the heart that can show lasting effects after COVID-19 infection, though.

This, Oudit said, is because of how coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV-2 attach themselves to a protein known as angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, or ACE2, which Oudit describes as a "very important enzyme in the body that has unfortunately been hijacked by [SARS-CoV-2] and is now being used as its receptor."

Although ACE2 is strongly associated with the heart, it is present in many organs.

"It's in the lungs; it's in the gut; it's in the cardiovascular system; it's in the kidneys; it's in the central nervous system – which is why COVID-19 patients do so poorly when they get very sick. It really is a multisystemic disease,"

Proof that locking down healthy people was a failed edict.

94 Percent of COVID-19 Deaths in US Have Contributing Health Conditions, CDC Says

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently updated information regarding COVID-19 deaths, indicating that 94 percent of them had other contributing health conditions.

According to the report, the CDC indicated that out of all the deaths recorded during this time, only six percent of them listed COVID-19 as the only contributing factor. Furthermore, the report indicated that in the other 94 percent, individuals suffered from, on average, 2.6 additional health conditions.

The CDC listed the top contributing health conditions along with COVID-19 as Influenza and pneumonia, respiratory failure, hypertensive disease, diabetes, cardiac arrest, heart, and renal failure, as well as vascular and unspecified dementia.

Coronavirus warning: Mass use of hand gels could CREATE unstoppable superbugs - expert

Dr Andrew Kemp, Head of Scientific Advisory Board on the British Institute of Cleaning Science, said alcohol based hand gels have still not been proven to kill Covid-19 on skin. But the Lincoln university academic said overuse of the gels will allow other bugs - commonly found on our hands - to learn how to survive them. If antibiotic resistant superbugs adapt to survive alcohol it could lead to an "armageddon situation", he warned.

He stressed that hand hygiene was vital to deal with the spread of Covid, and hand washing was a powerful weapon. But he warned that even the most potent sanitisers do not destroy every single bug, potentially giving rise to more problems.

The surviving bacteria would be resistant to alcohol and potentially far more harmful.

Efforts should instead be focused on encouraging handwashing, where bugs are rinsed away with water.

He said: "Hand gels should only be used as a last resort and as a short term temporary measure or stop gap if soap and water are not available.

"Claims on many hand gels that they kill 99.9 percent of bacteria are misleading. I am not aware of any hand sanitiser that has been tested against all species of bacteria. What they actually mean is that they kill 99.9 percent of the bacterial species they tested against. At the moment there is no published proof that alcohol gels killed Covid-19 itself.

"Even if they did kill 99.9 percent of all bacteria, there can be more than a million bacteria on your hands at any one time leaving 10,000 alive after sanitisation. These will be in a residue of sugar and protein. "Some species of bacteria can thrive on this.

"Recent research shows the surviving bugs which are not killed by alcohol gels are themselves highly dangerous pathogens and may increase in numbers. This means our routine use of gels could ultimately cause us more harm than good."

The World Health Organisation recommends washing hands regularly with soap and water. It suggests using an alcohol-based handrub "if you don't have immediate access to soap and water".

So much of the science in this pandemic has been wrong, and contradictory.....it's frustrating.

While it is new and extremely insidious, I expected more good and consistent science on protection and treatments

That said, it does seem the vaccine people, operating  removed from the scene and working their buns off, are doing well

Justin Trudeau's economic management has been abysmal. But, he is fast tracking 500 skilled refugees, that have been thoroughly vetted as well as quarantined for COVID. Many are working in the health care sector. So kudos for that.

We had over twelve hundred new infections yesterday across Canada..

Ontario and Quebec accounted for almost one thousand of those new infections..

There are projections that we could get five thousand new infections each day..

If that happens, destructive lock downs return.
