Fremantle locals say they're upset and angry to see a historic tree cut down without their knowledge.

The Kings Square giant was cut down on Tuesday, as many horrified locals watched on.

The Moreton bay fig tree was 130 years old, and was most well known, particularly on Instagram and Facebook for lighting up Kings Square during Christmas-time, as a public Christmas tree that hundreds would take pictures in front of.

But over the last decade, the Fremantle council said it had been in decline, the victim of old age.

"In February last year the City engaged a bio-scientist to conduct sampling and testing on the Kings Square fig tree after it started showing signs of distress." The City of Fremantle said in a statement.

"In July and September the tree was given an injection of a naturally occurring enzyme in the hope that it would boost the tree's ability to absorb nutrients and help it recover, but so far its condition has not improved."

The Fremantle council even brought in a specialist tree doctor from Melbourne to try and salvage it.

But the decision was made in February to remove and replace the tree, and the city said it consulted with the public.

But when the tree was actually cut down yesterday, a lot of locals expressed their disappointment stating they didn't know the tree would be removed.

"Goodbye to Fremantle's big beautiful Moreton Bay Fig Trees in kings square they held many spirit animals within them and gave comfort and shelter to many for 130 years , true elders and guardians of Fremantle." One user wrote on Facebook.

Many locals The West Australian spoke to said they had no idea the tree was going to be cut down.

"After spending 50 years here, and seeing the trees being felled, there's not much talk about them doing it, they're saying it's deteriorating, but I don't believe that," one local said.

The City of Fremantle said mature London Plane trees would replace the historic tree, and timber from the Moreton Bay fig tree would be given away.

It sounds like a tree version of putting it to sleep.

Moreton Bay fig trees are horrible.

They are messy, ugly and grow to massive size.

You would hardly be standing under a banyan (Moreton Bay) tree.

The debris and root system do not lend themselves to loiterers seeking respite from the heat. Eucalypts are far better.

Travelling the Great Northern Highway in the old days from Perth to Dongara, the greatest relief on earth was the canopy of Moreton Bay figs the whole strip of the main road.  ... It was the HUGE relief of mum with 4 kids to drive through that cool...

and just think, mum used to drive with us four kids travelling 65-75 miles an hour with no seat belts....lol

those were the good old days of quite roads and WAYYYYYY less population... We were kings of the world.

One of Kurt's relatives came over from Austria for a holiday... He could not believe Kurt still had a 1971 truck he was driving around.  He said salt rusts all their cars in Europe.

I put it up there being in the top 5 greatest tree varieties on the planet.

You need to reconnect to nature...

I can connect well enough without a banyan tree destroying everything around it and leaving debris everywhere.
