The train was carrying more than 366 passengers from a suburb of Taipei in the north to Taitung, a city on Taiwan's southeast coast

DONGSHAN TOWNSHIP, Taiwan — At least 22 people were killed and 171 others injured on Sunday when one of Taiwan's newer, faster trains derailed on a curve along a popular weekend route, officials said.

Late Sunday night, hours after the Puyuma express derailed, one of the train's eight cars was seen tipped over at about a 75-degree angle, with the entire right side destroyed. Firefighters with lights on their hard hats, fearing people may be trapped beneath the car, were looking underneath as a crane prepared to upend it.

The train was carrying more than 366 passengers from a suburb of Taipei in the north to Taitung, a city on Taiwan's southeast coast, when it went off the tracks at 4:50 p.m., the Taiwan central government said in a statement.

The Puyuma was launched in 2013 to handle the very difficult topography of Taiwan's east coast and is distinct from the high-speed rail that runs on the west coast. The Puyuma trains travel up to 150 kilometres (93 miles) per hour, faster than any other in Taiwan except for the high-speed rail.

The National Fire Agency cited the Cabinet spokesman's office as saying 22 people were killed and 171 injured in the disaster.

Hard to believe that the conscientious and meticulous Taiwanese would experience such a failure.

Terrorism???

Didn't think of that. Assumed something went very wrong .... stuff happens with mechanical entities no matter how meticulous

Seems most major  train accidents are due to not slowing down enough for curves

Not heard explanation for this one yet

[OOPS - After another search - Can't quite believe a court would act so quickly - System must work different there]

October 23 at 8:16 AM - Taiwan court: Excessive speed caused deadly train derailment

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Excessive speed was the main cause of the derailment of a train in Taiwan that killed 18 people and injured scores of others, a district court said Tuesday.

The train entered a curve in eastern Taiwan on Sunday afternoon at 140 kilometers (87 miles) per hour, almost twice the speed limit for that section of track, the Yilan County district court said in a statement.

The train's driver has been placed under investigation on suspicion of negligence leading to death.

The driver, Yu Cheng-chung, had disabled the automatic train protection system after sensing "abnormal movements" in acceleration, the court statement said. The system would have allowed him to brake, and without it the driver was left to control the train by hand, it said.

"Because the automatic train protection system had been disabled, the driver should have been more careful in controlling the train's speed and used the brakes to prepare for avoiding danger," the statement said.

In the train's approach to the station where it derailed, the driver did not notice the speed rules, the court added. The train was not scheduled to make a stop at the station, where the speed limit is 75 kph (47 mph).

"There was no way to make the curve, causing the entire train to derail and flip over, resulting in the deaths of 18 people," the court said.

The driver was released on bail of 500,000 Taiwanese dollars ($16,141) and is not allowed to leave Taiwan.

Possible mechanical problems with the train are also being examined.

[How come so fast from court?, yet leaves open other possibilities? - I don't quite get this "court" thing

Also, as no more casualties, seems previous fears of more deaths not yet found didn't come true]
