What kind of a lockdown does Australia have?

Do they have a curfew?

True. Charter of Rights is govt dictated and subject to change as against actual rights

I agree on guns. Just people having rights to them (whether they actually have them of not) keeps govt in check .. although your govt at all levels including even school boards do seem to be taking over everything of late, in effect ... gun time coming up??

I fear that "gun time" is coming to the US. If things keep progressing as they are, it's almost a certainty. On what scale, I cannot even hazard a guess but it's garrenteed to be very messy.

They have already framed dissenters to their ways as dangerous terrorists  .. in fact now formally labelled them as the # 1 threat to "their" society .. thereby backing 1/2 the population into a corner

I missed the gun debate in parliament, but apparently the Conservatives were on the wrong side if you believe Gerald Butts.

A Charter Right can't be taken away.

Don't kid yourself, anything that is granted by the government can ALWAYS be taken away for an indeterminate period of time.

Section 33 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms commonly known as the notwithstanding clause and sometimes referred to as the "override power" allows Parliament or provincial legislatures to temporarily override certain portions of the Charter.

I believe the "notwithstanding clause" has been used a few times through it's history....All any western government needs is an excuse to gin up a cause, a circumstance that they can claim is an emergency, a threat to public welfare, etc and bang... Your rights, privileges or whatever you want to call them, will start to fall like dominos.

It's only a law passed at that point in time

It's not a constitutional right?

I think it's part of the constitution. Remember when the supreme court ruled same sex marriage was a charter right.

That's what  I mean. It gets changed on whims or what is "in" that day, in that case by a court .. add rights, subtract rights etc.

When the supreme court gives a decision, it's not something that can be changed by governments.

Australia doesn't have a lockdown.

Like the US and Canada, Australia is a federation of States. A couple of States do have a lockdown, primarily because their State government is inept and out of its depth, but most States are not locked down. Or constrained in any way.

However, some States have closed their border with other States, which is contrary to our Constitution which forbids denying passage between States.

In the washup. courts are going to be busy sorting out the legal mess.

On the upside, the plague has most emphatically demonstrated how antiquated and outdated the notion of one nation with a multitude of separate sovereign States truly is.

So our so-called constitution is determined by judges and not by citizens ... no wonder Canada functions as 1/2 a nation  .. on a good day
