Moscow — Russia has sent military hardware and paratroopers to Kazakhstan as part of a "peacekeeping" mission following a plea from President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The Kazakh leader has vowed to quash massive protests across the country that started over gas prices, but have quickly spiraled into a much more significant challenge to the authoritarian leadership of the former Soviet Republic.

On Thursday the protests turned deadly. Police in Almaty, the country's biggest city, told local channel Khabar 24 that "dozens" of protesters had been "liquidated" following attempts to storm government buildings.

State TV said 12 law enforcement officers were also killed, including two who were purportedly found beheaded. More than 1,000 people were injured across the country, health officials said.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a Moscow-led alliance of six former Soviet states —Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan — promptly approved Tokayev's request to send additional forces to back up his own security services. It was the first major action by the CSTO since it was founded more than 20 years ago.

I hope they can secure his leadership. Not so much Kazakhstan, but there is a real danger of islamics taking over in several Central Asian states. They need secular authoritarians.

Found beheaded... Sounds familiar.

72% of them are muslims.

Not good.

Hopefully Russia suppresses the uprising.

Russia hinted that they are gonna bring war-material to Cuba.

 :laugh3:

Hey... Cubans have the right to ally with Russia, its a free country.  :laugh3:

It's a point well made.

The Soviet Union arming Cuba with nukes in the 60's was a clear signal to the US at the time that the American nukes installed in Turkey was a direct threat to the Soviet Unions security and so the Soviets responded in kind.

America went hysterical. Whilst much is made of the Soviet "provocation", little is said of the American anatgonism that preceded it.

Western history books describe the resolution of the crisis as a Soviet backdown. Russian history defines it as a major success.

If first strike weapons are installed in Ukraine, Russia has every right to be concerned, as those weapons will have only one target. Moscow.

Admitting Ukraine to NATO would effectively encircle Russia with military adversaries. This will be unacceptable to them. Russia's message is clear. If Ukraine is admitted to NATO, then it becomes a trip wire for military action to be directed at Russia. "An attack on one NATO member is an attack on them all".

Of course, from the Western side, allowing Russia to dictate who can and cannot join NATO is totally unacceptable.

Russia is betting the farm on the expectation that as long as Ukraine is not a NATO member, it can launch military action without inciting a NATO response. This option is not open to them if Ukraine joins NATO, as NATO outguns Russia by some margin.

The only political resolution open to both sides is for Ukraine to declare itself neutral and independent of NATO, with a treaty of some form preventing Ukraine placing first strike weapons on its territory.

This then leaves Ukraine defenceless against a Russian invasion.

That Jew Zelensky wants integration with the EU and membership in NATO.
