Macron calls for clinical trials of hydrocychloroquine coronavirus 'cure'

Emmanuel Macron called for clinical trials of a controversial coronavirus "cure" as he hailed the French infection specialist who promoted it as a great scientist.



The French president said on Wednesday that he would like the treatment, which was backed by Didier Raoult, tested rigorously as soon as possible.



The treatment is a combination of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin.



"I'm convinced that he's a great scientist, and I'm passionate about what he explained," Macron told RFI radio.



Macron's closed-door visit to Raoult's hospital on Thursday came after an online petition calling for wider distribution of the treatment appeared to be drawing support across France.

So, it is not just Trump who is promoting this as a treatment if not a partial cure. Whatever Trump or Macron say, the decision to try this drug combination should be up to the patient and their doctor.

I don't know if it works or not as a treatment..



But, I read a five day trial of low dose hydruxychloroquine in combination with that other drug will not cause coronary or other side effects.

Seems science will not accept 'good results" in a vacuum no matter how many were in study



It  wants a placebo group included



After two studies involving 24 and 80 patients, Raoult presented Macron with a third study carried out on 1,061 patients, but with no control group, of whom he claimed 973 were cured in 10 days.



Experts said the lack of a control group meant the results were meaningless. I would disagree .. "results were not the way science is programmed" is more accurate



In emergency I would disagree but science is stuck in its ways ... Move ahead and test with control group at the same time



They may not meet their "taught from 1st year university" standard ... but definitely are meaningful in real world terms / applications

There are some well meaning individual scientists for sure .... some who even work around the clock to help humanity



But, in effect, science at the top is a bureaucracy of its own

Some states allow it - Alberta doing 1300 people test with placebo  = valid scientifically

That(1600) is about 80% of the cases in Alberta.

Brief Summary:

Albertans with COVID-19 are at risk of deteriorating and developing severe illness. Those over age 40 or with co-morbid illness, and likely those who are immune suppressed, are at highest risk. This study will include a focus on people with immune-suppressed states. Individuals confirmed to have SARS-CoV-2 infection will be identified using administrative data (positive lab result, age 18 or over, not hospitalized, and not living in SL4 level of care). They will then be contacted by AHS staff, independent of the researchers, to obtain their consent for the researchers to contact them about this trial.

The current COVID-19 epidemic has also paused most ongoing research, thus providing access to many experienced researchers and highly trained research staff.



Lack of any proven treatments for this severe condition makes it imperative that we use the resources we have to try to improve the lives of Albertans and determine if there is evidence for the use of hydroxychloroquine for confirmed COVID-19 disease, overall, and in high risk participants.

Those who are eligible will be randomized to receive HCQ or placebo for a total duration of 5 days.
