Ah hell, that is nothing. Alberta, Newfoundland and my own province of Saskatchewan are worse. Alberta is in the worst shape because they have an incompetent  socialist government with not one elected member with industry experience. We are in the best shape of the three because we have a pragmatic leader who would never deliberately do anything to deepen the economic pain like Alberta and Newfoundland are doing.

Another point is that when the boom was booming, Western Australians thumbed their nose at the rest of Australia, claiming to be the righteous engine room of the Australian economy. They complained that "their" natural resources (whatever happened to living in one nation) were paying bills for other States, and they wanted more of the pie.



The worm turns. It will be interesting to see how they feel about living in a Commonwealth now.



The issue is, of course, that like Canada, Australian is a Federation of States. This structure was essential when there were no such things as electricity and video games, but in a modern world, three tiers of government is 2 too many, and so State governments act in competition with each other, instead of pulling together for the national good.



Not to mention, of course, that State governments and their replicated bureaucracies are hugely expensive, and simply dissolving them would help pay of lot of other bills.

It's a little different in Canada. Alberta in particular has been the province that has paid the bills for the nation for the last two decades. Quebec, on the other hand is the tail that wags the dog and the feds take the money out of working Albertans pockets and buy votes with it in Quebec and Ontario too. It's called equalization payments and it is pure corruption. In return Quebeckers show their gratitude to Albertans and Saskatchewan too for all the money we send them by blocking pipelines to tidewater so that our two provinces cannot get international prices for our oil. We are at the mercy of one customer(USA) and they take advantage of being our only customer by deeply discounting our oil. It makes secession a tempting option for some people in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

There is no Bloc Quebecois/Parti Quebecois, Western Canadian separatist groups is there?

I lived and worked in Queensland for a while. There is definitely regionalism in Aus, but they are not stupid about it like Canada. National infrastructure projects can be built there.

Good for you brother is that is what you want. Iron horse jockey plans on moving to some Caribbean paradise when he retires. I like my farm and I do not intend to move anywhere despite how fricking frigid Saskatchewan gets in winter.
