QuoteAs President Donald Trump threatens to shut down the U.S.-Mexico border, some of the highest-ranking Texans from within his own party are warning about the consequences of doing so.

"Closing the border to legal commerce would be devastating to Texas," U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said in a statement Wednesday evening. "Millions of jobs, in Texas and across the country, depend upon trade with Mexico, and the federal government shouldn't do anything to jeopardize those jobs."

Well there you go.  The highest number of illegals coming in in ten years and apparently no one will stop it.

Trumps response is to put tarriffs on cars a year from now :001_rolleyes:

Quote"If the drugs don't stop — Mexico can stop them if they want to — we are going to tariff the cars. The cars are very big, and if that doesn't work we are going to close the border," Trump said at the White House. "We are going to give them a one-year warning."

I know you blame the Democrats for not wanting to stop illegal immigration, but the Republicans are no better. Agriculture and construction are dependent on the cheap labour illegal immigration provides.

As has been said here many times, there is no right in North America.  Among republican voters illegal immigration is the number one issue and they do NOTHING to stop it.  They refuse to represent their voters.

I think Trump should have set a deadline for closing the border and told congress do something or the border gets closed.  Maybe there's another way but I don't know what it would be.

It is is it? That makes sense, there's full employment, taxes have come down and there is no national carbon tax.

Any temporary pain(avocado shortage) will be mitigated by the savings that each illegal costs American taxpayers.

This is what Trump should do-- Shut down the border to all immigration, but allow commerce.  Then tell congress he will open it again when they have fully funded the wall and do something to fix the ridiculous asylum laws.

The media is missing the point about the president's inherent and delegated authority to deny entry at the border and the most prudent way to use it. Through statute and case law, the president's 212(f) authority overrides all other immigration processes, including asylum requests, but it's important to remember that it's not an all-or-nothing proposition. It's not an on-or-off circuit breaker on the operation of our border. There are modules on that switch that the president can engage to strategically address the current situation.

Let's again review the language of the relevant statute, 8 U.S.C. §1182(f):
QuoteWhenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.

Even if the rest of the general operating statutes were broken (they are not), this statute alone supplies the president with all the authority he needs to deal with such an urgent and devastating crisis, at least in the relative short run. If members of Congress were to get together and craft a new law with the intent of giving the president more power to shut down what is happening today, they could not conceivably have written anything strong than this existing law, which has been in place, in some form, since 1893, particularly to keep out those with diseases.

The law is saying that the president can shut down all migration or any type of migration, while leaving others in place.

White house plans to target remittance payments.

QuoteThe White House is planning on targeting remittance payments made by illegal immigrants in the wake of an ongoing migrant flood at the U.S. southern border, a senior administration official told reporters Tuesday.

The plans to target remittance payments come amid a broader shakeup at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and future executive actions designed to curb illegal immigration. The situation at the southern border has escalated in recent weeks, with thousands of migrants arriving daily to claim asylum.

Officials say the illegal arrivals are spurred by loopholes in U.S. immigration law that allow family units claiming asylum to arrive illegally and still be released into the interior of the country with a work permit.

The migrants are then given a court date at some point in the future to adjudicate the asylum claim, with the vast majority failing to ultimately get a favorable asylum ruling. These migrants rarely show up for deportation, with the senior administration official calling the practice "backdoor illegal immigration."

The White House plan to go after remittance payments falls in line with a proposal from former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who is being considered to replace outgoing DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

Kobach told Breitbart News on Tuesday that this will be an effective way for President Donald Trump to compel the Mexican government to take more enforcement action against Central Americans trafficking through their country.

Kobach told Breitbart, "The threat I propose is one that actually helps us if we follow through on it. That is the threat of ending remittances from the majority of people in the United States from Mexico who are here illegally," adding "they don't want to risk losing that massive flow of foreign capital. In most years, it's their second biggest source of foreign capital."

Trump is mulling over the idea of putting those awaiting asylum decisions into sanctuary cities--

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf — who has sparred with Trump over her warning about imminent local immigration enforcement raids — chided the president for "using human beings to settle political scores" in a Twitter post Friday.[/quote]

Dumbest idea I've ever heard.

Did you know that Trudeau is actually getting quite tough with illegal aliens. His support is collapsing nation wide, so he is stealing the Conservatives thunder.
