I'm sure her and that cranky old pig Renee left simply due to some changes around this forum.  While it doesn't look like much has changed, RW and Renee clearly aren't very "dynamic" in their handling of even slightly changing environments.  Like typical modern Western women, it's "their way or the highway."

And then you have the New Zealanders...  We had neighbours that were originally from NZ when I was a teen.  I asked them what part of of Australia they were from.  Christ, they were so offended that I thought they were Auzzies, that I never asked them anything more about where they were from.

Interesting fact:  During WWII, my Grandfather spent seven years as a "POW" in SA.  From the age of 14 to 21, he remained there.  I think it was Capetown.  It wasn't an actual POW camp, as they could move freely throughout town, get jobs, etc.  Nonetheless, he was a Kraut and had to stay put there...

My Grandfather possibly watched over him...he was in the British Army. He also patrolled the coast of Western Australia guarding the Aussies from the Japanese. His ship alternated between SA & WA. After the war he falsified his passport and remained in SA. Many of the lads did.



All that aside...I'm sure your Grandfather enjoyed Cape Town, indeed a great and special part of Southern Africa.

Could have.  You know, my Grandfather never really did complain about the conditions there...  Sure, he didn't want to be there, but it wasn't that bad!



He was young, but you'd apply for a job there just like today!  Bring in a resume.  He was hired as a cook.



Times were tough, and if you smoked, you'd save your butts you re-roll them...  Not living on cloud nine, but not that bad.



Back then, the Negroes knew their place in town, so they weren't a concern it seems.



After the war ended, he decided to come to Canada for some odd reason...  And here I am.  First gen, since my parents came here also as kids.
