Alberta set a daily record today with 1105 new infections today.

This is interesting.

Mass testing: Can it save us from another lockdown?

There are also more targeted ways of using mass testing:

Regular, even daily, testing in a hospital or care home could prevent an outbreak among people who are at the highest risk of Covid-19

And it could keep places where the virus can spread, like schools and universities, open

Another option is a one-off test before being able to go to the cinema, theatre or a football match

New infections of COVID-19 could reach 60,000 a day by the end of December if Canadians increase their current level of contact with other people, according to modelling charts prepared by the the Public Health Agency of Canada and seen by CBC News.

According to the new modelling — which is to be released tomorrow —  that number could be limited to 20,000 a day if Canadians maintain their current number of personal contacts.

But to drive that number under 10,000 cases a day by the end of the year, Canadians would need to limit their interactions to essential activities while maintaining physical distancing and adhering to other public health guidelines.

Yes it could. It hit 6,115 2 days ago, although that is not the week's average ... back to 4645 today, about where it's been each day for last 2 weeks

From my spreadsheet compiled each Friday, Canada  went up 10,265 over  the week 2 weeks ago & 7,699 over last week .. This week the increase has slowed a lot and will likely go over last week by only 1,000 to 2,000 or so .. . this  week has been consistent around 4,500 / day just a bit over last week .. so it appears to be stabilizing around 4500 / day (at least for current week)

Quebec & ON, the increase is  stabilizing after weeks of rising

I'm not sayin it couldn't  jump, but that does not look like what they are saying in that article (although I don't give guarantees as no one really can guess for tomorrow .. I go mainly by trends to see if rising or falling cases / day)

The US has gone crazy. It cannot keep increasing like this without taking the country down with it. The totals are crazy & today it hit 192,186 new cases and has been rising each week steadily

All main EU countries are stabilizing .. UK, France, Spain, Italy Germany (the ones I track) will all be below last week, a couple by a lot

The spreadsheet is set to total each week on Fridays, so I have a good idea where they will be for the week. The increase itself has slowed down from previous weeks in all 5 of those I track in the EU

BC introduced a province wide mask mandate..

Alberta has mask mandates in our three largest cities only.

Yes, mandatory masks inside public places here

I'm good with that and glad I won't have to be go so far out of my way to avoid and be angry at the ignorant idiots who didn't have the human decency towards others and love of self and their own family and friends to wear one inside the grocery store etc

That should have been a requirement from start to finish

Coronavirus drug combo, baricitinib plus remdesivir, gets FDA emergency approval

The combo, rheumatoid arthritis drug baricitinib plus Gilead's remdesivir, was authorized to treat hospitalized patients 2 years or older requiring oxygen. The FDA said the drugs cut patients' time to recovery in a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases-sponsored trial dubbed the Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trial

Other countries have significantly lowered the number of those infected getting really sick with existing treatments. Health Canada has been a laggard approving treatments.

I added the following after your reply

Next day WHO  advised against using Gilead's remdesivir in patients hospitalized with coronavirus, weeks after the drug was shown to have "little or no effect" during the agency's multicountry Solidarity Trial.  .. wtf ever "solidarity" means in that context

NIH had done 2 trials, both indicating great help to the patient

Oh, and T supported it

Not sure of reason, but Quebec (5.2%) & Ontario (3.5%)  are keeping Canada's death rate / case  high (3.7%)

while other medium sized provinces are much lower .. BC has fallen from over 6% in early days to 1.3% & Alberta has always been low & now down to 1.1%

While still high now, Canada has come down from an initial 8%  .. and Ontario & Quebec deaths / case are also down considerably from horrendous numbers in the first months

That explains why the WHO advised against it.
