He would have been on a different employment contract, in which he can be removed by Government decree.

I am surprised he was able to be removed since he is an elected official.n  I didn't know that could be done.

Flanked by members of a local African-American faith community, a defiant Scott Israel defended himself against allegations of incompetence on Friday and made clear he would fight his suspension on any front necessary — whether before the Florida Senate or in state or federal court.



Israel, 62, a two-term Democratic sheriff of Broward County, was suspended by Gov. Ron DeSantis three days after the new Republican governor was sworn into office.



But Israel, clad in a suit and tie rather than his usual sheriff's uniform, said DeSantis' actions were motivated by politics, not facts.



His lawyer, Stuart Kaplan, said that not only would Israel fight the governor's order, but he would run for re-election when his term ends in 2020.



Kaplan said that they were still exploring avenues to challenge the suspension, which the governor issued at his own news conference in Fort Lauderdale about an hour before.  

Not an ounce of shame.

I believe it depends on the area / locale. Many chiefs are appointed by the mayor, for example NYC is a certainty

That changes nothing. If public officials are appointed by political parties, then corruption is inevitable.

I looked it up and  a police chief is appointed by and answerable to a national or local government

All police chiefs are. But it's HOW that appointment process is undertaken that is important.



Here, the Government engages a professional employment agency to recruit its Commissioners.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has arrested former Broward Sheriff's Deputy Scot Peterson for his inaction during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland last year, which left 17 dead and 17 others injured.



Charges include seven counts of neglect of a child, three counts of culpable negligence and one count of perjury.



"The FDLE investigation shows former Deputy Peterson did absolutely nothing to mitigate the MSD shooting," FDLE Commissioner Rick Swearingen said in a statement. "There can be no excuse for his complete inaction and no question that his inaction cost lives."[/quote]

This is going to be interesting court.



Are police officers legally compelled to enter an active fire zone, regardless of risk to themselves?



At what point does the officer have the discretion to say..."It is too dangerous and high risk. I must await more backup"?



Because that is what this case will hinge on...what is the tipping point and WHO gets to decide?



My guess? He walks.



Not guilty.

Cops from another jurisdiction arrived and immediately ran right past him (and other Browards who never left their vehicles) to enter the school .. I now forget the name of their group

When Coral Springs police officers arrived at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14 in the midst of the school shooting crisis, many officers were surprised to find not only that Broward County Sheriff's Deputy Scot Peterson, the armed school resource officer, had not entered the building, but that three other Broward County Sheriff's deputies were also outside the school and had not entered, Coral Springs sources tell CNN.



The deputies had their pistols drawn and were behind their vehicles, the sources said, and not one of them had gone into the school.

What equipment to handle the situation did these deputies have?



Were they trained in handling an armed offender situation?



What was the school layout? Could they enter it safely within reason? Put another way, if the chances of them being shot were high no matter where they entered, what were they supposed to do?



How did they assess the risk? What were the circumstances upon which they chose to respond as they did? Was the offender using high calibre firearms? Were the officers able to distinguish high calibre from small calibre by sound?



Bear in mind that general response police officers here in Oz are trained to CONTAIN, not neutralise armed offenders. I suspect that is standard operational procedure the world over.



I get it. The guy did nothing. But in my view, these school "deputies" are merely token gestures to school security. If they were genuinely there to act, he would have had, at the very least, a military grade rifle, a bullet proof vest, a ballistic helmet, tear gas and bang-flash grenades.



If there is even a HINT that his training and equipment were inappropriate and ineffective, he walks. No court will EVER punish a law enforcement officer for failing to endanger his own life.



The guy was no hero, and many if not most other officers would have done things differently. They also may well have been killed. A cop may be a coward, but that does not make him a criminal.
