Can you think of successes and failures?

Arnel Pineda replacing Steve Perry was a success..

JD Fortune as a replacement for Michael Hutchence, not as much..

Same with Larry Gowan in Styx..

Are there any others you can think of?

Genesis - Phil Collins steps in and replaces Peter Gabriel - Success

Genesis - Ray Wilson replaces Phil Collins - Epic fail.

Van Halen - Sammy Hagar replaces David Lee Roth - Success

Van Halen - Gary Cherone replaces Sammy Hagar - Epic fail

Pink Floyd - David Gilmore replaces Syd Barrett - Success

In many cases the word "success" is relative and debatable. Commercial vs critical success is always a balancing act.

That is true Renee..

For example, my husband does not like Van Halen with Sammy Hagar.

Oasis changing lead singers Liam and Noel Gallagher seemed to make no difference.

When a group changes their lead singer they are no longer the same band. They are a tribute band.

They are pretty well known amongst heavy metal fans.

Like Fash's husband, mine would disagree that Van Hagar was a success.  I like Van Halen with Hagar.

I agree 100% with your husband. I personally can't stand "Van Hagar". It stems from the fact that I just don't like Sammy Hagar. But nonetheless, the Van Halen line up with Hagar was a commercial success. The critical aspect is another story as Van Halen purists are and always have been vehemently against anything Van Halen without David Lee Roth as the front man.
