While it might not be popular to say in the wake of the recent social disorder, the true plight of black people has little or nothing to do with the police or what has been called "systemic racism."

Instead, we need to look at the responsibilities of those running big cities in the United States.

On top of this, in many of these cities, blacks are mayors, often they dominate city councils, and they are chiefs of police and superintendents of schools.

In 1965, there were no blacks in the U.S. Senate, nor were there any black governors. And only six members of the House of Representatives were black. As of 2019, there is far greater representation in some areas — 52 House members are black. Nine black Americans have served in the Senate, including Edward W. Brooke of Massachusetts, Carol Moseley Braun and Barack Obama of Illinois, Tim Scott of South Carolina, Cory Booker of New Jersey, and Kamala Harris of California. In recent times, there have been three black state governors. The bottom line is that today's black Americans have significant political power at all levels of government. Yet, what has that meant for a large segment of the black population?

[size=150]Democratic-controlled cities have the poorest-quality public education despite their large, and growing, school budgets. Consider Baltimore. In 2016, in 13 of Baltimore's 39 high schools, not a single student scored proficient on the state's math exam. In six other high schools, only 1% tested proficient in math. Only 15% of Baltimore students passed the state's

English test. That same year in Philadelphia, only 19% of eighth- graders scored proficient in math, and 16% were proficient in reading. In Detroit, only 4% of its eighth-graders scored proficient in math, and 7% were proficient in reading. It's the same story of academic disaster in other cities run by Democrats.

Violent crime and poor education is not the only problem for Democratic-controlled cities. Because of high crime, poor schools and a less pleasant environment, cities are losing their economic base and their most productive people in droves. When the Second World War ended, the population of Washington, D. C., was about 800,000; today, it's about 700,000. In 1950, Baltimore's population was almost 950,000; today, it's around 590,000. Detroit's 1950 population was close to 1.85 million; today, it's down to 673,000. The population of Camden, N. J., in 1950 was nearly 125,000; today it has fallen to 74,000. St. Louis' 1950 population was more than 856,000; today, it's less than 294,000. A similar story of population decline can be found in most of the formerly large and prosperous cities in the U. S. In some cities, the population decline since 1950 is well over 50%, and that includes Detroit, St. Louis, Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

Academic liberals, civil rights advocates and others blamed the exodus on racism — "white flight" to the suburbs to avoid blacks. But blacks have been fleeing some cities at higher rates than whites. The five cities whose suburbs have the fastest-growing black populations are Miami, Dallas, Washington, Houston and Atlanta. It turns out that blacks, like whites, want better and safer schools for their kids and don't like to be mugged or have their property vandalized. And like white people, if they have the means, black people cannot wait to leave troubled cities.

White liberals and black politicians focus most of their attention on what the police do, but how relevant is that to the overall tragedy? According to Statista, this year, 172 whites and 88 blacks have died at the hands of police in the U.S. To put police shootings in a bit of perspective, in Chicago alone in 2020 there have been 1,260 shootings and 256 homicides with blacks being the primary victims. That comes to one shooting victim every three hours and one homicide victim every 15 hours. Three people in Chicago have been killed by police.

If one is truly concerned about black deaths, shootings by police should figure way down on one's list — which is not to excuse bad behaviour by some police officers.

I see from your article that Chicago had nearly three times as many homicides so far this year than there have been African Americans killed the police across the entire..

Perhaps BLM has focused on the wrong problems facing the African American community.

It's not even debatable that they are ignoring the herd of elephants in the room.

It's a no brainer, always has been ... yet, look at what the fuss is about

Here's where the real reform is needed

Past weekend - 85 Shot – 24 Dead in Chicago's Most Violent Weekend (area run by Democrats for over 60 years) following Leftist Riots — As Democrats Continue to Call to Defund the Police

Seems if you are not hurt by a cop you don't matter .. 24 "don't matter" people

Where are the protests and cameras???

If they need to "fix" something .. try the inner cities they run all of

And this goes in every big Left-run (as they all are) city on every day of the year, every year, every decade after decade without a peep

crickets ... ...... "so sorry, ... busy making public fuss over 1 person where the cameras are"

This diversion from real problems has been going on for decades

The Democrats are not interested in the REAL problems plaguing the African American community, hence the defund the police/George Floyd diversion.

cc

Always been that way, yet they get the votes to rule all major cities every election for 5+ decades .. go figure

I remember Detroit downtown fondly as a teenager

Thanks to the tunnel bus, a bunch of us would often would spend evenings there. Safe bars & restaurants .. often walked to hockey stadium and ball park to watch Wings and Tigers  .. vibrant downtown  .. fond memories

Last car trip decades later  I cried driving through the very same areas en route from Windsor ON westward .. . almost abandoned  .. so sad .. and that's pre current riots

The problems in black America are systemic, but it's not from discrimination. It comes from voting for the Democrats-the most corrupt political party in the Western world.

The Dems solution to the worst problems facing African-Americans is more of the same.

QuoteDemocrats Run The Cities With Worst Police Brutality

As debates about police brutality and systemic racism rock the country in the wake of George Floyd's horrific death at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis, Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King let himself utter an uncomfortable truth that other activists have been ignoring: Democrats control all the major cities where black people are experiencing the most police brutality and systemic racism.

In a tweet on Friday, the activist scolded those who tell black Americans to affect change through voting, asserting that such blind thinking may not exactly be the panacea people are talking about.

"STOP generically telling us to VOTE in response to all of the police brutality we have right now," said King. "Yes we should vote. But we have to be VERY specific. Democrats, from top to bottom, are running the cities with the worst police brutality in America right now. We voted for them."

Shaun King has yet to delete his tweet, even though Republicans have rightly been using it to point out what they have known for years: every institution that black Americans have the most issue with – Hollywood, law enforcement, the justice system – are predominantly run by Democrats.

Woodson Center, noted that for the past 50 years, Democrats have been the boss of every major American city, flooding them with poverty programs that have made the situation worse.

"In the past 50 years, $22 trillion has been spent on poverty programs. Seventy percent goes not to the poor but those who serve poor people," he said. "So many of those people taking office use this money to create a class of people who are running these cities, and now after 50 years of liberal Democrats running the inner cities, where we have all of these inequities that we have, race is being used as a ruse, as a means of deflecting attention away from critical questions such as, why are poor blacks failing in systems run by their own people? It's more class than it is race ... and now race is being used to deflect attention away from the failures of people running those institutions. The question is why are black kids failing in school systems run by their own people?"

"When Eric Holder was a U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C., a lot of young people were shot by the police, but they were black police shooting black kids, and not one was prosecuted," he continued. "But there was no public outcry because as long as illegality or evil wears a black face, then it escapes detection and that's what's wrong with looking life through the prism of race. I don't know what systemic racism is. Maybe someone can explain what that means."

Defunding the police will cause murder rates to plummet across the United States.

cc

Yes, it sure will .. especially in black areas of big cities

What they don't get is that for most, "security" is numero uno & that takes enforcement ..

Brilliant > Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced last week that he would redirect $250 million slated for the police department toward health care, jobs and other programs.

The Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union that represents rank and file officers, warned that budget cuts in policing could lead to more crime and slower 911 response times.

Do they think that violent crime rates will magically fall if there are no or fewer police to respond to violent crimes..

They seem to think law enforcement creates violent crime.
