On a non-meme basis, here's a true story.



In 1968 I was a college student working in a music store part time.  Back then, music stores in small towns were like gas stations...but instead of a bunch of gearheads hanging out drinking pop and smoking, it was musicians, both hobbyists and serious ones.  So I got a call at the store on a Friday afternoon, someone in a jam trying to book a band cause the one they had booked had just canceled the gig.  And there were about 8 or 10 kids hanging out, mostly college and high school students.  



We took a quick caucus, all the REAL bands we had friends in were already known to have gigs.  So we chose seven of us and I told the dude on the phone "no prob, I've got a pick-up band right here, but if you want 3 full sets it's gotta be folk-rock."  And he said, "what's the name of the band?"  And I said, I'll call ya back in five minutes."



The day before, the dad of one of the kids had been in the store....he was a geography prof at the Uni and a total curmudgeon, and he was livid because he heard a band on the radio called Pink Floyd and another one called Strawberry Alarm Clock."  He was beyond disgusted.  Anyway I called him at the geography department and I said, hey we just assembled a pickup band for a gig tonight and your son's in it, we'll play folk rock....WHAT'S OUR BAND NAME?"



And without even a deep breath he came back with SELF WINDING POTATO SALAD.



For years after that, whenever that store had to cough up a pickup band that was always the band name.  The store is long gone now, but that's still a recognizable band name around here because all seven of the original members have the rights to use it whenever.
