Michigan is an Algonquin word Mishigami and Michigan has the largest coastal area on Lake Michigan even beating Wisconsin but definitely Illinois.

I live outside of Chicago and even I wouldn't want the name change.  The difference between Lake Michigan and a sewer in Calcutta is the amount of mercury in the water.
