John "Sib" Hashian, who played the drums on rock group Boston's first two albums, has died at 67.

His son Adam, who confirmed his death to TMZ, said Hashian was playing a set on a Legends of Rock Cruise when he collapsed Wednesday night. He did not provide the cause of death.

This is an awesome thread, and one of my reasons to stop in here.  I hope it continues.

I'm always nervous when this thread is bumped..

Understandable, but it underscores our fear of mortality.  I speak only for myself despite the plural pronoun I chose.  It's especially challenging for people of my generation, since we are reaching (or have reached) the Biblical "three score and ten" and the raindrops are becoming a thunderstorm.

This seems like a good place to repost a piece from last week.

My condolences, and it's a sweet idea which I'll borrow after this post.  I'll be honoring the Real Elizabeth Reed, the woman to whom Dickey Betts dedicated that Allman Brothers concert warhorse jam tune nearly 50 years ago.  She was the dearest friend I've known in all my life, and a helluva human being...full to overflowing with strengths and flaws.  She died a couple of months ago, of complications from heart surgery.  I'll miss her with my dying breath, and for a couple of eons after that.   ac_crying





Also, one of my favorite Canadians (Leonard Cohen) died back in November after using his deathbed time to put together a last farewell album -- You Want it Darker -- which is another masterpiece, but dark as hell.  I posted a tune from it yesterday on The Pulse.

RIP J Geils. Found dead in his home. 71 years old.  Put on a good show when I saw him back in the early 80's. Still have the t-shirt.

They didn't say what kind but apparently she had stage 4 cancer. No narcotics were found in her residence.

Chris Cornell, the powerful, dynamic singer whose band Soundgarden was one of the architects of grunge music, has died at 52.



Mr. Cornell died Wednesday night in Detroit, said his representative, Brian Bumbery, in a statement that called the death "sudden and unexpected" and that said the singer's family would be "working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause."



Mr. Cornell was born in 1964 in Seattle and helped form Soundgarden 20 years later. Sub Pop, then a fledgling record label, released the group's first single, "Hunted Down," in 1987, as well as two subsequent EPs. The group's debut album, "Ultramega OK," came a year later.

"Badmotorfinger," released in 1991, benefited from the swell of attention that was beginning to surround the Seattle scene, where Soundgarden, along with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, were playing a high-octane, high-angst brand of rock 'n' roll. Soundgarden's musical journeys tended toward the knotty and dark, plunging into off-kilter meters and punctuated by Mr. Cornell's voice, which could quickly shift from a soulful howl to a gritty growl.



Mr. Cornell had admitted in interviews to struggling with drug use throughout his life. In a 1994 Rolling Stone article, he described himself as a "daily drug user at 13," who had quit by the time he turned 14.



After Soundgarden disbanded in 1997, Mr. Cornell returned to heavy drug use, he told The Guardian in a 2009 interview, describing himself as a "pioneer" in the abuse of the opiate OxyContin, and saying that he had gone to rehab.
