Good for them. The previous federal government had it right. The current one cares more about the feelings of radical muslimes than the security of Canadians.

QuoteThe law will apply to dual nationals involved in offenses related to terrorism , including fighting with terrorist groups abroad, finance, training and recruitment.

Attorney-General George Brandis said the measure would be used in "very limited circumstances."

"It will also ensure terrorists who are dual nationals are prevented from returning to Australia and dual nationals who engage in terrorism within Australia can be removed where possible," he said.

"Dual nationals who engage in terrorism are betraying their allegiance to this country and do not deserve to be Australian citizens," Brandis said.

The law's passage comes as countries are increasingly concerned over blowback from the flow of foreign fighters to Iraq and Syria following the Paris terror attacks.

I hope very limited circumstances is extremely exceptional circumstances.

Well, Australia has a point. A person can use their dual citizenship as a gift to promote peace, goodwill and stronger family ties. But if they use it to commit acts of violence against Australia or others, then lose it.

Mind you, one problem with that law, is that it doesn't take into account how certain nations are granted preferential treatment. Israel being one example. Many Australian, Canadian, American and British born citizens are choosing to fight for the state of Israel, although they weren't born there.

Nor are their countries of origin waging a direct war against the Palestinian people. We should also tell these people to leave, become citizens of Israel and don't come back as well, especially if they incur injuries as a result of war. It's not our responsibility to pay for and take care of belligerents in foreign conflicts which our nations have no direct part in.

I hadn't thought about this JOE...good points, thank you.

It is a prickly issue here.

I have dual citizenship. The Minister can now strip me of my Australian citizenship and I would have NO recourse.

Unless you go overseas to join jihadist groups, you have nothing to worry about.

The potential for abuse is scary, that is for sure. But, in theory at least, getting terrorists off of our soil is sound idea.

The authority to rescind Australian citizenship from dual citizenship holders is not qualified by any form of conduct.

The Minister is now able to rescind MY Australian citizenship, and I have no recourse.

It is not necessary for me to demonstrate ANY form of terrorist act.

Well, that's a crapper. Seems they can't deal with one old straightforward  problem without creating more new problems

What is the criteria for rescinding citizenship?

I hope everything will work out Mr. Crowley.

The discretion of the relevant Minister. Period.

The current minister has stated that he would only use this authority in the case of international terrorist activities.

But what about the next one...and the one after that...and the one after that...

Whilst the general thrust of the legislation is applauded, there are no enough safeguards in it for non-terrorist related circumstances. For example, many of our bikies are from other countries; the Minister can, and already has cancelled the Australian citizenship of one (although he was not in the country at the time). Now, we may think getting rid of organised gang members isn't such a bad idea. How about embezzlers. Rapists. Paedophiles. Shoplifters. Drunk drivers.

Maybe Shen Li will give the criminal bikers refugee status at her house.
