Federal attorneys in North Carolina have been investigating allegations of voter-related fraud, and on Friday, announced that 24 additional people have been charged over the last 18 months.

Agents of Homeland Security Investigations under the Document and Benefit Fraud Task Force in the Eastern District of North Carolina launched a probe into voter fraud. On Friday, the U.S. attorney's office for eastern North Carolina released a statement revealing that four defendants were being charged with making false claims of U.S. citizenship in order to register to vote in the 2016 general election. The two charged with unlawful voting also are accused of false claims of citizenship, according to the Associated Press.



"Gabriela Guzman-Miguel, 26, and Jose Abraham Navarro, 42, both of Mexico, are accused to have voted despite lacking the legal status to do so," the Epoch Times reported. "The list described both as aliens or immigrants."



The defendants hailed from 15 countries, including Honduras, France, Yemen, Iraq, Nigeria, and Canada. The first charges were filed in September 2019, and arrests have been as recent as this month.



"The charges include making false claims of U.S. citizenship in order to register to vote, naturalization fraud, and fraud and misuse of visas, permits, and other documents as it relates to the registration to vote, and false statements in immigration proceedings," the statement from the U.S. attorney's office for eastern North Carolina reads, adding that there are no charges of conspiracy.



"Those charged face jail time and fines of up to $350,000 if convicted," the Epoch Times noted.



In August 2018, charges of voter fraud-related charges were announced against 19 foreign nationals. Robert J. Higdon, Jr., United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, unveiled charges against foreign nationals from Mexico, Italy, Korea, Haiti, Panama, Korea, El Salvador, Germany, Poland, Guyana, Nigeria, Japan, and the Dominican Republic. The foreign nationals were hit with criminal charges of voting by an alien and false claim of U.S. citizenship.



"The right to vote is a precious privilege available only to citizens of the United States," Higdon said in February 2019. "When a non-citizen votes in a federal election it serves to dilute and devalue the vote of American citizens and places the decision making authority of the American electorate in the hands of those who have no right to make those choices. This case is particularly disturbing as the defendant worked for the Board of Elections. My office will do its part to protect the rights of every American citizen to cast their vote freely and to have it counted fairly."

President Joe Biden told reporters on Friday that the Justice Department and his administration are "taking a look" at the legislation, which he claims is an "attack on the right to vote" in the Peach State.



The 95-page law adds a slew of changes to the way Georgians vote, including requiring photo or state-approved identification to vote absentee by mail. The law also mandates that secure drop boxes be placed inside early voting locations, with constant surveillance, and expand early voting across the state.



The law also shortens the election cycle from nine weeks to four weeks and requires a minimum of one week of early voting before election day. People who wish to vote absentee are faced with new requirements as well.



Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has responded to Biden's statement saying that "there is nothing 'Jim Crow' about requiring photo or state-issued ID to vote by absentee ballot."



The law, Kemp said, "expands voting access, streamlines vote-counting procedures, and ensures election integrity."

Georgia Governor Rejects Biden's Portrayal of State Election Reform Law



Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp rejected President Joe Biden's characterization of a newly enacted law that seeks to improve the integrity of elections in the Peach State.



"It is obvious that neither President Biden nor his handlers have actually read SB 202, which I signed into law yesterday," Kemp said in a statement emailed to The Epoch Times. "This bill expands voting access, streamlines vote-counting procedures, and ensures election integrity."



"There is nothing 'Jim Crow' about requiring a photo or state-issued ID to vote by absentee ballot—every Georgia voter must already do so when voting in-person," Kemp said in response. "President Biden, the left, and the national media are determined to destroy the sanctity and security of the ballot box."



Georgia's Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who was sued by voting rights groups on Thursday over the passage of the law, also responded to the criticism, saying that "there's no rational argument against requiring state ID—provided for free to those who don't have a driver's license—for absentee ballots," according to a statement sent to media outlets.



Raffensperger said he implemented a version of the identification requirement during the November 2020 election, saying that all absentee ballot requests that came through the state website were cross-referenced with a driver's license database or another record.



"The left said that photo ID for in-person voting would suppress votes. It didn't. Registration and turnout soared, hitting new records with each election cycle. Their cataclysmic predictions about the effects of this law are simply baseless. The next election will prove that, but I won't hold my breath waiting for the left and the media to admit they were wrong," he added.

Republican Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey criticized Democrats for driving a "false narrative" on voting rights during a Sunday morning appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press."



H.R. 1, also called the "For The People Act," was passed by the House on March 3 and is currently being considered by the Senate. It would make sweeping changes to U.S. election laws like banning state voter identification requirements, legalizing ballot harvesting, and automatically registering 16-year-olds to vote.



"We ought to be asking our Democratic colleagues why are they so insistent that we not have any mechanism to verify that a person seeking to vote is in fact the person that they say they are," Toomey said. "Why are they so insistent that people ought to be able to go ballot harvesting, maybe go through a nursing home and get a couple hundred ballots that just happen to be whatever they are."



"There is a completely false narrative about so-called voter suppression," he continued before moving to the recently-passed Georgia law. "There's no voter suppression. Sunday voting is still allowed. There's an expansion of in-person voting. There's no requirement that you have a reason for a mail-in ballot. All you need is some verification of ID and so does every department of transportation in America in order to drive. So does every airline if you're going to get on a plane. So this has been a false narrative entirely, Chuck."



The Pennsylvania senator suggested that the narrative exists as part of Democrats' attempt to "get rid of the filibuster."



"We're not going to be cowed by being called racist over policy that has nothing to do with race," he said.

Poll Shows Overwhelming Support for Photo ID Voting Requirement



Nearly three-quarters of Americans agree that voters should show photo identification before being allowed to vote, an Associated Press poll suggests.



Seventy-two percent of Americans participating in the survey, conducted between Mar. 26 and 29, said they are in favor of requiring all voters to provide photo ID in order to vote. Another 14 percent said they neither support nor oppose the measure, while the remaining 13 percent said they are against such a requirement.



The poll was conducted among 1,166 adults living in the United States via internet, landline, and cell phones, with a plus or minus 3.6 percent error margin. The sample was drawn using a probability-based system by the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research at the University of Chicago to represent the composition of the U.S. population.



The popularity of a voting ID requirement is supported most by Republicans, according to NORC, with 91 percent of participants who self-identified as Republicans supporting it. However, 72 percent of the Independents, and even a majority of those identifying as Democrats, at 56 percent, said they are in favor of requiring an ID to vote.

Pennsylvania Agrees to Remove Names of Dead Citizens From Voter Rolls: Settlement



The state of Pennsylvania agreed to remove the names of deceased people from voter rolls, an election-integrity watchdog group announced after reaching a settlement with state officials.



The lawsuit, (pdf) which was filed by the Public Interest Legal Foundation in November 2020, alleged that some 21,000 registrants who had died were still on the state's voter rolls at the time of the 2020 presidential election. Pennsylvania agreed to compare its voter-registration database with the Social Security Death Index, and then direct all county election commissions to remove the names of dead registrants.



"This marks an important victory for the integrity of elections in Pennsylvania," Public Interest Legal Foundation President and General Counsel J. Christian Adams said in a statement in announcing the court's decision. "The Commonwealth's failure to remove deceased registrants created a vast opportunity for voter fraud and abuse. It is important to not have dead voters active on the rolls for 5, 10, or even 20 years. This settlement fixes that."



The lawsuit was filed after the Nov. 3 election and when then-candidate Joe Biden took a lead over President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania. Ultimately, the Pennsylvania Secretary of Commonwealth's office certified the election.



The foundation said it found that 9,212 of the 21,000 voters had been dead for more than five years, and nearly 2,000 voters had been dead for more than 10 years.
