All taxes are evil, but consumption taxes are the best of the worst. They would be good for countries like Canada and the USA because it would encourage saving. However, in Japan's case they need people spending and raising the consumption tax will discourage that.

A demographic Armageddon on the horizon as they become a country of 100 million old people. Japan, unlike Singapore or South Korea has been reluctant to adapt to changes in their own and the world's economy. The one saving grace is that the Japanese have trillions of $$ in savings.

Oak, Japan is not going to pull their economy up simply because they are Japanese. No country is ENTITLED to a healthy annual GDP. Wealthy nations can go toes up too ya know. They are just given more rope to hang themselves.
