An Islamist group called for a Muslim lesbian author to be killed and invaded a discussion on Islam in Amsterdam last week.

A December 8 debate, which included the Canadian Muslim lesbian author Irshad Manji and MP Tofik Dibi on a panel, was disrupted when extremists from the group Sharia4Belgium stormed the event, held at the De Balie theater in Amsterdam. The mob threw eggs and called for Manji's neck to be broken.



The group of about 20 men and boys arrived halfway through the evening, chanted slogans and pelted the audience with eggs. A police mobile unit had to be called to eject the rioters, and two Belgian men aged 19 and 22 were arrested.



The people who disrupted the debate were members of the Belgian group Sharia4Belgium, an offshoot of Sharia4Holland. Irshad Manji has experienced death threats for several years since her outspoken attack on traditional Islam in her book The Trouble with Islam Today.



Dibi is a young, gay Dutch-Moroccan GreenLeft (GroenLinks) MP. In September, he launched a campaign calling on Muslims around the world to stop blindly following decrees issued by a handful of extremists, and to start thinking for themselves.



Manji was in Europe to promote her new book, Allah, Liberty and Love. She says that the key teaching of the book is "moral courage, the willingness to speak up when everyone else wants to shut you up."



The mob made clear that they felft that Dibi and Manji had no right to talk about Islam because they were too liberal, said Dibi. When the riot started, the audience made efforts to protect both speakers.



"What was really nice to see, and I have never seen, was that the whole audience stood up for us. And we have said, while they were shouting: 'We will not move. We do not go off the stage, we continue to stand here. You only have to listen to us. And if you do not like to hear us speak, then you zapping'" said Dibi.



Manji said:



"I never felt afraid. Not once. Neither did Tofik. In fact, all of us refused to leave, even when police asked. We wouldn't play on Jihadi terms. Some things are simply more important than fear."



Said Dibi:



"The disruption shows that even in the Netherlands it is necessary to continue the debate on reforming Islam."

Snopes, a website that investigates urban legends, looked into the so-called "no-go zones" after Emerson's interview, and found them to be a myth.



According to the website, the myth stemmed "from translation confusion over what are known as "zones urbaines sensibles" (ZUS) or "sensitive urban zones" in France."



"While some pockets of citizenry (including high-density Muslim populations) in France have indeed been identified as ZUS, and the term is not a designator for large populations of Muslims. Let's look at this logically.



Why hasn't any news organization reported on this? It would be a huge scoop. Fox News and other right-wing outlets would never pass up such an opportunity.



No non-Muslims allowed? How do these areas get resupplied with food and goods? No police, ambulances or fire trucks allowed? They wouldn't last more than a couple of weeks.



Does anyone really believe these no-go zones could possibly disallow police? They'd be arrested for obstruction. The police would never just turn away.



And of course, none of these alleged no-go zones are anywhere near 100% Muslim. Not even 50% in most cases. How can they be "no-go zones" when the majority aren't Muslim?

The debate over the state of Turkish children in Europe came to the forefront late last month when Deputy Prime Minister Bozdağ said some 4,000 Turkish children in Europe had been taken away from their families and given to Christian families.



Turkish children in Europe are being taken away from their families by child welfare offices over claims of abuse or financial problems, leading to the break-up of many families and the assimilation of children -- who grow up never learning about their culture and traditions and eventually lose contact with their families -- into European cultures.



"Turkish families do not want to give their children to gay and lesbian couples," Bozdoğ said, underlining that it is of critical importance that the children should be raised in a cultural environment similar to that of their families.



Bozdağ also said European officials do not respect the sensitivities and values held dear by Turkish families. Turkey is pursuing legal mechanisms to solve this problem, Bozdağ added, expressing his hope that positive developments will be seen with regard to Yunus' case.

French show eviscerates 'credibility of Fox News clowns' for comparing Paris to Iraq



The French television show Le Petit Journal this week took on Fox & Friends after the show claimed that Paris was like Iraq and Afghanistan because Islamic radicals had taken over parts of the city.



In an interview with Fox News host Elisabeth Hasselbeck over the weekend, journalist Nolan Peterson had claimed that there were "741 no-go zones throughout France, and they're located in these ghettos that have formed around the major cities."



"There are basically neighborhoods where French Muslims have coalesced because they can't find housing or economic opportunity within the major French cities," he opined. "It was pretty scary. I've been to Afghanistan and Iraq and Kashmir, India, and at times, it felt like that, those places in these no-go zones."



But Snopes investigated the so-called "no-go zones" and found them to be a myth caused by an incorrect translation describing areas that were "targeted for urban renewal initiatives."



So, the Le Petit Journal live audience in Paris couldn't help but laugh when the host played the Fox News clip.



"The credibility of the Fox News clowns disappeared when they show a map of Paris with some 'no-go zones'," the host continued.



Gasps and laughter could be heard in the audience as the clip showed the areas of Paris that Fox News had determined were "no-go zones."



Le Petit Journal sent a team of reporters to the "no-go zones" to lampoon Fox News.



The team traveled from Quartier Belleville to Quartier Marenta to Quartier Barbès to Quartier La Chapelle. Some Parisians were confused about why anyone would think Paris was like Iraq and Afghanistan. Others found the idea to be insulting.



"Your question is stupid," one woman told the reporters.
