A victory for people in Jakarta who are getting sick from polluted air.

Indonesian court rules president negligent over pollution

An Indonesian court has ruled that President Joko Widodo and six top officials have neglected citizens' rights to clean air and has ordered them to improve the poor air quality in the capital

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- An Indonesian court ruled Thursday that President Joko Widodo and six other top officials have neglected citizens' rights to clean air and ordered them to improve the poor air quality in the capital.

Presiding Judge Saifuddin Zuhri ordered the seven officials to tighten national air quality standards so they are "sufficient to protect human health, the environment and ecosystems, including the health of sensitive populations, based on science and technology."

"They have been negligent in fulfilling the rights of citizens to a good and healthy environment," said Duta Baskara, a member of the panel. The judges dismissed a part of the lawsuit alleging Widodo violated human rights.

Irvan Pulungan, an adviser on climate change for Jakarta's governor, said the governor was open to working closely with the plaintiffs to solve the city's pollution problems and improve air quality.

Pulungan said the court decision that granted part of the plaintiffs' demand "is not a disturbance to the government's work but a vehicle for a collaborative effort to fix the unhealthy air."

He said the city administration has passed new regulations since 2019, including on emission tests and new curbs on private car usage.

"Central and local governments needed to integrate actions to maximize the effectiveness of policies," Pulungan said.

Jakarta counts 10 million people and three times more including those living in its greater metropolitan area. The severe air pollution in Jakarta stems mostly from vehicle emission, factories and coal-fired power plants located in the neighboring provinces of Banten and West Java, according to the Center on Energy and Clean Air in its 2020 report. It identified 136 industrial facilities, including power plants, as contributing to pollution.

[Background: City of Surrey decided to create its own police force to give people a homier feeling about police]

RCMP union files to register 5 'Surrey Police' trademarks, including 'Surrey Police Department'

The database reveals that the National Police Federation (NPF), which represents RCMP members, went on a trademark registration spree last year.

On April 16, 2020, the NPF filed to register 'Surrey Police Department,' 'Surrey Police Board,' 'Surrey Police,' 'Surrey Police Association,' and 'Surrey Police Union.'

Granum added that 'Surrey Police Service' was the preferred name because it "most accurately reflected its objective of developing a community-based police service."

Surrey Police Service media specialist Ian MacDonald echoed Granum in that he cannot speak to the motivations of NPF for filing trademark applications relating to Surrey police.

"I don't think the motivation, whatever it was, was to ultimately advance the efforts of SPS," MacDonald said.

"It's a head-shaker."

{No it's not. It's a petty after all else failed power play against a supposedly  allied  police force & union

Petty  $%%^&&** .. Note: RCMP union has done everything it can to stop Surrey  since inception of the plan (to no avail) - plan which is now almost complete

At least they didn't defund them.

I believe funding is mainly local as every municipality that uses RCMP pays for it

Otherwise, Surrey could not afford doing it (not sure exactly how funding works)

I give them points for doing it - I believe all police should be local run - with RCMP acting  sort of like FBI federal role

I wish much smaller White Rock had joined them as we are literally surrounded by Surrey (except only for ocean area which doesn't count)- Maybe they will in future

A horrific school shooting in Russia's large central city of Perm has left at least six people dead and 28 injured.

Terrified students and faculty were filmed jumping out of windows at a university campus as a gun-wielding young man walked across campus and into buildings opening fire.

CNN reports that "A suspect in the shooting was arrested and wounded after resisting law enforcement officers, according to Russia's Investigative Committee, a state body that handles major crimes." Unconfirmed social media video appeared to show the shooter suffered multiple wounds and paramedics initiated life-saving steps at the scene.

The global semiconductor shortage will lead to 7.7 million fewer vehicles produced in 2021, costing automakers billions in lost sales, according to consulting firm AlixPartners.

The forecast, released Sept. 23, estimates that the shortage will cost the auto industry $210 billion globally in lost revenue in 2021, up sharply from the May projections of $110 billion in forgone sales and 3.9 million fewer vehicles built.

despite having its right wing almost completely sheared off in the collision.

The lifting body properties of the F-15, together with its overabundant engine thrust, allowed the pilot to achieve this unique feat.

He flew it home as a rocket, not as a plane

Total fatalities: 0

Total survivors: 3 (pilot of plane colliding with it ejected and came down successfully also)
