Melting Greenland glacier is growing again



WASHINGTON — A major Greenland glacier that was one of the fastest shrinking ice and snow masses on Earth is growing again, a new NASA study finds.



The Jakobshavn glacier around 2012 was retreating about 3 km and thinning almost 40 metres annually. But it started growing again at about the same rate in the past two years, according to a study in Monday's Nature Geoscience. Study authors and outside scientists think this is temporary.



"That was kind of a surprise. We kind of got used to a runaway system," said Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland ice and climate scientist Jason Box. "The good news is that it's a reminder that it's not necessarily going that fast. But it is going."



Box, who wasn't part of the study, said Jakobshavn is "arguably the most important Greenland glacier because it discharges the most ice in the northern hemisphere. For all of Greenland, it is king."



A natural cyclical cooling of North Atlantic waters likely caused the glacier to reverse course, said study lead author Ala Khazendar.

Jason Kenney slams Toronto council's proposed oil lawsuit



United Conservative Leader Jason Kenney is putting Toronto City Council on notice.



Kenney is upset at a motion by Coun. Mike Layton, who has proposed suing oil and gas companies over climate change.



With the election now in full swing, Kenney took time out at a Tuesday campaign announcement in Edmonton to say he'd written to Toronto Mayor John Tory to slam the motion as "injurious to national unity," "divisive," and "damaging to Canada's economy."



With recent polls suggesting half of Albertans support secession from Canada, going through with the motion would "pour more gas on the flames of the growing national unity challenge," Kenney said Tuesday.



"The adoption of Coun. Layton's motion would be seen by most Albertans as another example of a campaign to attack and vilify the essential role that our province plays in Canada's economy," Kenney said.



"Albertans are tired of being a punching bag for virtue-signalling political efforts that seek to apply a higher standard to our energy than to OPEC oil or other sectors of our economy, such as Ontario's automobile and transportation industries."



If Alberta elects a UCP government, Kenney said, "I'm putting our friends in Toronto on notice — we will not take this lying down."
