This is bad. And London is going back into a lockdown.

New variant of COVID-19 identified in Britain

London and its surrounding areas will be placed under Britain's highest level of coronavirus restrictions beginning Wednesday as infections rise rapidly in the capital, the health secretary said Monday, adding that a new variant of the virus may be to blame for the spread.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the government must take swift action after seeing "very sharp, exponential rises" in Greater London and nearby Kent and Essex. He said in some areas cases are doubling every seven days.

The surge of COVID-19 cases in southern England may be associated with a new variant of coronavirus, Hancock told lawmakers. He said officials are assessing the new strand, but stressed there was nothing to suggest it was more likely to cause serious disease, or that it wouldn't respond to a vaccine.

"We've currently identified over 1,000 cases with this variant predominantly in the south of England, although cases have been identified in nearly 60 different local authority areas," he said. Initial analysis suggests that the new variant is growing faster than existing variants, he added.

Lock downs or new strain of coronavirus?

Independent data analysts in B.C. claimed that province's rate was not being calculated properly and was, in fact, routinely above 10 per cent.

it simply means a change. An organism, in this case an antigen, mutates to adapt for a better chance at survival or it takes on faulty traits which can lead to its demise.

"We are aware of this genetic variant reported in about 1,000 individuals in England," Mike Ryan, chief of WHO's emergency program, told a news briefing Monday. "Authorities in the UK are looking at its significance.

We have seen many variants, this virus evolves and changes over time."

I think you meant this for my post above the one you quoted. I didn't have details on the mutated version. And we have no reason to believe the vaccine won't work it either.

Ontario reported 2,275 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, a new record.

cc

Yes. Ontario has not been as bad as Quebec from the start, but the last 3 + weeks, it's been trying to catch up

The death / case rate of Ontario is quite high (just dropped below 3% , but much lower than Quebec which just got under 5%)

Alberta at about 1 %  is prolly the best rate in the world (so far as I can see) & we have slowly come down fairly close to Alberta .. The far West has been way better in that area for a long while now .. even better than the best US states "now"

About 1  in every 50 people in Alberta and Quebec have contracted it  .. ON & BC are about 1 in 100

I corrected the misquote you spotted

Ontario and Quebec had more people in  continuing care test positive than in the West. That explains their higher death rates.

Alberta had 1341 new infections and eleven deaths..

Testing positivity rate was eight point two per cent.

This will be very expensive, but will help control the spread in low income areas, particularly up in Edmonton.

The Alberta government will send COVID-19 teams into the 11 hardest-hit neighbourhoods in Edmonton and Calgary to offer masks, hand sanitizer and more information, Premier Jason Kenney says.

The program will also provide free hotel rooms to allow people in those areas to self-isolate if necessary, Kenney said at a news conference on Tuesday.

The province reported 1,341 new cases on Tuesday, and a total of 20,649 active cases, which was down 474 from the day before.

It looks like our number of daily infections is starting to drop with 1270 new cases of COVID today..

But, the number of people dying from the virus is increasing..

Today, sixteen Albertans died from the coronavirus..

Almost everyday now, we have more than ten deaths.
